Great porch sign...and it's reversible! I could seriously watch you make signs all day! I have a porch sign project saved on my cricut design space & I have my wood ready to go!
Yes! It's super important. I wasted so much money when starting out because I didn't have all this info. I'm happy to teach y'all the what not to do's haha
Sammy - you are a rock star!! Seriously, you are so real and funny and give lots of informative ideas, tips and tricks. I am a brand new beginner with the Cricut so you are my go to person for all things I can do with wood. Thank you for taking the time and effort in teaching us all.
You always have the most informative videos! I currently sell handmade crochet hats, mittens, and scarves but I love working with wood and want to start expanding my home business. Thanks for all the great inspiration and information. Not to mention your videos are so entertaining. I know I’m going to have a smile on my face when I’m done with one of your videos!
And that makes me happy Lisa! I have made tons of mistakes when it comes to wood so I want to share it all with you guys so you don't have to waste your money and make the same mistakes as I did. Thank you so much for watching! Crocheting ... I've always wanted to try but seems intimidating.
Super cute. Like you I don't have a front porch overhang. So have been afraid to put any signs out there. My welcome sign is just inside my front door. I'll habe to try this once I get a cricut. Thanks
Oh my goodness you crack me up!!! Love the wood work. Looking forward to doing more once I have a cricut more of these projects will be done. Love the furbabies and children's chitter chatter in the background. I appreciate your realness
Thank you so much Nancy. I didn't really get into wood signs until I got my cameo too. So many more things you can do creatively when you have one! Although it can definitely be done without one as well.
Beautiful!! I love wood and power tools! When my husband asks what I want for any occasion I always have some power tool in mind!! Silly boys tools are for girls lol❤️
So am I ! Seriously they have the most beautiful grain. That's why I always try to show as much wood as possible. Some would just paint over the entire thing and then paint letters on but not me. Your girl wants to see that wood peaking through.
Wow! So much useful info. I like that you gave the wood lesson, very helpful. The signs are beautiful and I love the twine at the top and the fact you can change out the decor for different seasons. Very creative. I love to watch you create projects. Tfs. You always do a great professional job.
Getting into the Fall season is just the beginning for awesome, so hopeef for holiday season!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ If you are reading this, I hope you have an amazing, Beautiful, productive and positive Fall !!!
Thank you for the in depth video. I had to go to 4 stores today all over the valley to find wood rounds, guy at Loews said evey crafter is coming in asking for them. Not sure who I am going to make them for, maybe Christmas presents ( found 4 score!)
Thank goodness you found some. I HEARD... don't know how true it is that Home Depot will be discontinuing their wood rounds which is a shock. Everywhere around me is sold out of them. Luckily I have I think three left.
Loved this video, new to the wooden sign game, but I am already hooked. I have tried sealing with the spray polyurethane and I noticed that I had to sand it down between layers, yes it dried quickly, but I had to use steel wool to smooth out the gritty almost sand-like texture on it.
Hi Mack! Sometimes the poly or spar will have that feel too but it’s nothing I’m ever too worried about because it doesn’t actually show on the sign and I figured people wouldn’t be running their signs hahahaha. But I love that you’re a perfectionist.
Love this video, so informative and enjoyable! I just made a number of reversible outdoor signs from the wood from our barn which was built more than 100 years ago. I didn't correct any imperfections in the wood, they reflected the authenticity of century old experience. Just recently subscribed to your channel and am enjoying it sooo much, going have to binge watch what I've missed! Thanks!
Oh my goodness. I bet those signs were breathtaking! I wouldn't change a single thing about those imperfections either. I would of course make any sign an customer asked me to but it always killed me painting over all the beautiful wood grain. Thank you so much for coming over to my channel and deciding to stick around for all my craziness!
I absolutely love how authentic and funny you are! I appreciated the lesson on buying wood. I’ve just recently started making wood signs after attending a local Board & Brush class on porch signs. Door rounds are my biggest seller right now! I decided to make my florals/bow interchangeable with small clear Command hooks...and they keep ordering the next “seasonal design”. I learned a lot in this video! Thanks so much! I would love to see a video on making wood trays with the handles (I’ve already bought the handles for when I get around to doing this 😂) or wall art signs made from 1x4s.
