The scariest part that the show abandoned was that the infection was started by spores in flour. That was really scary, you can kill a zombie but an invisible menace like a airborn virus or tainted food is way scarier
It was spread by tainted flour in the show. The neighbor offered some baked goods to Joel/Sarah in episode one, which they declined and it was the catalyst to the old lady being turned into a zombie.
Idk how you can say this was abandoned by the show when the two main characters literally have an entire conversation about it

They had the budget. HBO spent more on TLoU per episode than Game of Thrones. Which is why it's so perplexing. They clearly had the funds for highly detailed infected and elaborate costumes, but then only gave them limited screen time. Even hired the same actors who played clickers in the game.

I've always told my family "If there's ever an apocalypse I'm stealing a big ass vehicle and trailer from one of the lots by our house and filling it with food, water, toilet paper, and tampons." I'm not gonna deal with this menstrual sh!t the old fashioned way and I'd go as long as I could without wiping my ass with leaves. It's a whole Zombie Land vibe I've got in my head really.

Episode 3 is the San Junipero of The Last of Us. It doesn't really have a lot to do with the main subject matter, but it does pander to a certain group of people and so is the greatest science fiction story ever written by a human.

Yes. It's bubblegum and saccharine for the sake of doing a cute episode. When the theme of a series is based upon the concept of exploring the dark side of progress decides to have a consequence free episode carries the same off putting feeling as most "very special episodes" felt on cable television, in that it feels the same as if it exists to please a committee somewhere. @@tigadirt

Never bothered with the show haha. Game was great, but looking back, it still had that walking dead were the monster thing thats annoying.
Aye i like your edit/revamp of the series. That works for the two characters too that they are still in mourning over their daughter/friend. Suffering from flashbacks throughout the episodes.

I enjoyed your rewrite ideas very much. I think having some of the original writing staff and wanting to keep the game lovers happy they tried to adhere to the game plot and when they deviated, according to their pod cast episodes, they had very thoughtful reasons for doing what they do. But when one zooms out and looks at the potential quality of this as a movie instead of a series, I think I would prefer your rewrite, as a lover of the game and as someone who likes to spend time in the world they make, I too felt like something was off or missing a lot of the time. Nice work
I only hope there is no bodybuilder female antagonist in season 2.

amen brother! its because of the subpar storytelling from hollywood that other mediums are rising up like anime and manga. we are starved for a fulfilling story that satisfies our need to be entertained at a deeper level. that goes for all genres, writers really need to step up their game or else the AI will rise up and take over🙃

Henry and Sam are integral to the story cause it allows Ellie and Sam to be Kids for once which shows the viewer that not only are they still children but that they may not have the luxury of being able to express it. It also puts everyone's guard down only to later be reminded after the death of Henry and Sam that they too are vulnerable and can die in a moments notice. This would have been more powerful had the show actually succeeded in making the world around them seem perilous.

I think it's safe to say we stand as the unpopular opinion. This show was a quarter of what the game was but yet critics raved about how it was so beautifully done, haha. That show is one and done for me, also, I most likely wouldn't watch the second season unless someone asked me to watch it with them.

After having had completed the game several times, and after having seen several video games remade into films and television series, the thought of watching this this series honestly brings me dread. A better version of "The Last Of Us" TV series is the underated horror movie "The Girl With All The Gifts" (2016). It has basically the same plot where plants turn people into zombies, but involves children called 'Hungries'.
I just kept pressing the skip button while watching it until something happened. I think I skipped more than 50%.
That sounds more logical than actually watching it. I thought about putting it on mute and making up my own dialogue like when I was a kid, but the show is just so boring to look at. I had to smoke a ton of herb to get through it. The first 20 minutes set up the cringefest, and I just fastened my seat belt like a crash test dummy. 🤪

You nailed it regarding episode 3. It felt like the showrunner really just wanted to make an episode about a gay couple living a normal life, just to make a point. It didn't feel like it fit in the series, it felt like an entirely separate story. Or, sometimes when shows series spinoffs have a crossover episode with the main show that spawned it. There is also a lot of box checking in this series. But it's hard to find any new shows that don't have box checking.

i love your observations and suggestions here, especially the re-ordering. but i think some of the filler you propose is important for most audiences to develop feelings for the characters. sounds like you played the games so maybe you had more identification with them going in? also i think the decision to feature less 'zombie' action was intentional to distinguish the show from TWD. i took it as the zombies were large enough in numbers to collapse civilization but that they are not enough of a problem at this point to prevent small communities from forming, etc. FEDRA would have kept walls and barbed wire up out of default and to justify their control over people. in fact i found the zombie volcano to be the biggest abnormality in the show. i will say that if the writers' intention WAS what i took from it, it should have been explicitly stated at some point. great job as always brother.

