I heard a story a while ago on a podcast. I think it was a comedian, and when he was young he worked in an electronics store in California. A guy brought in a VCR or something to be repaired and and the clerk wrote it up. When they were done, the guy said "Do you know who this is for? The Skipper from Gilligan's Island". The clerk said "Alan Hale Jr.? I love him", then he listed a bunch of movies Hale had been in. Weeks later Alan Hale walks into the store and asked for that clerk. Hale shook the clerk's hand, said "I hear you're a fan and I wanted to say thank you", then Hale handed him an envelope full of signed pictures and some other memorabilia.
Wow that was nice to personally go to that store to pick his VCR up or whatever it was and personally hand that clerk some pictures and memorabilia.I like that story. He was in the Movie with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed called It's A Wonderful Life in the late 1930's or early 1940's towards the end of the money as a guy that pays back his loan to help George Bailey and the Bailey Savings and Loan. Look for him in that quick little scene close to the end of the movie.I always liked him as the Skipper on Gilligan's Island. He was awesome and his and Bob Denver's chemistry was incredible. I can't see anyone else ever playing those characters. RIP Skipper and Gilligan and the whole incredible cast of 7 castaways.
Alan Hale Jr had a restaurant in LA called "The Lobster Barrel" and he would come to your table and talk to you. He was exactly like the Skipper. He was truly that character.
Jon B I heard that David Carradine came in drunk and causing trouble. It’s said that Alan Hale chased him out with a baseball bat.
If I could go back in time, like a few trips, I would pick going to eat seafood and getting to meet Skipper!
We all need a Skipper in our life. Someone who can lead and who'll have our backs. He always had an immense amount of patience with Gilligan.
Alan Hale seemed like a genuine person! Wonderful story!
cathy s
Genuine person worthy term
That’s incredible. I always thought Alan Hale, Jr. had a big heart and this story shows he did. Thanks for sharing Rick.
Alan Hale was the PERFECT choice for the Skipper on Gilligan's Island, and he was just an all around good hearted person and a REALLY nice guy
Kevin Rose
I wonder if in Hollywood contracts if you’re playing a overweight character do you have to maintain their pre-trail and stay fat during your contract
yes, he was. I'm glad they didn't go with their original choice; Carrol O'Conner. (they didn't because they felt people would feel sorry for Gilligan whenever the Skipper yelled at him)
star trek The original choice for Gilligan was Jerry Van Dyke, but he turned down the role to star in another sitcom, the infamous “My Mother the Car”.
What a great story about our beloved Skipper. The power of love is magical and his presence with that little boy was probably remembered for many many years. Thanks Ric
What a great story! Alan Hale Jr. always struck me as being a really nice person in real life.
This story made me tear up a little bit I love The Skipper
I teared up too
I grew up watching Gilligan’s Island as a kid. There was something very magical about the show. When I watch the reruns it is like recapturing a small part of my childhood. The show meant a lot to me and I am great full for the hard work that the cast and crew put into the show, they touched a-lot hearts and made a real difference in peoples with this silly sitcom.
I loved your story. I am 55 and still watch Gilligan's Island on Metv. Out of all the cast, Alan, Dawn, and Bob were my favorites. I have also heard that even when Alan was sick himself, he still made appearances dressed in his Skipper attire. What a wpnderful and kind man he was. I still miss him.😟😪😭
Now you can see why The Skipper Alan Hale Jr. is and always and will be my favorite Cast Member on Gilligan's Island. Such a kind hearted soul. Amen and God Bless him always.
What a wonderful story about Alan Hale Jr.! It sounds like something he would do and we need more people like him today. It makes me smile. Thanks for sharing!
Just woke up didn't plan on crying but here I am I got mad love for Alan Hale jr. I love that man and God bless his soul
That is a great story. I have a cousin with down syndrome. She is in a home with others just like her. Each week I send her a homemade greeting card with a dollar bill and a sheet of stickers. The reason I bring this up is after I had been doing this a few years, I made a call to the home and ask a question I already knew the answer. There are residents there that never get mail. These people range in age from 20 to 50 plus but they all share the exact same joy we did as a child when we received mail. At that point I began sending 2 cards per month with the dollar and stickers for the staff to address to a resident most in need. Anyone can do these kind of things and it really feels great to put a smile on a person's face that needs so much, but hardly ever asks.
You are a very thoughtful person to think of others! Very sweet
You’re the best Cliff. We should all do something like that to brighten someone’s day.
