298: PNSO Wuerhosaurus (Xilin 西琳) 2024 Review

- PNSO seems to have woken up from its long break, and shrugged off the ennui of incessant same clade representatives. We had the hadrosaur Edmontosaurus, the sauropodomorph Lufengosaurus, and now comes the stegosaur Wuerhosaurus. A cute stumpy little fellow who is highly detailed and smoothly painted, this is a nice little addition to anyone’s collection of stegosaurs!

Given what little material is known for this species, it’s a commendable effort on PNSO’s part. Using comparative anatomy and speculation is what really makes this feel like a realistic restoration, I’m quite happy with this one.
I think for the most part, unless you really are a nitpicker, it boils down to individual preference. With fragmentary dinosaurs, there is no definitive wrong as well as definitive right!
This little fellow looks way darker than the promotional images, and I love it. It seems so innocent and poses no threat at all. But it is a chonker, and (I don't know if I can use this word to describe a tank of a dinosaur) it looks so cute. I love its calm and gentle look. Not to look down, but this looks way more scientifically accurate than the Haolonggood model. And PNSO should continue this trend of releasing dinosaurs from different clades.

I think HLG simply used a more stegosaurian bauplan, which isn't far off if you agree with this being a sister taxon to Stegosaurus. PNSO relied more on the ratio of humerus to hindlimb elements (I believe they mainly referenced the ilium) and came up with this. But I definitely like this for its uniqueness! 😂
I think at this point, if PNSO released a couple more non-theropods, we can forgive them one or two theropods! 🤣

I like your phrase "maximise impact in... small collection." Whether by space or dollars, it's a good idea. I don't like my shelf crammed with so many dinos in a mess that it's really quite distracting, but if I were to space them out, and even take some out with a view to rotating them periodically, it looks a lot nicer. With less models you have less noise, and you won't take them for granted.
I was looking forward to this review. This Dino is very underrated. The detail on ur model was better than I expected. Also, the paint job was very pleasing. Good review. U did this model justice.
Thank you! This little guy was pretty cute, though I can see why some people may not like it. I also am not a perfectionist, so I find it easier to enjoy models and overlook minor imperfections such as sculpts, seam lines, and so on.
Overall I do agree this dino is underrated. With the saturation in the last year or so because of HLG, people are spoilt for choice. When the other brands released only a few figures a year, I think people were generally more excited.

¡Muy buena observación! De hecho, Susannah Maidment ha sinónimo de Wuerhosaurus con Stegosaurus, como Stegosaurus homheni.
Una curiosa elección de colores por parte de PNSO, no es tan conservadora, pero no roza lo exótico demasiado. Muy equilibrado y hasta plausible. Otro punto interesante es como dos marcas, como son HG y PNSO, que disponen ambas de los mismos accesos a la información existente del animal, han diseñado de forma tan diferente sus productos. Tal vez, si el nivel de pintado del Wuerhosaurus de HG estuviera a la par que el de PNSO, la comparativa estaría en un punto muy interesante y reñido. Lo que más me ha sorprendido es el diseño de la cloaca. Le han dado un nivel de detalle muy elaborado para ser un elemento que fácilmente puede pasar desapercibido. Buena reseña de la figura, compañero 😊🙏🏼
¡Gracias! Creo que el HLG Wuerhosaurus puede haber utilizado un bauplan de Stegosaurus más típico, lo cual es razonable si Stegosaurus y Wuerhosaurus son de hecho taxones hermanos.
Pero el PNSO consideró la proporción entre el húmero y ciertos elementos de las patas traseras y pensó que sería más rechoncho.
Ambos son buenos, pero podemos ver por qué PNSO todavía tiene algo especial.

Yes I've seen it! It looks very good and it seems like they have a big body of research and researchers behind it! But probably going to cost as much as the model itself just to ship to Asia, if not more 😥

At a slower race than Haolonggood, PNSO's Wuerhosaurus is an addition soon to be come a herd of Wuerhosaurus family. I wonder who else will be doing another model of this again. A wasted repeat as there are so many other species that could have been done instead, but on the other hand, this one looks more well-fed and robust than the Haolonggood version. Colors seem to be the norm with PNSO style. Will be changing the blue in the plates that are off to me.😊
I bought it a while ago and am waiting for delivery. I didn't like seeing that the eyes are very poorly painted, and there is a residue of glue/plastic left in the seam of the head.
Really depends per model, mine doesnt have any residue om the head, and the eyes are properly painted too. You also have to keep in mind the head is absolutely tiny

Indeed! For every small parts, imperfections show up on close zoom. But at normal viewing distances, you can hardly make out anything.