Ok…now I need a video (series) about how LOTR is the best video game to movie adaptation that was never a game…
Fellowship forms…then plays out a video game…travels from location to location hiding from or avoiding danger, making decisions, etc…then fighting a different “boss” of increasing difficulty along the way. Aragorn fights off black riders and Frodo gets stabbed…Fellowship fights hydra/kraken outside Moria…cave troll…escape to the bridge…Gandalf fights the balrog…etc.
All new and more difficult levels of a video game…🤷♂️
Been doing exactly that - watching a playthrough. Not feeling the horror quite as much as playing myself, but 10 times better than this poor TV adaptation.
Didn't ruffle my feathers. I don't like the games and I thought the show would be good but I was wrong. Now, because of the show, I hate it even more. Just garbage people put on a pedestal, and I have no idea why. Boggles my mind it does.
Hey Mortal Kombat (1995) movie is the best man for just dumb action fun and banger music to boot.
Because this came out after Abbey Pump from the 2nd game and the forced ending in the first game. I just don't care about the drek, but your edit is way better obviously and thankfully no forced gay relationship in your edit. The biggest flaw in the first game was Joel killing the fireflies at the end of the first game which didn't make a lot of sense and was a complete 180.

How are we as viewers determining what's filler based on our preconceived one-to-one expectations of a story we're not creating but consuming? A gamer can immerse themselves in the lore, read notes, explore, collect etc. A show's world building can be subtle or blunt, either way it's spoon fed to viewers in doses the show runners control.

1:35 Hideo Kojima had the reverse issue. He made good games back n the day but bogged down with cutscenes . As many ppl say: he should make a movie not a game. He also has an unhealthy obsession with Norman Reedus exactly like Tim Burton and Jonny Depp(maybe not the: “putting into a role he shouldn’t be in” . IE: Jonny Depp in the Lone Ranger ).

EP 3 was one of the beste EP on the whole tv sky...
I didn't think it was a bad stand alone story. It should have been released separately as a movie, but it didn't fit in with the tone or plot of the show and was completely out of place and unnecessary.
@@whatisantilogic138 They want to show us not only the journey with elle and joel, they want show us something unique. The life they both live is very different to the other people. The contrast ist very important and the fact that there is no danger is because there are years after the infection... The most infected people aren't able to walk. They grow with time together! That's why they aren't soo much infected people around.

I felt this same way about the show. So much filler. Also that whole episode 3 was just so misplaced. I felt like we were just starting to get to know the main characters and it was a total detour that shouldn’t have been that early in the show. Maybe if it was a mid-season episode it would’ve worked better.

Cutting down ep 3 to after Bill and Frank had died would have been the absolute worst decision. Fans of Bill, Nick Otterman, and gay representation in media would have been pissed. And so would I.
I can see why fans of the show/game can only cut out parts to improve the pacing, but in a perfect world we would have just gotten more episodes.

Amen. It's just The Road by Cormac McCarthy but nowhere near as good. I feel like when it came out people praised it but acknowledged how it was an old cliche, nowadays people treat it like it changed gaming and storytelling forever somehow despite not really doing anything different.
Your the only person ive ever heard that acknowledged episode 3 was pointless and just takes away from the show. It feels like alot of people were afriad to be critical of it cuz these days you get called homophobic for anything. Its a good story in a vaccuum but it totally detours from the story.

I stopped watching after episode 3. Saw that as useless filler. Not needed for the story. But how you presented this, would have made me want to watch the whole series. However, it was not made that way and The Last of Us was like Walking Dead for me. Reached a point and said, "Nope, not for me, you lost me." And I moved on.
