- CHRISTOPHER GUEST ON THE FOLKSMEN: "We've opened for Spinal Tap. We've opened for ourselves on occasion. We actually once got booed off. So that people could actually see us in different outfits. Which was a very surreal moment." [Christopher Guest]
Christopher Guest is a national treasure.
--national--
American or british? Or both?
"If you punched a hole in 'em, you'd have a good time." Brilliant.
"teeter crazily" is one of my favorite little phrases. And, of course the next line "If you punched a hole it in, then you'd have a good time."
Christopher Guest is freakishly multitalented and incredibly gorgeous!
I love this guy. Top notch among other masters of wit like Robert Smigel, Rowan Atkinson and Phil Hartman...why did they delete the song "The Mighty River" (long ten minute oddysey of the river flooding the town)...it's touching, and hilarious! Check that out in the DVD deleted scenes..
He said something that sums up his style. "Reacting. Not acting".
Spot on Christopher! That's why he (and his steady cast of characters) are so unbelievably talented and witty thus, funny.
He is not in the mood for this interview...but he is trying hard
I thought the interview was great. The concept of the actors in his movies functioning as jazz musicians improvising is brilliant. It's exactly what I was feeling about these semi-improvised movie projects. Great stuff. I hope Chris is working on another... He's an incredible talent.
"we actually got booed off so the audience could see us in different costumes, which was interesting."
Awesome....
"Do you still play folk music?"
"Apparently"
Hahaha! Brilliant.
He might be arrogant or he might be shy or he might be bored or he might be a bit "aspergery" -- but he makes wickedly funny movies. And that's enough for me.
I knew Christopher Guest was great and then he said he liked/played bluegrass and that just completely confirmed it.
He's a challenging interview it seems. The more you make it a genuine conversation the better.
The only challenge was Rose trying to form a sentence.
"Hello! Tonight Guest is my guest. Now Mr. Guest, you make absurd, funny movies and yet you yourelf are not absurd. How exactly is that possible, Mr. Guest? For it seems to contradict many of the strange assumptions I have about human nature?"
I'd like to see them do a movie like this about Model Railroading
And slot cars, but the two don’t get along… it writes itself…
If you see "For Your Consideration" there is an obvious bit sticking it to Charlie Rose. The joke is that the Charlie Rose character won't shut up and let the interviewee talk. I think guest really hated this interview.
That was brutal!
teeter crazily
The spangled dwarf in his bowtie
The infantry that don't ask why...
meaning of "shmooze"
verb: talk with someone in a lively and friendly way, typically in order to impress or manipulate them.
"it's a good time to put yourself forward, to network and to schmooze"
Do you think that Charlie is boring Christopher Guest? God bless Chris for being a good sport and making sure that this interview had a pulse.
Christopher, 5th Baron Haden-Guest
Here's something a lot coincidental and a little weird, depending on how you view the stuff that goes on in the world. A few hours ago I was listening to English comedian Adam Buxton's Christmas 2017 podcast. Adam's guest was his sometime comedy partner, film director and friend Joe Cornish. The podcast featured an exchange of gifts, one of which, from Adam to Joe, was an old BBC pronunciation style guide. One of the pronunciation rules was for words like deity and spontaneity, the e sound should be "ee" as opposed to "ay". Personally, I say "deeity" but like most everyone I've ever heard, pronounce spontaneity with an "ay" sound. In fact, I thought at the time listening, I don't know of anyone who says "spontaneeity". Until Christopher, 5th Baron Haden-Guest.
It is an underappreciated type comedy......like Monty Python
I don’t think Christopher Guest is capable of shmoozing
Total genius
@Jitpring I think he comes off as a very nice person.
It's always torture listening to actors speak about ANYTHING, let alone their own work and life, but this is especially insipid. Charlie Rose? How much time did he spend on his knees to get this gig?
Half agree with you. Charlie Rose is trying too hard, but Christopher Guest is a class act
did guest get the idea for scene in "For your consideration" from this journalist? remember the scene when writters are invited in a talk show and than they're continualy interrupted by journalist?
