  • Here is the full tour of my solar system setup for the 4Runner incluidng prices of every item and my opinion on what people should do if they were to start with nothing.
    Note: Any attempt to copy this solar set up is at your own risk. Please educate yourself as much as possible when attempting to deal with high powered batteries as they can be extremely dangerous. When dealing with battery connections I recommend using only one hand to avoid possibly closing the connection with both hands.

    This was a great video. I am constantly intrigued with everyone’s solar setups. I hope to do something with a van soon. Thanks.

      It's definitely unique to every individual's needs. It is fun though when you put it together yourself that you can choose the items for your needs.

    Excellent video! I have many solar panels renogy, goal zero, powerfilm, homemade and more. Youre right, batteries cost a lot. Im running with Lithium iron phosphate batteries. Ill be outfitting my 1999 crv later this year for this setup.

    I have a 2020 4runner. I want solar for a portable ac and refrigerator. Only concern is hiding wire so it dont get damaged. I know some person would cut it.
    I do want to put a dual battery under engine hood have those wires go into the trim.
    Only concern is hiding outside solar wires.
    I do want to put the inverter and things on back side window molle.

    Snap-on makes a really nice butane soldering iron

      I haven't had use for a soldering iron but I love always having one around in case I decide to make something that needs it. In fact I bought a 12v fan and some thermal switches for 30C and 35C so I'll be soldering again soon to make something that turns on automatically when the inside of the car gets too hot. Of course it'll have a 3rd option for just on.

    Jay Re the extra panels on the dash....aren't windshields treated to block UV rays? I'm have no clue if those are what carries a charge but for instance my self darkening eye glasses don't work looking through the windshield....might get better performance out a side window. Not sure...maybe someone can chime in. I also have some small rechargeable devices that could be charged while I drive if it works.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  2 роки тому

      True they block UV but panels still draw a good amount of power through the window, although not as well as outside.

    Just caught your note about the soldering iron - get a butane one. I actually use one for most projects because it heats up much faster than my electric one (though it's not precise enough for delicate electronics).

      Thanks for the heads up, Barbara. It seems the little 12V switch and the Alpicool refrigerator are out of stock. I have seen that happen with the refrigerator before. There does seem to be a brand called Geckoes that sells something that looks exactly the same inside and out but I never heard of them before. I would just check back later for the Alpicool one.

    Do you have any issues with battery acid fumes seeping out from beneath your wood panels?

    1200Wh / 272Wh = 4.4
    How do you get 4.4 "days" of usage? Could you explain please?
    If there's no sun at all, then all the battery power you have is 1200Wh, so you can only use your 272W fridge for 4.4 "hours"?

    The insulation on the battery wires are pretty robust, but having the positive wire right on top of the negative battery post is worrisome.

      Ha, yes, I thought so as well. So far almost no wear though at all so it passed the test. Since then I've replaced the batteries and no longer have a cable over a terminal.

    Thank you for your video. I have been searching for ever to find someone that will show me how to connect a solar panel to my crossbars. You did exactly what I want to do. Do you have any stability problems with the panel when you drive at freeway speeds? I always wonder if the panel might rip off the vehicle. Any other tips to get the panel on right? Thanks.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  3 роки тому +1

      No stability issues at all. The big things you need are those lock washers. It prevents vibration from allowing the bolts to shake loose. I used to check all the nuts visually every day or so but these days just every now and then. You should check very often at first to make sure they're still snug. They are just 100W Renogy hard panels.

      Jay Wanders Out Thank you so much. I was thinking of putting a 200W panel on my RAV4. It will physically fit but might look odd. I just want to make sure I generate enough power will the sun is not at the ideal angle or on less bright days. It probably sounds like overkill. Maybe I should size down to a 160 or something. I also like your idea about using a foldable panel. That might be my next step.

    Curious on your thoughts on using a Yeti Goal Zero lithium battery that was set up to charge to directly off of the alternator (while driving). If you were staying at a location for 2-3 days and driving to the next would this set up meet your needs and possibly eliminate the need to use solar at all?

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  4 роки тому +1

      I'll show you all the math for that. My refrigerator uses on average in average conditions 13 watts/hour. Over an entire day that comes to 312wh (13 watts * 24 hours = 312 watt hours) The Yeti 400 has 428wh of capacity so it could only power the refrigerator for about 1.4 days. It takes 5 hours to charge according to their web site so you would have to drive at minimum 5 hours to fully charge every day and a half which consumes quite a bit of electricity. The panel attached to the roof allows me to constantly charge but if that wasn't an option I would at least have some sort of folding panel to charge while stationary. It's possible depending on the time of year to get by with a 50W folding panel but that would require ideal weather every day and minium 8 hours of good sun (40 watt actual * 8 hours = 320wh) which isn't possible in the winter. A 100W folding panel could work well though. It's always a tough decision though. Of course without a refrigerator you can easily get by with a Yeti 400 or any comparable battery bank as long as you keep track of your consumption. Hope that helps!

      @@JayWandersOut Thanks for the detailed response! With battery tech improving I'm hoping to get power and not need to rely on the solar. Check out this 1260wh EF Delta review link below. This one would keep you going for 4 days! It also charges in 1.7 hours when plugging into shore power. I'm thinking stop into a Starbucks, enjoy a beverage, use the Wi-Fi, plug this in and 2 hours later you're good to go for another 4 days. Expensive @ $1,300 but that will come down in the coming years and it's only going to improve going forward. ua-cam.com/video/xjl3s1CdYII/v-deo.html

    Did you want to put two solar panels 100w by renology by putting them vertically?

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  3 роки тому

      Do you mean two of them side by side? The roof rack is much narrower than you would think and the factory rails are curved so the ends closest to the side rails is lower, too low to attach the panel. I have since moved to one smallet Thule cargo box and moved the solar panel over to the side all attached to Thule roof rails. I've found a single 100W panel is good enough for most of my needs and when I stop I just lay out the additional panels for added power which I really need when using my laptop. Still so far so good but the folding panel I have here is starting to die more and more.