@@stephen402007 Thank you. Nothing would make me happier to see people do little things for these beautiful people that life has thrown a curve to. It takes so little to make them happy. You can check with places like this and find out what types of treats make their day. God put them here, but it is up to us to welcome them to life and see to their needs and happiness. They are wonderful people!
Your a class act sir, hats off to you!
Cliff Roberson Awesome story. You’re such a sweet person!
His father was a great character actor back in the 30s and 40s.
Something that today’s movies lack.
Such a heart warming story! It's so refreshing to hear about someone that is truely a great human being, as Alan Hale was & as you are!! Thanks for your cheerful positive thoughts!!! Be Hopeful ✈
Im glad you shared this. I like when famous people do nice things like that. You hear so much negative about actors. Nice to hear positive. Thanks
For fans of Laurel and Hardy, the shenanigans of the Skipper and Gilligan look curiously and hilariously familiar! To portray these two L&H-like characters in the guise of modern day shipwrecked captain and passenger was part of the genius of the Sherwood Schwartz creation!
Don't overlook the Skipper's blue shirt, coupled with the red shirt that became Gilligan's opposite-side-of-the-color-wheel trademark, a marked contrast that couldn't have been an accident! Black skipper hat and white bucket hat, both, off to Mr. Schwartz!
Wonderful story Rick! Sweet, kindhearted man. I loved his father Alan Hale Sr. too! Great actor! Favorite role was in They a Drive By Night with George Raft and Humphrey Bogart. He played Ida Lupino’s husband. Awesome! A true classic movie! He and his wife obviously raised a wonderful son! Thanks for sharing this positivity!
I met Alan Hale Jr. at a celebrity golf tournament in Tulsa when I was 14. He was the nicest guy, not just signing autographs, but also talking with all of us. We visited about football and I walked away feeling like I really got to know him. When I heard that he died, I cried, feeling as if I lost a friend.
Alan Hale Jr. continued to visit sick children in the hospital long after Gilligan's Island went off the air, up until the 1980's if I remember correctly, and paid for the travel himself.
I think Allen Hale was a class act. That was a very heart warming story about him visiting that boy who had a kidney removed and he was there when that boy woke up. That was really nice of the way he cared about those children and went in character as the skipper of Gilligan's island. That was very nice of him. I also like the commitment to his craft by traveling from Utah to Las Angeles to Audition for Gilligan's Island. That's commitment for you.I have a lot of respect for him since learning all that I've learned about him. You're a class act Skipper.
I loved Gilligan's Island. Great cast. Great story about Alan just beautiful.
Rick, that was a great story to share. I recently saw him on an episode of “Batman” where he played a character named “Gilligan”. He seems like he was indeed a great man who had no hang ups about being identified with his tv character or the series.
I lived for this show! And "land of the lost" lol ty for telling everyone what a wonderful caring person he was. We dont hear good things nearly enough.
That’s exactly the kind of story you want to hear! Thank you Rick for sharing it.
Alan Hale Jr was the spitting image of his father. I remember seeing him in old movies and thinking"It's the Skipper" but it was his father.Didn't know about his philanthropy but his goodness shone through in his portrayal of the lovable curmudgeon who was the Skipper.
Skipper; didn't know anything about him. Thanks for sharing his kindness. It does fit his character.
Alan Hale jr. Appeared on an episode of The Andy Griffith Show and he called Barney little buddy you guys should check it out enjoy
As a child I identified will Gilligan ( kind of a screw-up) but I could feel the warmth of Alan Hale jr. coming through his character, always backing up his "Little Buddy". Its nice to know he backed up a lot of "little buddies" in real life. You can't fake greatness and kindness like his. I miss him like a relative, and am still a big fan.
Thanks for sharing this inspirational and heart warming story.
So uplifting! Alan Hale Jr was a star in the literal sense.
Amazing story! Thanks for sharing!
That’s how I volunteer as well.
I don’t do it for recognition, to get noticed or any gain. I usually don’t want people to know.
I volunteer because it’s the right thing to do at that time.
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for sharing that story ! ! Gave me goosebumps, God bless and love you! Thank you emensley ! !
Great info and story on Alan Hale Jr.
Thanks for the fine video tribute to Alan Hale, Jr. No doubt he was not only talented, but a big hearted person as well.
In addition to the comedy roles mentioned below in the "Andy Griffith Show" he was also in "The Lucy Show" in 1963 and "Here's Lucy" in 1970. and other comedy TV shows. Hale Jr. was in addition a talented dramatic actor. He appeared in numerous dramatic TV Shows, such as two "Perry Mason" shows in 1961 and 1963 and an "Ironside" in 1970.
