My Mom was an amazing seamstress. She taught me to sew making clothing. I made my first top when I was 12 and made many clothes through high school. I gave it up when I discovered quilting 30 years ago. I never really enjoyed constructing clothing but my love of fabrics began as a small child wandering the aisles of the fabric store with Mom.

Loved your color lesson, Pat! I have improved so much with putting color, patterns, and size of patterns together by watching your for several years. My Stay at Home Quilt is coming along, but I need to finish the squares before I start doing the sashing as I need to see the entire set of blocks laid. I am making pinwheels with my snowballed corners. They may end up later in the final border, like the letter "L" going around corners with solid fabric in between. So many choices. Thank you and love you, Pat!!

I learned to quilt by helping my great aunt and having her help me. She made EVERYTHING and helped me make a quilt to give to my cousin for Christmas. Fast forward many years to 9th grade home ec and I made a denim skirt that I hated. Didn't sew for many years and then I jumped back into quilting.

One of may absolute favorite quilts is a sawtooth start mini quilt made with the leftover cutoffs from the half-square triangles. The blocks measure 4". It hangs on the harp of an old-fashioned washstand that sits in my dining room.

I learned to sew by making clothing, also. When I was 10 years old I told my mother that I wanted to make my own play clothes for that summer. And I did, at least I made all of my shorts to go with tee shirts. My mother taught me to use her Singer treadle machine, and I still have it. I enjoy using my much newer Brothers machine today, and no longer make many clothing items. Quilting is so much more fun!
Loved watching this video. Thanks for all you do in these days of seclusion to keep us entertained and occupied. Blessings.

I think you could probably use the rest of the second charms and complete another row. Then borders and it would make a goo sized lap quilt or snooze on the couch quilt.

I learned to make cloths from my mom I believe but started sewing doll cloths by just stitching fabric scraps together on my grandmother's treadle machine when I was around six years old. I LOVE that dress form fabric. So cute. I would love to use it for a chair covering on my sewing chair, and have some pink trim. : ) Triangle scraps: I bought some dollar store wire bowls.. about 5 in all, and I am using putting the cut triangles in the first one, I then stitch them between pcs. on my quilt stitching (as leaders and enders), then they go directly to the ironing board, are pressed, and then to the cutting board to square up (size doesn't matter) I have them from 1 3/4 inches to 1" sizes... but they go at that point into another basket until they are paired with a rectangle, etc. and so all in all they all make little blocks of various sizes that will someday be used in something.

Dear Pat: Finished Week #2 blocks for cbb. Yeah! I also sewed on my Seaside quilt, which was on the back burner. Will work on April Quilt Along to decide on sashing and corner blocks tomorrow. Love the butterfly, floral, gray/black fabrics. For the challenge today, I'm working on getting my fabric together for a downhill skiing themed quilt for my son. I'm going to see if I can get the book, Perfect 5 Quilts. I've been to Mackinac Island twice now and it's beautiful there so I also bought some of the Mackinac Island fabric when it first came out. I think I have a layer cake and 2 charm packs along with some yardage that was a remnant. I liked the Biscotti Quilt as well as the Pinwheel Cookie Quilt. There's books out there on how to cut your own hair. I love to bake and cook, but have been busy quilting. I don't want to get behind on quilting with you. I learned to sew by making clothing too. This was with my mom, aunt, and in Home Ec in Jr. High School. I've saved all my clipped off corners too! Thanks again, Pat!

Hi Pat, see you have 3-4 people from Wichita. I have the 1 1/2 inch Macinaw Island and going to make a log cabin throw quilt for the 4th July. Have never made a log cabin, also using FQS papers for it. Going a little crazy inside so glad the weather is getting nice to go out in. My husband goes to Braums here to get milk and I go to the store for the bigger things
I have the Pillow Talk book and have made 2 pillows from it ,glad to know we can get kits have one I can not find the right fabric for. Have been in love with the book when KJ from the FQS had her pillow contest. My sewing started in 7th grade home ec. which was Jr. High then and my Aunt was the teacher, talk about pressure all the way thru 9th grade. Each year we covered different things and by 9th we started sewing. The first quarter we made smaller items and after Xmas we started on skirts and pants with zippers. Stay safe and sew on. Doing May sounds GREAT can not wait, looking forward to it

I learned to sew from my Mom and sisters. I am the youngest of four girls and we all sewed doll clothes and then our own clothing. When I took home economics in ninth grade I learned to tailor a jacket. I still have it but unfortunately can no longer fit in it.
    Keep safe and well.

My grandmother taught me to sew at age 10 while staying with her on the one-week Easter vacation. I sewed a skirt, blouse and jacket to wear on Easter. In middle school, my mother bought a modern sewing machine then I sewed even more. By high school I sewed all of my clothes. I would choose a style I like in a magazine or store, then adapt patterns or combine patterns. When I had 3 preschoolers I quit garment sewing. I picked up counted cross stitrch to work in the evenings. These days I avoid sewing clothing these days and no cross-stitch. Quilting!!

My first sewing was 9th grade - first project was a beach bag! I made quite a few of my own clothes, then was able to take a tailoring class in college...once I figured out reading patterns I was unleashed...and still am! No dress form here - I am in a condo at the 🏖 and while I have limited space it is totally worth the trade off of sand between my toes when not sewing!

I was toying with the idea of piecing a border for this quilt but I am not sure . If I do not use it now I will in the future . Maybe a scrap doll quilt , who knows .

I just kinda repeat the meals, figure two weeks out and rotate, what I’ll never forget is when you see what items were fulfilled on the pick up list, I only expect to get 50% of the items, I make a list with two stores, a few days apart, that’s helped. I like to keep very stocked with things, I still have not opened my two unopened Costco toilet paper, and have so much hand sanitizer, but slowly that will start to get low supplies...i usu cut my own bangs, but not the rest, today I tried for a style...my go to has been pinned up, and I’m in sweats all day...no makeup, but in case the grandkids FaceTime I have been putting on makeup...now I have another book to buy, bought the one you showed a few days ago...going to start English paper piecing....

This is my first month finding your site and I love it! Thanks for doing again in May. I have always combined fabric in my stash as you do, even if it's only a small bit, because if I need more for a pattern at least I know what colors I like when I go to the store to buy more. Sometimes I like the color but not the "flavor" (the design) of the piece when combined with the focus fabric. So, another excuse to go buy more fabric..... can't complain about the hunt!!

But really it was home ec that taught me clothing construction. A bib apron was the 1st project which I thought was stupid. Who wore an apron? Me now & I have a collection. Just recently I went through a box of items from my Mom’s & there was the apron. I need to add it to the collection. I enjoy your chats whether they’re the short dailies or the fireside. My grandmother and my mom taught me to sew. And when I did sewing in school I got a "c" for a grad. Because I did it the way I was taught from my grandmother and my mom and the way the teacher told us how to do it. But I do like to make my clothes. Thank you you do keep me motivated.

What about using the white, yellow, blue fabric with the counted cross stitch bird in a table runner. Really enjoyed the color session
