Why did Qui Gon NEVER teach Obi Wan Lightsaber Forms? 🤨

- Did you know that Qui Gon Jinn NEVER taught Obi Wan any lightsaber forms?
And this annoyed the young Kenobi to the point where he absolutely hated training with his Master!
But Qui Gon did have a very good reason as to why he didn’t expose his Apprentice to the more advanced practices earlier with the other Padawans!
One day, Obi Wan reached the end of his patience and angrily asked why he wasn’t being taught any lightsaber forms.
But Qui Gon calmly answered him explaining that he wanted to make sure Obi Wan had the basic stances and techniques drilled into his head and mastered.
Cuz he believed that the ground basics were going to be Obi Wan’s greatest ally in battle and serve as a base foundation for future training.
And this is very similar to the situation with Daniel and Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid as Daniel gets frustrated that he isn’t being taught Karate the way he wanted to while Mr. Miyagi was intentionally grounding him in the basics even if he couldn’t see it!
So in hindsight, it was all from a certain point of view of how the apprentice saw their progress! - Розваги
Qui Gon taught Obi Wan the basics of high ground.

Mine too, probably because he was the only "true" Jedi of his time (at least according to Legends).
And he become the greatest master of Soresu. One of the most basic yet effective lightsaber forms.
But only, because Qui Gon died.
Obi used, like his master, Ataru.
Until his master died and Obi Wan thinked, that he needed more defense and focused on that.
Yeah I noticed that too. After fighting Darth Maul, Obi wan was much more controlled.@@hasseo195

Kenobi managed to beat the High Ground against both Maul and Grievous.
Kenobi mastered the technique, but he is one of the very few who can counter it.
Agreed 😊

Out of movie characters certainly. I think Revan, Malgus, or Exar Kun would be a fair matchup (not them definitely winning, even odds either way)
He is the GOAT. Screw Anakin being the chosen one, Obi Wan could have ended his life twice now, thanks to the show. Chosen one, pft.

This all comes back around where stances were how obi wan defeated darth maul
He pretended to switch to ataru not even just the stance the first few swings were an exact 1 to 1 of what happened between qui-gon and maul at the end of their fight except obi-wan was purposely drawing out maul's chin check with the lightsaber hilt.
Liam Neeson is a legend. This guy can play anyone and play the role perfectly.
Up until like 2010. Then he just became corny.
Let’s be honest, there really wasn’t much to the “Qui-Gon Jin” character. . .
@@bashbish4564To be fair to him, his wife died. He doesn’t take on any serious roles now as he doesn’t want to tap into the emotions roles like that bring.
He’s got a great resume from before taken onwards. I think he gets a pass here
Obi-Wan: But I'm not doing those amazing Ataru acrobatics yet, like all the other padawans in my class can do! This is outrageous! It's unfair!
Take a seat.
"A certain point of view"? Guys! He said it!
I read this in the book "Master and Apprentice" its a good read and gives more details about not only Obi wan's and his master's relationship but Dooku and Qui gon's as well.
I just read the book like a month ago. Pretty good read.
Obi's thoughts: "I HATECHOO!!!! 🔥😠🔥"
Can't have a high ground without a firm foundation
Both of them were my favourite Jedi. And still are. ❤
I would have love to see Liam Neeson reprise that role in some form. It's too late now, of course 😅
“A certain point of view?”
This conversation between Obi Wan and Qui Gon comes from the novel Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray.

So Star Wars had some inspirations from The Karate Kid? I dig it
He was also teaching Obi-wan patience. Which he needed at that age.
Anakin would've thrown like 20 tantrums by the time he realized Qui-Gon's reasoning
Straight up Mister Miyagied Obi-wan
Don’t think we didn’t catch that reference….it’ll take more than that to sneak a quote past me!
You'd have to get up PRETTY LATE in the afternoon to pull as fast one on me!
I wish they would make a Qui Gon series like they did with Obi Wan
Qui Gon believes in Obi Wan that Obi Wan can taught himself and Qui Gon want to see their natural basic fighting. 👍👍
I viewed it as: "If you don't use standard forms, no one can easily counter you"
The same frustration as Anakin had.
He saw Obi-Wan studying the forbidden fruit ninja techniques and worried about Obi-Wans desire for severing limbs.
In the phantom menace I missed this aspect of qui gon gin. It never felt like he was teaching obi wan Kenobi anything in that movie.
These old movies are so good. It's just perfect. 👍
Qui gong is a legend because if you have the high ground you are safe
This method of teaching is exactly what my violin teacher did when I was a little kid.
I ended up hating all my lessons, losing interest in the violin, and quitting.
yeh realistically its the most efficient teaching way, but it fails in that its unfun and you dont get to do any cool stuff to keep you motivated to continue. people are not movie characters that a plot demands they push through a few montage scenes. in reality ur doing 100's of lessons and drills grinding out 1000's of hrs of work, not a 2hr movie run time worth of training.
HE TAUGHT THE HIGH GROUND
Yes, and actually I remember there being something about how Mace took to young Kenobi, but Qui-Gon forbade Mace and the other lightsaber instructors from sharing form seven techniques in part or in whole. I can't remember what part of expanded universe it was, though.
And while it was grudgingly, Mace Windu respected Qui-Gon and Dooku enough to cooperate with that.
Or maybe it was wookieepedia speculation. But I can definitely see why Mace Windu's judgment of Kenobi's character would see him as exceptional--if that's true.
You ended with, “from a certain point of view.” I see what you did there lol.
Obi’s defense is masterclass. In the clone wars when he fights maul and oppress he was an absolute rock and even broke oppresses leg in the process
This mentality is honestly what ended up becoming obi-wan’s fighting style in the end. He doesn’t do anything bombastic but he has all the basics and foundations practiced and mastered to such a clinical degree of precision that he’s almost impossible to defeat. His guard is basically impenetrable and he doesn’t panic or make mistakes, he just waits until you make one.
Master...would you teach me the ways of the force?
Quai-Gon: Ok, go wax those droids.
NICE comparison!
I've been trying to explain this to my daughter for years.
She's currently an advanced green belt in Taekwondo, but finally understands thanks to this short.👍👍👍👍👍

