I've always loved this song. It's so dark and fitting for what anxiety can feel like. The lyric "just listen to your friends, they only care and hope you're alright" is so comforting.
I believe that Dan had said that this song was about leaving home, and returning to have everything different. He's afraid of leaving his comfort zone, simply because he does not want what he has to change. "Are you drifting way beyond what’s normal? / 'Cause 'round your mind rings the words that they would say? / When you go home everything looks different, / And you're scared of being left behind." As he is away from home, he's afraid that his friends and family will move on without him and leave him behind, while his mind keeps reminding him of things they would say. Just what I think.
@Carolina Ravii Well i can think of so many conections that this song has with Hamlet. It just looks like his version of the question, to be or not to be
@Carolina Ravii could be, i was listening to this song while reading hamlet, and i think that i read somewhere that dan is a fan of shakespeare's, and i think he even mentions some characters in songs? So i made the connection
I like this when looking at the (pre-)choruse First time Don't listen to your friends / see the despair behind their eyes Don't listen to your friends / they only care once in a while Second time Just listen to you friends / trust that they're fair, look in their eyes Just listen to you friends / they only care and hope you're alright It's both the paranoia that he is deluding himself and that his comfort zone is harmful or keeping him locked up, whereas the second time it's him actually trying to convince himself that it's safe, that nobody would harm him and that he wouldn't have a reason for leaving again. In my left hand, there is the familiar / in my right hand, there's the great unknown He left home and got bitten by reality, only to find that upon returning he was still without protection
Yeah and that part of aging which is the topic of BAD BLOOD album. Becoming mature and having new responsibilities. I listened to the draw in 2017, now 5 years later I can relate to it a lot especially when i visited my hometown briefly after 2 years of living in a different bigger city. Bastille are part of my life and BAD BLOOD will be my youth forever
i don't usually comment on videos but this song resonates with me. i was released from the hospital for a suicide attempt and now i feel like i have to go back to how life was before and i still struggle with feeling like no one cares, and then feeling guilty because they do care and they almost lost me. just a lot of feelings from this song.
Hi Charlie, I'm really sorry to hear that. I really am. I know what you mean, no should ever go through something like that. You posted this months ago, I'm just a stranger and I think everyone says stuff like "your life matters" so much that it sometimes seems like those are just words without much meaning, but as someone who has felt at least somewhat worthless and who's had quite a few dark thoughts, I hope you believe I'm someone who probably understands you. If you do, please believe me when I say that you do matter, that your life does matter, that you deserve to live. I hope you can feel the love your friends and family give to you, I hope you feel like they care and hope you're alright (: please don't hurt yourself again, try to be nice to yourself. I don't usually comment on videos either I'm sorry if I talked to much. I hope you're doing great Charlie!
These lyrics really describe what it feels like to have severe OCD. Especially how the song starts as a soft, steady hum until it escalates and at the end the beat gets really fast and overwhelming and consuming. It's like the thoughts of an obsession you can't get away from.
I know it's not the intent with which Dan wrote this song, but to me, it perfectly describes depression. My own, to be exact. I've been better for a little while, but lately I can feel it pulling me back. I don't know it fits my personal situation and feelings perfectly.
The worst part is when you don't know that you're sad until you laugh and realize you haven't done so in a really long time. I've been feeling a lot better lately as well and I've realized that there are so many more depressed people out there than I thought. That's why I think its important to try and lift people's spirits as much as possible and help them through times of crisis. :)
this is exactly how i feel and i always listen to this song when im at my worst and questioning whether i want to keep living. it really explains how i feel towards everything with the "listen to your friends.." and "don't listen to your friends..." parts.