As always, Stay Positive and Be Hopeful!
A very selfless man! Great story to highlight Rick!
Well that some good Goosebumps on a Friday morning!!! #behopeful
That's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard! 😭💝
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful story! I love hearing about people like him. He did seem like he would be like a big ole teddy bear.
I was friends with the Hales. I surfed with Alan Hale, Jr son in Carlsbad, California where they lived and they were just super sweet normal people. Alan always wore is signature hat everytime he was promoting the Skipper character, he was such a philanthropist even till his death he was so proud of the series~
That is such a blessing!
I can visualize this in my head. What a great and kind hearted man
i appreciate you!!!! you are uplifting and thats soooooo welcome!!!! Thank you!!!!!!
Hi Rick! Great story. Did you know Alan owned a restaurant decades ago on restaurant row on San Vicente Blvd in West Hollywood?
Alan Hale had a great smile,Saw him once play a boxer on gunsmoke
As always Rick, great video. This story was very touching and good to hear.
Hi Rick, the part of the Skipper was made for Mr. Hale and I was watching an episode of The Andy Griffith Show where he played mountain man Mr. Darling and he played another character on there that liked Aunt Bee and I also remember an episode of Growing Pains where he played a Cab driver which was his last appearance on tv before he died he was a very funny great and talented actor. I watch Gilligan's Island every Sunday on MEtv for 3 hours with 6 episodes, thank you Rick for the mini tribute to Mr. Hale.
I watch Svengoolie on MEtv!!!
Adrianne Sadler Thomas, ..... Denver Pyle played Mr. Darling on the Andy Griffth Show. Denver Pyle is better known as Uncle Jesse on Dukes of Hazzards...... Yes Alan Hale JR played a mountain man who came to town looking or a bride and fell in love with Barney's girl Thelma Lou. but he played a different character called Big' Jeff Pruitt.
Even Bob Denver Gilligan himself appeared on the Andy Griffith show......... he played Charlene Darling's Husband Dud Wash.
I thought Flip Wilson played Mr.
Darling on Andy Griffith show
@@20alphabet LOL
I really enjoyed Alan Hale jr. as Biff Baker, he had such a wonderful on screen presents.
"I was sick, and ye visited me."
"But when you give to someone in need, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you." Matthew 6:3 and 6:4 New Living Translation Bible
My dad was a golfing buddy of Alan Hale. Yes, Alan was a wonderful man, a big lovable teddy bear!
This surprises me not one bit. As a kid in the 70s, as now, I loved Gilligan's Island.
Wonderful story.
Thanks Rick👍
🌺🌹🌹🌺
Wonderful to see he was such a sweet man.
That is so cool to hear.
Alan Hale Jr looked so much like his dad it was incredible. I watched Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn and Alan Hale Sr as Little John. The credits said Alan Hale and I had to look it up to clear up my confusion. He was also in It Happened One Night with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. I loved Gilligan's Island and the old movies with Alan Sr.
Very heartwarming!
What a sweet man! God bless him and rest in peace ❤
I loved Alan in Gilligan's Island and Casey Jones as a kid.⭐🌟
Beautiful story. What an encouragement.
Met him once when we went to
his restaurant. He liked people.
The place had great soup.
Who the hell would give this a thumbs down?
Great video!
Great it was the funniest show when I was a youngster. Gilligan’s Island came on right after The Jackie Gleason Show CBS ch2 here in Chicago .
According to the other comments, I wish I could have met Alan Hale Jr... but you I guess I already did... 😊
You could just look at Alan's face, or his father's (who looked exactly like him, and was an actor too, btw) and tell that the man had great compassion and empathy for others.
That's awesome, thanks for sharing.
Had a bittersweet encounter with Alan Hale Jr years ago at the famous "Pantry's Restaurant" in downtown Los Angeles. My wife was a huge fan of Gilligan's Island while growing up. We saw Alan, by himself, finishing his meal at another table. We waited until he rose to pay his bill. Together we walked over to greet him and my wife really wanted his autograph. At the time all we had was a napkin for him to sign. He acted like a grump and complained how he hated to sign napkins and scraps of paper. I impolitely told him what he could do with his autograph and said that the only reason for asking was because my wife was a huge fan of his. He scowled, paid the cashier, and went out the door. A few minutes later, he came back in and gave my wife an autographed thank you note. He said, "I guess I should be grateful that someone would want my autograph after so many years." So... maybe a bad day or he wasn't feeling well, but in the end...the Skipper came through with a winning performance.
