Desert Seas

- Along the east and west coasts of Saudi Arabia are two seas that contain a treasure of marine life that few knew existed -- and even fewer had ever seen. The Arabian Gulf was formed at the end of the last Ice Age, some 10,000 years ago, and the Red Sea's history goes back even further. And now, thanks to Saudi Aramco, for the first time millions of viewers across the globe are able to marvel and see up close the exotic marine life that populates these two bodies of water. Saudi Aramco teamed up with award winning British documentary makers Icon Films to produce Desert Seas, a 60 minute natural history production that took more than a year to produce. The film's objective was clear: to expose the world to the wondrous subsurface realms of the Kingdom's waters.
We never get enough nature documentaries from this particular area for obvious reasons. I learned so much from this one.
Clicked on the video then I heard David Attenborough and I was very happy.
And I, on the other hand was very pissed off.
’’Half the reefs worldwide are dying or have died. The cause: pollution and the changing climate with warmer seas!”

"AIthough extinction is a naturaI phenomenon, it occurs at a natural “background” rate of about one to five species per year. Scientists estimate we're now Iosing species at 1,000 to 10,000 times the background rate, with IiteraIIy dozens going extinct every day. lt could be a scary future indeed, with as many as 30 to 50 percent of all species possibly heading toward extinction by mid-century."

Who's watching all the nature videos like this during quarantine?
Weird, this video is by "ARAMCO," the largest company in the world. The Saudi Arabian national company that sells oil to its vital ally, the USA (every time Saudi Arabia, the most powerful nation in the Middle East, wants something quelled, it asks America to come do it for them, like when Saddam Hussein sent Iraqi army to invade and pillage Kuwait in 1990 as revenge for making him fail his invasion into Iran by pulling Kuwaitian oil-money support midway during the long Iraq-Iran war that lasted between 1980 to 1988)

35:00 incredible. We've got symbiotic relationships of our own, dogs and cats: it's now thought that they originally would have come into contact with us of their own accord by eating our scraps and pests. Just wonderful doc. i love David and his voice and use of words. as we shelter in place, nature is benefiting from less human invasion in less then 30 days. Waterways cleaner, less smog, more space to graze, etc. How amazing!
Slightly amazed no one has pointed out that this is a PR piece from Aramco - one of the biggest oil companies in the world.
What I have watched so far seems excellent but I had my fingers crossed hoping not to see coral bleaching. I hope that is addressed later on. Oil -> CO2 -> sea temperature rise -> coral bleaching.
Actually it's the methane gas emitting from the excessive amount livestock/agriculture... I'm not one for conspiracy but the COWSPIRACY documentary was pretty hard to ignore...
Coral bleaching happens when a reef gets hotter too fast. But in the Persian Gulf, there are species of coral adapted to hot, very salty water. It's a matter of time, and evolutionary pressure, but eventually the areas of bleached coral will be repopulated naturally. Or the process could even be helped along by transplanting suitable kinds into place (although that might not be the best thing to do).
Fortunately, there is basically zero global warming, and CO2 is necessary for life, leading to greater yields of crops. :)
@@earlysda why don't you go see if you can find the edge of the Earth dummy.

My dream of hearing Sir David Attenborough document the redsea before he died has came true. 😍😍😍😍 Hearing him explore this land that has never been explored before and say Saudi Arabia is so surreal!!!
I lived in Arabia for 4 years growing up. Mid 70's with the USAF and Mid 80's (before the first Gulf War) with McDonnell Douglas, later Boeing. We lived on both sides of the country and so experienced both areas. When we were on the western side, there was a loosely organized scuba diving group in the American community that would take regular trips to the Red Sea. Though not part of the group, my family did go with them on a trip to the Red Sea. It was one of the best times of my life. "Camping" conditions were primitive to say the least. Ther was no development of any kind and you had to know where to pull off the paved road into the dunes as there were no signs or specific designated camping areas. No bathrooms, bring your own EVERYTHING, including fresh water and portable sbowers, as there were no towns nearby. It was, of course, hot. But the inshore breeze and ocean swimming helped. We didn't use standard tents, more like heavy canvas tarps suspended on poles like the portable picnic ones here, but with no netting to catch any hint of a breeze. We had to use cots because we were directly on the beach not much above high tide mark and there were nightly crab migrations. (a local Saudi taught us how to catch and hold them without getting bit, even though we were girls) We pretty much bathed in bug spray and sunscreen while there, but the BBQing was great and mom bartered among our group for anything we forgot with her famous potato salad and spaghetti. Though we didn't know how to scuba dive, a family friend took my sis and I snorkeling. You had to actually wear a sturdy pair of old shoes (no flip flops!) when you went because you had to literally walk across a coral breakwater before you got to the sea proper. The colors and vibrant life was amazing, even at the surface. Actually being there, where the clear water brings out the vibrancy of the colors far beyond what 2D photos can is definitely something to experience. Whether in areas like the Bahamas, the Great Barrier Reef, or the Red Sea. We even saw a small shark while we were out paddling around. (good thing my sis didn't know what it was at the time. She had a fit when we got back to shore and found out.) Too bad alot of the best scuba areas are too close to Yemen, (We were there before the Houthi uprising, though it was still a touchy area) though there are a few good spots farther to the north.
This video is a wonder. I learned so much about areas and creatures I thought I knew. I hope there can eventually be ROV research trips to explore the depths of these untouched wild areas. I believe Jacques Costeau even had an underwater "lab" that's still out there somewhere.
Thank you, Aramco. You are one of the FEW companies to actively protect and nurture the beautiful ecosystems where you drill, refine, and ship oil.