Hi Tina! thank you so much for watching and commenting! I'm so happy that I could teach ya a little something about wood. Rounds are super hot right now and they are disappearing from stores so if you find any grab them now girl! When you say making trays ... with the wood rounds? Or any kind of wood?
Hey lady! I'm glad you're doing so well! I loved this video. Not sure if someone answered your question but I went from an older model Silhouette to a Cricut maker but it is REALLY frustrating that you cannot go over 24 inches. The cricut Design space literally stops you and says your picture is too big. There is no way to override it. I want a silhouette again and I hear the Cameo 4 is awesome and can do almost everything the maker can do and it's more powerful. ALSOOOOO, if you want to go matless on the Cameo just feed in the vinyl like you would with a mat... just without one. lol.... When my husband and I first bought the cameo we had no clue you were supposed to use a mat so we just stuck the vinyl in there and it worked! haha! Hope all this jibber jabber helps! 😊
Thank you girlie. So I've tried going matless and tried using the roller and for some reason I cannot get the darn thing to work. My vinyl still moves all around or it doesn't roll properly and gets stuck. I need to do some more research and watch some more videos on it. Thank you for the comparison. I think that might be the only thing that I don't like about the Cricut
Awwww you're so lucky to live by the ocean. We moved to Kansas from Cali about four years ago and I miss it so much. I will definitely do the beach scenes.
@@UnicornDustDesigns OMG, I was born and raised in Southern California! After I got married we moved to South America and have lived here ever since...which is a very long time...lol
You're very welcome! And what's nice is you're using one piece of wood but can charge double the price since there are two signs. Okay maybe not double. But if I were to sell one sided for $40 I would sell this for $60
Love the 2-sided porch sign. The stains you used are perfect for the seasons they represent. I also want to thank you for the demo on Surebonder. I knew they made glue but was unaware that it could be used as filler that would accept stain. Informative!
Thank you so much! I think you know by now that I love reversible signs.. A lot more to come. Yes! And they have so much more I still have to try! But I was shook with the dry time and how it accepted stain like nothing. Game changer for all the pieces I thought were scrap.
I thought she said "Star Bond". I am pretty 98% positive Sure Bonder is a different class of glue. Hopefully, the good lady will inform us in writing the correct company to shop for. ☺
Great video as usual. I just finished my Fall sign yesterday. I would ❤️ to see what you make with beach scenes on the split wood. I would also like to see how you frame a wood sign if that’s possible. I never get bored watching you make wood signs.
Hi Joyce! Thanks for watching! I would love to do a video on the beach scene wood. It's done using all wood stains, no paint :) I did do a video with a frame. I'll link it down below. Let me know if I should do another one just focusing on the frame versus the actual sign. ua-cam.com/video/8ya1YtegxbY/v-deo.html
You definitely taught me some things with this video, yay! Thanks for all of the information. The sign is awesome! Oh and that little doggy had me all 🥰🥰🥰.
How did you not see that board was warped? Helen Keller saw that board was warped....😂😂😂😂 you crack me up! I love watching your DIY videos and thanks for helping us not make the same costly mistakes 😍
thank you Lisa. Took some time to figure it out. I'm always thinking to myself how can I make this process easier for myself ... and that's when I put together two mats hahahaha
Unicorn Dust Designs it’s actually so brilliant!! I made my own wood round for the first time yesterday. I made every mistake you could make I think. Despite all the errors and imperfections I love it and it’s my very own.
Hi Kim! Thank you 😊 don’t be scared. Just start small and play around with it first. Make some things for yourself and family and go from there. I made and still make a lot of mistakes.
You are an amazing crafter I would like to make a welcome sign for outside. What kind of wood you would recommend , Sammie? After looking at this diy video I will do my sign size 1x10 and 6 feet tall. I am regular subscriber from Louisiana. 🙏❤️😷💪🏽❣️❣️❣️
Ohhhh.. I so love that sign!! I love seeing your BH in your videos!! I had to show my husband your dog because he looks just like our boy Sarg!! He likes to come drool on my craft projects... ughhhh...lol I wouldn't have it any other way either!!