Obi-Wan Kenobi, master of Soresu, is officially the Jedi Kid.
"A certain point of view?" 😂

Show me, drive the ball.
Show me, chop the wood.

Qui-Gon was so fucking bad ass in the comics and books
That's how you should be taught, without a solid foundation to build on it takes longer to master something
Qui-gon: you must perfect the stance of the High ground.
Episode 3 later on
Did anyone else instantly think of the High Ground, because that is a basic advantage in any fight
Qui Gon was truly a great Jedi
It makes sense. It’s always good to master the fundamentals of a skill so that you can fully master said skill when you learn it
That is the reason Obi Wan became a Beskar wall with form 3
It’s always the ones with the fundamentals and the basics sharpened that turn out to be the greats
Qui-Gon just wanted to teach Obi-Wan about the high ground
Nice tie in with the Danial son reference 👌
And last, Qui-Gon teach Obi-wan the secret 8th form, the High ground
recently read master & apprentice and this scene really stuck with me! so good!
Obi wan and Anakin were both hot heads …i love them so much

"Show me 'Paint Fence'."
Everything in the realm of Star Wars is "from a certain point of view". lol
“WHAT I SAY IS TRUE. From a certain point of view.”
This is how he was able to switch from form 4 to 3.
Qui Gon helped Obi Wan build a solid foundation so that he could one day stand on higher ground
Young people want the flash, teachers want the basics.
Band camp in a nutshell
Quigon taught obiwan the most important lesson, always get the high ground
This is why as a Padawan he was able to best Maul. He was above average with actual training and hard work
“Basics, Zuko. Break his root!”

If the Jedi had dooku And qui gons mindset they would’ve never lost
Obi-Wan's ability to change up his stance is how he would later defeat Darth Maul with ease.
He never taught him to fight, just defend what your opponent throws at you, which is why Kenobi almost never lost a duel…until Dooku whooped his ass twice 👀
Same thing happened when Master Roshi was teaching Kirilin and Goku they didn't think the basic things they were doing was effective 😂
So that's where Obi-wan learned meaning of certain point of view. 😅
Qui-Gon had Obi-wan master the basics first because he knew that no building can stand very long without a firm foundation. That’s the mark of an experienced warrior and good teacher.
In the novelizations Mace credits Obi Wan with being The master of the basic defensive stance Soresu, form III. He also points out that Grievous was most likely defeated by most masters on the council but his worst odds were against Obi Wan since he had totally and utterly mastered a basic form.
To be real here, this is so true in Martial Arts. Foot form is so much more important than a bunch of fancy moves, and much more practical when fighting. You can make up your own form as you go along.
All great masters their students not only the foundations, But why those foundations are important.
He taught One of the greatest Jedi Masters of all time using this technique. That should be respected.
And he ended up being the second best Jedi duelist
From that encounter with the Maul, they had an excellent team zigzag thing going until they got separated. It would seem that he had every confidence in his apprentice in that life and death fight or else he would have had him stand down. Turns out to be the fight and kill that made him a Knight
So basically, he taught him, 'a particular set of skills '..... 🤔🤔🤔
Karate Kid and SW existing in same universe: Confirmed
This is basically what sports is like. Even professional athletes sometimes have to have their entire throwing/hitting/running mechanics completely reworked from the ground up. They’ve always gotten by on sheer ability, but then they get in with the big boys and all the things they’re used to getting away with simply don’t work anymore against better, more fundamentally sound players. So they have to relearn how to do everything the correct way.

A great master would teach his students patience first
Patience and knowing to straight wins the battle
He needed to learn the high ground basics
The "CERTAIN POINT OF VIEW"
Nice certain point of view reference and great video. 🎉
I saw a video that says qui gon taught obi wan ataru when he was younger because he was quite hot headed much like anakin and form 4 fit his personality (which is why his kyber crystal is blue not green because he wasnt the humble jedi he was in the films until he was older). However obi wan decided to switch up and study the defensive form 3 after qui gon died because he saw the lack of the defence to the front of the body and it humbled him
Obi Wan is a master of the basics. Imagine beating out Annakin in his physical peak with just good fundamentals.
Qui-Gon was not willing to risk making another Xanatos who also would know his moves.