Will admit this wasn't one I had on my list of 'must buy' figures but.... It's so chunky! This little guys been eating his greens in excess and I adore him for it so I guess as soon as everything dinosaur get it in stock I have to buy it just for that novelty alone
Also, food for thought, this and the lufengosaurus were both figures PNSO released many years ago so they've basically remastered them into their modern quality.... I wonder if shantungosaurus is next? It's another figure they released a long time ago desperately in need of an update

As for older figures remade, I would be absolutely delighted to have an updated Shangtungosaurus from PNSO! And please, in 1:35 size, not 1:45! It's one of the most impressive hardosaurs in terms of size, and I want a model that reflects that, unlike the criminally undersized Tsintaosaurus!
@@DinosDragons I have a feeling they'd do a 1:35 shantungosaurus. Their zabad the Edmontosaurus is already very large so I can't imagine it being another haolongood Edmontosaurus scenario where it's just too small. Personally, if they did release a huge shantungosaurus id use it as a stand in for Edmontosaurus annectens. While I do own zabad, a prefer my annectens in the classic "no crested" depiction. So I can see a situation where I placed zabad as a very large E. Regalis and substitute shantungosaurus as an E. Annectens.... Unless i do an Asian shelf
Shantungosaurus is one of those species you buy for sheer size wow factor. It would add a certain amount of gravitas to any display to show the peak of hadrosaurs as in "this Is how big they truly got" I just hope it's not a museum range figure. Or at least if it is give us a baby to go along side it. Tsintaosaurus was sad as it didn't come with anything really justifying that premium price. I'd have loved an accurate reaction of its skull to show what we now know it looked like but the offerings were sadly lacking with this premium figure
Either way I'm predicting this year or next year we will get a shantungosaurus. I'd eat my metaphorical hat if we dont

I think all 3 of pnso's models have been great this year. Its nice to have this one as i think haolonggood's one is one of their weaker releases.
I think the HLG one bases heavily on a more traditional Stegosaurus bauplan, which makes sense if you accept the phylogeny where Stegosaurus and Wuerhosaurus are sister taxa. This one here is certainly different from the usual bauplan, and more interesting.
Despite me already having the haolonggood model, i already ordered this pnso one too, i love it so much, the stumpy and round look is just perfect and it also has a beautiful coloration choice on the plates since they serve as display structure
I initially hoped for the haolonggood one to fit as growth stage since the numbers showed that it has slightly smaller dimensions but it doesnt from what i can see, but i guess this time i didi the exception and got duplicate species, usually i like having only 1 figure per species or if i have more than 1 then i want them to fit as growth stages but whatever i dont regret a single thing buying this wholesome fella
I agree... there is something so winning about this cute dumpy little fellow! I like that PNSO has infused a bit of colour into the plates on top of its usual colour range, so that adds a nice touch of visual contrast to what might otherwise be another big yawn.
Besides growth stages, you might consider the HLG one to follow the phylogeny where it groups with Stegosaurus as sister taxa, while the PNSO reflects what they think the proportions would be given the relative length of humerus to hindlimb elements.

@@DinosDragons Yep! It’s a sort of general term for skin stretching between parts of an animal, usually involving the limbs in some way. It’s also used to describe the skin on bat wings and flying squirrels, but with dinosaurs you’ll most often see it mentioned regarding the legs of psittacosaurus, as it has a exaggerated patagium stretching between the ankle and the base of the tail.
It’s super cute but it’s known from such limited material that I think for sake of space I’ll have to pass it up but thank you for the review as always
Same. The questions as to the plates, spikes….anything, makes this a hard sell for me. Not saying there couldn’t be a stegosaur with short plates but too little material and it doesn’t seem to really make sense, yet.
Yes indeed, there are many collectors who refuse to buy anything so fragmentary. I've done that myself, though I did buy the CollectA Mercuriceratops to remind myself how ridiculous the situation is! 😁
i actually received mine right when you uploaded this video! interestingly enough mine looks more vibrant than yours, especially with the plates. the blue and red really pop out on mine, while the brown has more of an orange/red kind of hue
Well it might very well just be my lighting. But I'm happy that you have one that is more vibrant, although I have to say having had this for a few days, the subdued markings are starting to grow on me! 😁

It will definitely have lips, pnso already accepted lips as the norm as 3 of their most recent theropods have them, only spinosaurus was lipless but that is more acceptable according to its ecology...but i personally dont mind terrestrial theropods lacking lips tbh i dont think its implausible but definitely most likely not the case

Which is more accurate? The Haolonggood version or PNSO version?
It is hard to tell. The fragmentary nature means that anything can be filled in. I like that PNSO considered the shortness of the humerus, but with so many elements missing to directly come up with the length of the hindlimb, anything goes. You can go on aesthetics, so whichever pleases you more.
@@DinosDragons I've decided that I'm going to get both Wuerhosaurus. PNSO will represent the larger & robust W. homheni, and HLG's one will represent the smaller more gracile W. ordosensis.

Indeed... I was very uncomfortable the first time I saw those broad hips, but I've come to realise that these have an anatomical basis. As for Wuerhosaurus, the stumpy arms reinforce that image!🤣
Nice model, but this one will be a pass for me. Too fragmentary of fossil material and very interesting information about the plate shape which also seems to make this one less scientifically accurate.
Yes, I prefer it when animals are a lot more complete, which is why I have skipped on some ceratopsians in the past as well!