Oh girl the drool is intense. The other day we walked into the kitchen and it was literally hanging from the ceiling! No joke! He's a hot mess. Thanks for watching :)
I would love to see the detailed step by step process of how you made the design in the studio on the pc/mac to then work on a makeshift mat. Thats the bit that scares me as a newbie. with cameo 3 please.
Thanks for sharing the info on the wood planks. I haven't bought any wood yet but Lowe's is literally spitting distance from my house. Going to check out what they have.🗜
I know this tutorial is over a year old, but in it you mention doing a beach scene with wood with extensive cracks, etc. I would love to see a tutorial like that! If you’ve already done one, can you tell me the title and date you did it? I’ll find it and watch it! If you haven’t, would you make a video of how to do it? That would be awesome! I love you’re tutorials? I learn so much watching them! Thank you so much for sharing so many of your unique projects. They inspire me to try things I might not have done on my own! Can’t wait to watch another one!
Hahaha I love finding a good channel and binge watching it while I craft. Then I'm not even watching so I rewatch it later hahah. Thanks for coming by Emily!
Try Wood filler! I use Minwax Stainable wood filler, it comes in a yellow tube! You can get it from any hardware store, even walmart! It come regular or stainable (I prefer stainable since i stain most of all my signs & it dries the same color as the wood & then you sand it & you can never even tell there was even a hole/crack there! I LOVE it! I use it on pretty much ALL my 5ft tall signs cause it’s literally impossible to find a 5-6ft wood without ATLEAST 1 hole!😊
This was so great! Thank you for taking such a long time to go over all these wood details and products! Soooo happy I found you! You rock! ( : ♥️♥️♥️♥️ Tracy ( :
Another perfect project♥️♥️ A suggestion would be some wood framed signs. I also saw a video were they transfer images onto wood using polycrylic....just an idea 💡 😉
Hey LB! Thanks for always watching. So I did do this video on a framed wood sign. Let me know what you think ... or if I should do one that's smaller? More in detail without doing the actual sign.. ua-cam.com/video/8ya1YtegxbY/v-deo.html And I've never heard of transferring images with poly acrylic. Looks like I'll be looking at UA-cam today haha
Super cute. Have you tried dollar tree sticky shelf paper to use for stencils? Some have also Duck tape sticky shelf paper from wall mart works great on stencils. Would be a big $$$ saver if it worked.
Thank you for the tips I have a 1x10x6ft in the garage and you saved me from wasting vinyl I didn’t even measure lol when I designed in my Cricut. Also the twine at the end to change out the decor is a genius idea I would have never thought about that. Make an advent calendar for Christmas or you can show how you decorate for Halloween 👻
You're welcome girl! I did that so many times in the beginning and was damn confused and then my husband was like you know it's not actually 10" right?? I'm like ummmm obviously not dude! But now we all know. And measure just in case because like I said they can range from 9.25 to 9.5 ... I'm definitely going to make a wood advent calendar!
The porch sign looks great. I love the fall but the snow flake looks better for Christmas. The product you used works a lot like resin epoxy. I have some Modge Podge dimensional which works similar to resin. You can paint over it but I don’t think you can stain. I have some wood I plan on painting that I might experiment with. What about wood signs that you can use in wreaths? I know they will be small. I have a lot of plain wood plaques and I need some inspiration.
Hi Shelly! I swear Mod Podge has so many different items that I didn't know about. I wish I could just buy them all and do a full video on it hahaha. Only I would say I want to do a video on Mod Podge hahahahah. I actually think wood minis would be a great idea for a video! Thanks for the idea!
Hello Alba! I do reuse my brushes and all I do is run them under warm water. Since the clear is water based it comes out easily and chalk paint it super easy to rinse out as well. Just make sure you don’t let your brushes sit and dry
Sammy for one I love your sunglasses can you tell me where you got them please😊 measuring I'm lost i love how you taught me something would love to learn more😊 I love your channel you are definitely one of my favorites have a great day🥰
Very informative, thank you. I think I bought the wrong machine. I wanted to make all kinds of signs and had tunnel vision. I bought a cricut. 😔 I figured there had to be a way to make larger signs. Let me know if you learn anything. Curious are there different types of wood that are better to work with than others. Is there any to stay away from. Tfs.