Lyrics: In my left hand there is the familiar In my right hand there's the great unknown I can see the madly different grass there But I'm drawn to wilder nights at home Don't listen to your friends See the despair behind their eyes Don't listen to your friends They only care and want to know why I can feel the draw I can feel it pulling me back It's pulling me back, it's pulling me I can feel the draw I can feel it pulling me back It's pulling me back, it's pulling me Are you drifting way beyond what's normal? 'Cause round your mind rings the words that they would say When you go home everything looks different And you're scared of being left behind Just listen to your friends Trust that their fair look in their eyes Just listen to your friends They only care and hope you're alright [3x] I can feel the draw I can feel it pulling me back It's pulling me back, it's pulling me I can feel the draw I can feel it pulling me back It's pulling me back, it's pulling me I can feel the draw I can feel it pulling me back It's pulling me back, it's pulling me I can feel the draw The draw, the draw, the draw
this song got me through an abusive situation and was the only comfort i had, thank you bastille, its 10 years later and I'm still alive because of the strength and comfort you gave me
This is the best and the most relatable song they've ever made! I fell in love with this song and i'm feeling many emotions when i'm listening to it. Everyone has a past.
Bastille are even better live, dan's raw power and ability to hit the really high notes really amazed me how talented this guy is. Can't wait for their songs coming up
The first verse is from the point of view from The Great Unknown, saying "Your friends want you to stay. They don't care about you, they just want you here." The second verse is from the Familiar and it says "If you pick the unknown, you're home won't look the same and you'll be left behind by those who didn't pick the same as you" The Draw is being torn between both and not being sure. This song and the meaning behind it makes me love Bastille even more.~
THE CONCEPT OF THIS VIDEO IS JUST SIMPLY AMAZING! NOT EVERYONE WILL UNDERSTAND IT, BUT IF YOU CONCENTRATE ON THE SONG'S LYRICS YOU'LL REALISE THAT BASTILLE IS GENUIS!
Definitely the best band I know. You all really deserve the BRITs you were nominated for. All your songs are fantastic! Keep up the good work and I have no doubt that many more awards will be coming your way.
This song... omg so much love. To me this is about dissociation. How you can always feel it coming. That you’re being removed from your world and your friends and yourself: but there’s nothing you can do just watch everything from outside of your body...
This is so good. To be honest, I don't think they could ever compose a bad song. It's perfect. I like how they didn't use bastille as their focus in the video. It's just O.o
This video has made my day, all I've done today is maths papers (because I have my maths GCSE's this week) and listen to Bastille, I am in love with 'the draw' and basically all of Bastille's songs! Great band I've loved them since day one I LOVE DAN SMITH
I think this song is about a life lived in a state of addiction. Only when he listens and trusts his friends can he help himself out, but always, he can feel the draw. Pulling him back to that life.
I always visualize this song as the "pull" or being "drawn" towards an addiction. Something you've stayed away from for a long time but you suddenly find yourself tempted by it again. And the thoughts & words that race through your mind as you're trying to talk yourself out of being tempted by it.
listening to music i listened to in high school like ten years later and wondering what life would be like if things happened differently. love you bastille
This is probably one of my favorite Bastille songs. It's the one I relate to the most, even if my story isn't anything close to what he intended it to be about! Also, it sounds friggin fantastic, but so do all of their songs.
I love this song so much. I associate the lyrics with my fear of complacency or whenever I can get really hard on myself. I have to remind myself to push forward and have faith that I can make it through
This song has captured the feeling of clarity that comes when you get away from all those dark thoughts than make you want to withdraw from everything.
The only thing pulling me back these days is my "childhood" depression that's beena cting up again since I've been alone after so long .. I just recently found out I absolutely love this song
I remember when this came out in 2013 I was 8 in elementary school and when i heard this song I didn’t know what it meant but 8 year’s later when I came across this song again. I now understand the lyrical content.
Finally there's a video for this incredible song. I listen to it all the time, super good. Definitely going to see you the 10th march. Keep the good things coming.
THE MOST PERFECT SONG IN THE ENTIRE WORLD
*****
Amen!
***** hallelujah! oh wait... AMEN!
Replace the word "SONG" with "BAND" ..works as well :)
amen sister
Pavel Juniper yup!
I've always loved this song. It's so dark and fitting for what anxiety can feel like. The lyric "just listen to your friends, they only care and hope you're alright" is so comforting.