Maybe Charlie was searching for the word “endearing” to describe the passionate people in the films. At least that’s the thought that’s always come to my mind when I watch them. I feel like most of the characters have always come across with a certain endearing quality where you’re still rooting for them..but I don’t think Guest can get away with smoothing over that they are poking fun even if it’s good spirited. That’s what most of comedy is. Laughing at ourselves and reflections of ourselves.
my aunt collected thimbles.
Christopher Guest has created a different kind of comedy....just like Monty Python did...different ....please....
His age went to 11!
Eugene Levy is the brains behind these films
Not true. It's a partnership. Eugene Levy has said that Christopher Guest usually comes up with the basic concept of his films first and then together they write the backstory of each character. Then they map out the complete story. They allow the actors to improvise their own dialog after they explain what they want in each scene.
Well now, that’s aggressive
Hmm, conflation between mock, meaning fake and mock, meaning to look down on.
It’s a fake documentary, not a documentary of people mocking.
Seriously though, listen to question Rose starts off with. It's so absurd and impossible to answer and possibly a little bit insulting that Guest doesn't know what to say for a second. The obvious answer would be "what the fuck are you talking about that doesn't make sense" but Guest handles it and sort of has to talk down to answer the questions reasonably.
and Otto`s,Dr. Hiberth`s,Mr. Burns`,Smithers`,and a lot more,plus he is Spinal Tap`s bassist
He and henry winkler need to have a debate
No, I understand your usage, or shall I say un-understand you.
Since early October 2017, I'd guess that about 20%-25% of content I watch on UA-cam features someone who has been 'exposed' as part of the series of 'sexual misconduct' scandals referred to recently as "Pervgate".
what Rose doesn't get is that there are people who are comedic actors and those who are comedians. Not every funny person is Robin Williams or Jim Carrey who are "on" all the time.
Poor Christopher Guest!!! You can see how uncomfortable he is talking to this arse.
I wish Charlie would get out of the way of this interview. It's as if he's trying to audition for/impress Christopher Guest... bah
@jimfliptx Ya and although he did not direct spinal tap, he did help improvise a lot of it and wrote the music with Micheal and Harry. I suppose that isn't a parody either? By the way are you Gay for Guest?
He isn't "crazy on film"
@zackhanscom Ya I agree. He's not fessin' up the the intent that everyone else obviously picks up on. If it wasn't parody? Then who the fuck would watch it? For what reason? Its "another way of looking at it..." value? Bullshit. He's being deliberately evasive on the intent. Of course he's poking fun. and not just at the music aspects either. He is parodying the "person types" and their respective mindsets.
I had the same thoughts 👏👏👏 And I absolutely love the movies.
Charlie Rose occasionally does good interviews, but he's annoying in this one. He didn't give Guest the time to be thoughtful in his answers. You could tell Guest was thinking a lot about the questions. Whenever he paused, Rose would interrupt and try and guide the answer. It thus shortened what Guest was going to say and too often took him in a different direction.
Charlie Rose is incompetent
WTF, they're not even close to being the same level of 'underappreciated type comedy', please...
Well, if there was something to laugh about here......
Charlie Rose is one of the worst interviewers ever...talks too much. Makes it too much about him, and he's not interesting enough for that.
:o he doesnt sound like nigel at all :O+
@MyQuesnel sorry....unappreciated*
Just think - Christopher Guest gets to schtoop Jamie Lee Curtis
@EddieGoregor Me am wood licke dat:) lol
Thank you for everything Chris! Here’s something for you: ua-cam.com/video/Epm1AKFshWw/v-deo.html
Guest is a comedic writer and actor - he's not a comedian akin to Robin Williams or Will Smith
this was uncomfortable to watch!
Charlie is not dong a good job as the straight man and damn he is a stiff. Leave the funny to the pros, Chuck. Guest wants to flee.
man this interview is TERRIBLE.
I'm sorry Guest is FOS on the "mockumentary" point. Its parody plain and simple. You can't paint people like he does, then detach yourself from all judgments. Shame on you Guest. Be honest about your pokes. You can't be this serious? If you are? I am destroyed. Like the Beatles, Lucy in the Sky explanation from John (After the Jesus incident) I think you are just skiing down the same old media slope. It don't add up. Especially considering the cast you choose. Wink wink. So ok? you are sincere!