Hi Donna! To be honest I haven't even been able to really dive into the amazingness of the Cricut. I know tons of people use them to make signs I'm just feeling comfortable with my cameo so it's hard to break away and learn something new but I'll definitely do it. A lot of people suggest watching Jennifer Maker for Cricut info. We also use common pine. It's fairly inexpensive and you can find so many beautiful pieces.
Hi Hannah. No I haven't. We don't build much furniture type pieces. Or at least I don't. My husband is pretty handy but we have a tiny home so we don't have the space hahaha
I loved this tutorial! I've been getting more into doing wood work things here lately. What about maybe making wood signs but framed out ones? I tried to make my own & idk if my technique was the best way 🤷🏼♀️ I love watching you & I'm so glad I came across you🧡
Hi Hannah. I do have this video where I made a frame for it. Let me know if you think I should do one that just explains the frame process and doesn't show a sign with it to - does that make sense? ua-cam.com/video/8ya1YtegxbY/v-deo.html
Thank you Sammie for the info on that 2-step wood filler! I'm stoked to try it! I live in a mill town and tend to get gorgeous end pieces that have knots galore...this could be my savior! Lol keep up the good work gurl! 💜
Of course Tammy!! I thought it was pretty amazing and knew I had to share. Pretty excited to see what the other products do. They sent me some crack filler along with a couple other things. Need to look more into them though! Oh man a mill!!!! I bet the pieces that come out of there are stunning
@@UnicornDustDesigns I make all of my garden signs out of wood and I'm still using the same can I bought last Christmas. I make a new sign for every season and holiday.😊
This might be a silly question but what kind of wood are you using. I went to the hardware store today and was a little overwhelmed by the different kinds. 🤪 What is the best kind to use for porch leaners?
@@UnicornDustDesigns I don't know what I"m doing wrong but when I went to put my stencil on my wood, it wouldn't stick to the wood. Do you put a poly coat on first? Ugh....so frustrating because you make it look so easy! haha
I love using a foam roller to paint. Makes such a smooth surface. Do you wash them out after using them? I usually chuck them but it seems so wasteful. But I hate washing paint off.
Hey Dawne! I just rinse them out with warm water. The one I used in this videos I've had for months! They last a very long time if you clean them after.
Love this video thank you! I’ve just started and was wondering do you add the clear before the vinyl? I can get my vinyl to stick to just the stained wood I’m using oracle 651 also thank you for any advice!
Hello Cassandra. No, I do not add any clear on top of my stain. Make sure you allow the stain to dry for 24 hours. Rub your hand on top of the stain and if it still feel at all oily then your vinyl won’t stick to it. Try taking a blow dryer and dry it up
Seriously love this!!! What are the sizes of the letters? I always have a hard time figuring that part out on my Cricut. 😐 also what if I don’t have a sander what would I use? And one more question the 1x10 do I have the store cut it to a 10x45?
If you didn't have a sander I would use a sanding block. You can get them at a hardware store or even dollar tree. You just need a rough one and smooth one. Yes, you would tell them you need a 1x10 cut to 45" long. Hmmm someone asked that down below - I'ls have to find my answer.
I love this DIY! When you have a piece of wood with a really pretty grain do you ever just like poly over it and then use it so the grain shows also or do you always just paint or stain?
Ohhhh if I purchase a piece of wood that I don't want to cover with paint I stain it with weathered oak to keep its natural look but also seal it :) You could also use mineral oil
I LOVE watching your videos, you are so dang funny not to mention your wood pieces are beautiful! So why can you not use just a plain wood filler on the wood instead of the liquid stuff?
Thank you Lisa. You could definitely use a wood filler. I think what excites me about this one is there's not wait time. I can fill all these holes and spray.. then move on with my piece. With the wood filler I would fill and then have to wait a lengthy amount of time before I can move onto my next step. I also don't like how wood filler looks if you put stain on top of it.
