This is almost an encyclopedic discussion of canoe, structure, and style and use. Terms for boating and canoeing, are defined and discussed as the narrative goes along, and for the time aloud, I can’t think of a better introduction to canoeing and canoes. Very good job.
Here in 2020 I would think a canoe expert would have a shorter beard with some sort gel in it or something. Other than that I completely agree. This man screams canoe expert lol :)
I have a 1968 square stern canoe that my brother and I started restoring unfortunately he passed away before we could finish it. He worked for Chris Craft boat company and Wellcraft Boat Company. The canoe is fiberglass all the fiberglass work is done but it needs to be painted. Painting fiberglass is a bit tricky and beyond my knowledge.
Great! What a cool guy. Totally approachable and nice clear info. I would be so comftable to come to the shop and get into the conversation. This is how it’s done! Thanks.

Been thinking of getting a canoe since moving to a home along a lake, and I learned more in this video than a year of looking at canoes online trying to decide what I want. I greatly appreciate you putting this together.
Really great information covering everything I wanted to know, as I'm looking to get a canoe that would be 75% for soloing but leaving the option for tandem. I feel a lot more comfortable now, that I can make an informed choice. Great video, thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I got more information out of this than I've got out of countless canoe videos where they'll just casually mention "Tumblehome" without saying what it's for. I'm a wiser man than I was 9 minutes ago. If you weren't five and a half thousand miles away I'd buy you a beer.
I have a Wenonah Kevlar Rendezvous (solo) with a tractor seat. I’ve always paddled it kneeling, but my knees can’t take it for long any more. Though kneeling gives great back support, I got a canoe seat exactly like the one in this video for sitting with legs in front (tiring for my back), which is fine with a flat bench seat, but what is different about one for a curved tractor seat?
The seat portion matches the outline of the tractor seat, so the whole thing is shaped more like a clam than a book. They attach similarly, and there are both temporary seat back options and more permanent installations. For a more permanent seat back option, check out the CushGear Backsaver (bench or bucket), and for a more temporary option, check out Wenonah's Super Seat (bench or bucket). We are currently out of stock of bucket/tractor seat backs at the moment.
@@mr68camero1 not from Wenonah. Esquif makes a number of square-sterns, but they don't have distribution on the west coast and they don't do them in composite construction. Good boats if you can find them though!
This was a lovely overview. I think the canoe is potentially the ultimate watercraft of love and romance - also one hell of a freighter. You certainly have a lot of canoes from which to choose, and I love the easy-to-install bench seat and the knee savers.
Another thing that should be mentioned is that in some some places (I know Washington and BC are two examples) you actually don't need to register your boat even if it has a *motor as long as it's under 16 feet, and flat/square sterns tend to be more stable than symmetrical canoes although not quite as fast (especially when not going forward). Also it isn't really good for hunting or in tight waters but most canoes can be modified for rowing rather than paddling. *There's a limit of
Great little video Andrew, despite the noisy staff and vacuum cleaner in the background you did not miss a beat. Very informative. I would like to see the outtakes.
Great vid, clear concise, cool guy. Im watching this as I am considering building my own canoe from waste cardboard from my work. Mad I know, especially as I have little to no canoe knowledge. I imagine I might watch this several times over.
We've seen some pretty cool boats over the years! Some folks may elevate a 360* light on a post while others may install LED strips. As far as a radio, there are a lot of creative solutions if you like tunes on the water, but we haven't seen anyone install a full audio system... yet.
I really enjoyed the video. It was very interesting and appreciated the explanations for parts along the way. I’m definitely more knowledgeable. Thanks 😁👍👍
Unfortunately, no. It is exceptionally expensive, and there is a great risk of damaging/ruining the boat. It looks like your best bet may be these folks: Canoe and Kayak Store, Damery Works, Woodford, Berkeley, Gloucestershire, GL13 9JR. Cheers!
Had a 14 foot canoe from seats roebuck and had 9 adults in it a couple are freaky big dudes.... Abs wet still had plenty of board advice the water approx 6 inches.... So if it want to carry weight they are pretty awesome I have built my own canoe and it took only 5 hours from 2 piece of plywood 4x5 and 5 ply 9 foot 6 inch long and lil heavy but not bad and it was a tank as far as durability
Hi John. Good question. If anything, a pronounced keel "spine" may help the boat track, but is more about adding structure and rigidity to your hull, increasing its glide efficiency. Features that will increase maneuverability would be shorter waterline, increased rocker at bow/stern, and increased volume in the ends at the waterline. You can create this by heeling a boat over, changing the shape of the hull engaged in the water. Cheers!
This are great explanations, well done. The problem is, as an experienced paddler, I could imagine 5 different boats for different purposes. But the problem is I am allowed to only buy one.......
Nice Vid! Not thinking of buyin one, I made me a dugout or two, but I was just 'wasting' some time before school pick up and came across your video I enjoyed it! Very informative! Wish you all the best!
How about touring canoes suited for longer river and or lake trips. Possibly the ones that could handle a motor as will and be very stable. Perhaps 18 feet and up. Could you cover it in your future videos?
You sure can! Scotty has all the products you'll need: a set of gunwale clamps, oar lock posts, and oar locks! Of course you'll want some oars as well...

I’m interested in a solo boat but want to take my two Labrador’s out with me. I’m not sure if this is feasible. I’m more experienced with kayaks and have never owned a canoe.
It is certainly possible! Putting one pup in the bow and one in the stern would balance the boat out nicely, but it could be a little snug for all 3 of you. You might consider a tandem that you can paddle solo - this would allow more space for the dogs and additional gear (cooler, drybag, spare paddle, etc.). Something like Northstar Canoes' Northwind 16 or 17 with a kneeling thwart could be just right. You may also consider a Wenonah Aurora with hung web seats, sitting in the bow and facing the stern.