I am glad you presented this story in its entirety. I do agree that we all have bad days
Maybe He Was In Serious-Pain. He Had Cancer Of The Thymus. Thats' The Neck Area I Believe. RIP Alan.
Skipper......nice story !
To Kevin Rose-I totally agree with you on that fact. In fact Gilligan's Island would not h ave been the same had Jerr y Van Dyke been given the r ole of Gilligan over Bob Den- ver. If I were a child waking up from surgery, I don't kno w what I'd think if I saw The Skipper smiling @ me; my m ind'd still be in a fog.
How awesome
Wow..😭 thanks, that is so sweet. Skipper powers😀🍀
What a nice thing to do
Alan Hale jr was also on an episode of _Wild Wild West_
Roy Rodgers Jr. Had a great childhood his parents were real behind the cameras just as in front of them.
RIP Skipper. We miss you!
This video was a great way to start the day!
This comment was a great read at the start of the day! Thank you!
Heartwarming and at least the kid was smarter than all those who called the Coast Guard!😮🤓😎✌🏻😂
He was one of those actors where the real person always comes through the performance. The Skipper was probably him just being himself and coming off natural.
I used to work at a children's hospital, and when celebrities came to visit, we were not allowed to approach them for autographs or especially pictures.
I worked at a large city hospital and we had the same policy. I worked there for 20 years and met many celebrities. The only time I asked for an autograph was when the bass player from The Small Faces and Rod Stewart and The Faces was a patient. He handler brought him to a treatment room in a wheelchair and I said to his handler, "That's Ronnie Lane the bass player." His handler said, "You know who he is? He thinks no one knows him here in Texas. Please, would you say something to him and perhaps ask him for an autograph?" I told Mr. Lane he wrote one of my favorite songs, "Itchycoo Park" and would he please sign an autograph for me. His face lit up, he smiled and signed a piece of blank paper for me.
Great song Michael Shrimp!
@@SaintShemp Are you familiar as to what "Itchycoo Park" refers to? It was a small grassy area on Sunset Blvd just west of Crescent Heights on the south side. Unfortunately, no longer there.
@@seanneowen Hi, Seanne. I just replied to Michael Shimp, asking if he knew what "Itchycoo Park" referred to. As far as I recall from my youth, it was a small grassy area on Sunset Blvd in now West Hollywood, just west of Crescent Heights on the south side. It's no longer there. Behind it was the location of the infamous "Garden Of Allah" hotel, which was torn down in 1959.
@@seanneowen Thanks for your reply. There is some debate over where "Itchycoo Park" is exactly. Some of us, in our "wayward youth," would hang out there back in 1967 and smoke pot. I was told by someone who worked at a nearby recording studio that that little grassy area was what the song referred to. That was the story from people who knew the music group that recorded the song. Are you from, or do you live in Los Angeles?
Alan Hale, jr. doesn’t strike me as a publicity hound. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least that he would do such a great service for sick kids in the hospital and keep it private.
He was a very versatile actor.
Such a dear, sweet man
Alan Junior is a Geat Man!
You wanted to know who else... Ernest Borgnine put everyone else first. Both Hale and Borgnine were part of Our Greatest Generation serving in WWII Hale in the Coastguard and Borgnine over 10 years in the Navy.
Thanks for this wonderful story. We certainly need to hear about people performing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Too much publicity about scandals.
I first saw him on The Andy Griffith show and he was pretty much a huge guy with a kind heart i then seen Gilligans island and it was like watching the Griffith show in color only not in a town but a island so im thinking Alan Hale Jr was not much different in real life
Wow amazing 😍👏 but I'm still surprised Gillian was never murder by the other castaways 🤔
Hahaha
I remember an episode of 'That 70's Show' , where the kids are watching G I and Red walks by, pauses for a moment looking at the TV, and says ; "Why don't they just kill Gilligan ?" LMAO
Skipper is one awesome person
Doing God's work. I'm sure the Almighty has a great place in Heaven for Mr. Hale.
I heard that Frank Sutton (Sgt. Carter on Gomer Pyle) was also really nice.
Something of interest for y'all who are interested in Hollywood families.
Alan Hale Jr. is almost a complete duplicate of his father. Of course, one could say he got his "temperament" from his father!
The "Skipper" was also on an episode of The WILD Wild West. Anyone remember that?
I had major operation this age. Skipper !!!
One of my favorite people also
Way to go Skipper!
very good :) .......
Hey Nick, love your vids. Have you done any on Gomer Pyle USMC?
The Skipper rules!
That's good
God Bless Alan Hale!
