Rick Sanchez J-22 lived a very boring life as a factory worker, hoping for a promotion to a better position. Deep down, he always had an inner frustration working as a simple factory worker, even though he was just as smart as all of the higher-up Ricks. Eventually, he gets fed up with living in such a pathetic and low-paying job and goes on a rampage, killing his boss and locking himself in the flavor core with Simple Rick, and subsequently demanding a portal gun to escape from his "prison". He is also not gullible, knowing that the portal gun given to him was likely pre-set to the blender dimension; however, he was consequently tricked by Rick D. Sanchez III into believing he was being promoted for his rebellious and anarchical attitude so the memory formed could be used as a new flavor for the wafer cookies.

People miss something with this episode, Rick takes them there because they can salvage any marriage, for all we know the death and destruction was all for Beth and Jerry’s benefit even though the therapists act like it’s a disaster.

That was the point of the creatures, to show them that this not what they truly believe, the problem is that their relationship is so bad that worm jerry and monster Bett actually work better as a couple.
If Jerry had a career like Beth, it'd probably be a lot more tolerable for her to deal with his emotional side, but dude does nothing. Hope some he gets character development.

tbf, it woulda made more sense to do them both at once cuz once one partner sees how the other sees them, I imagine that would dramatically impact their own perception of the other.

I want to point out that what this machine spits out is based on your thoughts about the other person _at that moment it was activated_ and this version of her mental image of Jerry was manifested _just after Jerry's mental image of her as an angry, snarling, spitting monster was manifested and she saw that was how he saw her._
If she had gone BEFORE Jerry it is very likely she would have manifested a VERY different mental image of Jerry... he manifested this because she was _in that moment_ thinking of him as a spineless pathetic worm because he saw his mildly annoyed or angry wife as being a terrifying monster to be afraid of.
Over the episode as she sees Jerry stepping up to save her, in real time she stops producing worm Jerries, and produces a couple of muscle hero Jerries (because she's seeing him as heroic at that moment) and then when he sees this and starts to showboat and congratulate himself at changing her mental image of him she annoyedly starts producing regular Jerries dressed up in Jerry fan t-shirts high-fiving each other.
So, yeah, the machine just takes your mental image at the second it activated.

She literally proved his point right even though that helmet was just plopped on his head and without any forcing, he just thought of Beth and she was perceived as a monster. Beth got butt hurt and forcibly thought of Jerry as that worm just to “get back” at him.

@@DeadlyNightshadeZ - The xenomorph Beth *definitely* didn't love the worm Jerry, it was far too selfish and narcissistic to even consider love as an option. It just saw that Worm Jerry had its uses for the situation it was in and kept it around while it remained useful
How else are you going to see the person who always uses pity and incompetence to get through life. The man had a rebound, couldn’t break up with her directly and almost had his kids killed as a result. Jerry is so pitiful it makes you hate him, he literally messed up wearing shoes and tried to use it as leverage to blame Rick after refusing ricks help
Her thinking of him as a slug is his fault.
This episode was very smart in this part, even how the monster expressed their co-dependence and the fierce willpower of beth.
I love Jerry as of season 7. He’s the only one that I’ve felt like has had steady character growth the entire show (Rick & Morty had a pretty toxic relationship until recent seasons and they had individual problems that weren’t worked on until recently). He’s owned his shortcomings and actually sticks up for himself now
Everything in this episode is gold.
The split second he turned around and said nothing like a wimp was when the thought solidified
I just realized something, this scan for their perception is pretty damn flawed since they’re doing it in the same room.
We see later that Beth’s perception of Jerry can change moment to moment, that’s probs the case with everyone else too, so if one partner goes up first and the second doesn’t like that depiction that could totally skew their perception when they get scanned.
Proud of how far our version of Jerry has come.