Just what I think.
(Lightclan111) Elora Hale i think the same way about your interpretation. i also think that their new song 'the driver' is personal to dan, too.

I understand your pain Charlie.
perfect song, perfect album, perfect band!
So true!
heerenveen25 the fucking perfect album ever where Im wholeheartedly inlove with every single fucking song in it
I just can't wrap my head around how amazing they are. Literally... they are so perfect.
Breeski why do i see you in the comments, on every freaking video?? xD
Felix Chayder because I spend way too much of my time watching Bastille videos. I need rehab. But it's not as bad now haha
Breeski :D
Breeski This is my favorite Bastille song :P
Can't get enough of this song!!!
Is it... pulling you back? X)
Stephen D. King lol. its pulling me back!
Simple but powerfully effective song, killer chorus and vocals...
These lyrics really describe what it feels like to have severe OCD. Especially how the song starts as a soft, steady hum until it escalates and at the end the beat gets really fast and overwhelming and consuming. It's like the thoughts of an obsession you can't get away from.
I fall in love with this song every time I listen to it's gloriousness
I know it's not the intent with which Dan wrote this song, but to me, it perfectly describes depression. My own, to be exact. I've been better for a little while, but lately I can feel it pulling me back. I don't know it fits my personal situation and feelings perfectly.
I totally agree
I've always thought this, too. Perfectly describes my depression... Yes.
The worst part is when you don't know that you're sad until you laugh and realize you haven't done so in a really long time. I've been feeling a lot better lately as well and I've realized that there are so many more depressed people out there than I thought. Interesting. To me it fits a drug addiction. True, bastille does many depression songs, but not this one.
this is exactly how i feel and i always listen to this song when im at my worst and questioning whether i want to keep living. it really explains how i feel towards everything with the "listen to your friends.." and "don't listen to your friends..." parts.
this is my favourite song to sing as loud as possible when no one is at home
it's like "I can feel the dRAW"
***** You should see my mum when I sing Pompeii in Latin. Because REASONS.
***** Hells yeah! My dad likes Paramore as much as me, but I can't get him into Bastille.
Love your username, btw.
Every morning i wake up, get my coffee then play "The Draw" and "Way Beyond" and sing & dance. Puts me in a great mood & gets me ready for my day! ❤
@@TheHeroscafe 🤣🤣🤣
it’s puLLLLIN ME BAAACK
This song is so POWERFUL!!
I am proud that the best part is the most replayed
This, The Silence, Laughter Lines, Of the Night and Poet make this second-half of The album for me. Absolute perfection.
I'm absolutely obsessed with the raw part on the end. Dan's voice is just astonishing..
Lyrics:
In my left hand there is the familiar
In my right hand there's the great unknown
I can see the madly different grass there
But I'm drawn to wilder nights at home
Don't listen to your friends
See the despair behind their eyes
Don't listen to your friends
They only care and want to know why
I can feel the draw
I can feel it pulling me back
It's pulling me back, it's pulling me
I can feel the draw
I can feel it pulling me back
It's pulling me back, it's pulling me
Are you drifting way beyond what's normal?
'Cause round your mind rings the words that they would say
When you go home everything looks different
And you're scared of being left behind
Just listen to your friends
Trust that their fair look in their eyes
Just listen to your friends
They only care and hope you're alright
[3x]
I can feel the draw
I can feel it pulling me back
It's pulling me back, it's pulling me
I can feel the draw
I can feel it pulling me back
It's pulling me back, it's pulling me
I can feel the draw
I can feel it pulling me back
It's pulling me back, it's pulling me
I can feel the draw
The draw, the draw, the draw
An amazing song by an equally amazing band. Absolutely beautiful.
this song got me through an abusive situation and was the only comfort i had, thank you bastille, its 10 years later and I'm still alive because of the strength and comfort you gave me
I can't even put into words what this song does to me... It just takes over my whole body and mind
This is the best and the most relatable song they've ever made! I fell in love with this song and i'm feeling many emotions when i'm listening to it. Everyone has a past.

it's so dark. it's so different. it's so AWESOME

This song is actually my favorite right now, the lyrics are so clever and profound.
They're getting better and better. I feel addicted :(
THE CONCEPT OF THIS VIDEO IS JUST SIMPLY AMAZING! NOT EVERYONE WILL UNDERSTAND IT, BUT IF YOU CONCENTRATE ON THE SONG'S LYRICS YOU'LL REALISE THAT BASTILLE IS GENUIS!

Saw Bastille live last week and haven't been able to get this song out of my head since then.
This song... omg so much love. To me this is about dissociation. How you can always feel it coming. That you’re being removed from your world and your friends and yourself: but there’s nothing you can do just watch everything from outside of your body...
dans's deep raspy voice at 2:45 is my sexuality

Bastille always flawless. :)

There's not one time Bastille has had a bad song.. this is amazing
Their best song imo, so well put together and just generally epic!
my favorite song on the entire album, for sure!
I always visualize this song as the "pull" or being "drawn" towards an addiction. Something you've stayed away from for a long time but you suddenly find yourself tempted by it again. And the thoughts & words that race through your mind as you're trying to talk yourself out of being tempted by it.
Einer der geilsten Songs ever!!! Freu mich schon auf das Konzert!!
listening to music i listened to in high school like ten years later and wondering what life would be like if things happened differently.
love you bastille
always been such a mysterious haunting song! loove it since 2017!
This is probably one of my favorite Bastille songs. It's the one I relate to the most, even if my story isn't anything close to what he intended it to be about! Also, it sounds friggin fantastic, but so do all of their songs.
This music video is absolutely perfect. Perfect for a perfect song.
Bastille is so underrated. EVen though they have 20 Million streams on Spotify. You guys deserve way more!!!
I love this song so much. I associate the lyrics with my fear of complacency or whenever I can get really hard on myself. I have to remind myself to push forward and have faith that I can make it through
I love these guys so much i listen to their album repeatedly and automatically expect 'what would you do' to play after this song.
Best song by bastille
The lyrics to this song are so hauntingly good. I feel conflicted of how I can relate to this!
Best Bastille song ever!
Don't listen to your friends they only care once in a while
Later verse: Just listen to your friends, they only care and not to know why
+Dolly Vucci Edit: And hope your alright*
You sure these people are your friends?
This song has captured the feeling of clarity that comes when you get away from all those dark thoughts than make you want to withdraw from everything.
Dear Bastille, WHY?! I can't handle the brilliantness of the song and the vid.
ahhhh love this song and im singing it every single day ... why bastille ... why do you have to be so amazing
Shoutout to this album for being damn near perfect.
The only thing pulling me back these days is my "childhood" depression that's beena cting up again since I've been alone after so long ..