I love watching you make signs. The fur babies are adorable.
Thank you Betty! Can’t wait until wood prices drop!
Great porch sign...and it's reversible! I could seriously watch you make signs all day! I have a porch sign project saved on my cricut design space & I have my wood ready to go!
Hahahah why thank you Amy!!! Well get that wood out and start your sign lady! Make sure to tag me if you post it online. I would love to see it.

thank you Lisa.
Thank you so much for the video on wood. Very helpful!
You're so very welcome Dorothy.
Thank you for the wood lesson. I love both sides. I need to start I'm scared of messing up the wood.
Hi Kim! Thank you 😊 don’t be scared. Just start small and play around with it first. Make some things for yourself and family and go from there. I made and still make a lot of mistakes.
Love this! And so does my son!
Love!!!!! I really love the fonts you used!!
Thank you Jill!
Very helpful. Tfs. Would like to see more signs.
It's my pleasure sharing them all with you. Wood Signs almost every Wednesday Marsha.
He likes to come drool on my craft projects... ughhhh...lol
I wouldn't have it any other way either!!
Hello Laura. Thank you so much for watching. I will definitely write that down in my book for a future project :)
This is great information. I’m working on my first round it the 24”. Wish me luck!
Thank you Stephanie!! Wishing you luck!! I know it will turn out great
Love these. Seaside and summer
Thanks for sharing the info on the wood planks. I haven't bought any wood yet but Lowe's is literally spitting distance from my house. Going to check out what they have.🗜
You’re very welcome. Now, I do have to say that I would price your wood out. We have three stores we frequent and Lowe’s is by far the most expensive.
Thanks for the tips!! Love the sign!!
You're so welcome Dawn!
I’d love to see a whole video on wood signs for a coffee bar area! Or using wood to create a mug holder! (Or both!) hahaha thank you!!
Thanks for all the ideas Britney!!! I will definitely write them down
Sammi, this was a very informative video. Great tips. Thx. 😊
You're so very welcome Brenda.
Currently binge watching your videos at 10pm while I’m impulsively painting something 😂
So good to know! Thank you very much for the tip Erica!
This was so great! Thank you for taking such a long time to go over all these wood details and products! Soooo happy I found you! You rock! ( : ♥️♥️♥️♥️ Tracy ( :
Aww thank you so much Tracy! I'm happy you found me too!
Another perfect project♥️♥️
A suggestion would be some wood framed signs. I also saw a video were they transfer images onto wood using polycrylic....just an idea 💡 😉
Hey LB! Thanks for always watching. So I did do this video on a framed wood sign. Let me know what you think ... or if I should do one that's smaller? More in detail without doing the actual sign.. ua-cam.com/video/8ya1YtegxbY/v-deo.html
And I've never heard of transferring images with poly acrylic. Looks like I'll be looking at UA-cam today haha
Yes on the beach scenes!!!!!
Super cute. Have you tried dollar tree sticky shelf paper to use for stencils? Some have also Duck tape sticky shelf paper from wall mart works great on stencils. Would be a big $$$ saver if it worked.
Hello Carolyn. I haven’t tried that. But I definitely should. I have some random wood one I should try it on
Thank you for the tips I have a 1x10x6ft in the garage and you saved me from wasting vinyl I didn’t even measure lol when I designed in my Cricut.
Unicorn Dust Designs lol and I am once I am done with it I will tag you on IG
Really great video. Informative. Great help for us x thank you. X
It's my pleasure sharing all of this info with you guys!
Super cute sign, I have a maker what vinyl did yoy use?
Hello Elizabeth. I use oracle 651 vinyl
Hi! Wondering if you re-use your brushes? How do you clean them/care for them after staining and painting??? Thank you! 😍
Hello Alba! I do reuse my brushes and all I do is run them under warm water. Since the clear is water based it comes out easily and chalk paint it super easy to rinse out as well. Just make sure you don’t let your brushes sit and dry
Sammy for one I love your sunglasses can you tell me where you got them please😊 measuring I'm lost i love how you taught me something would love to learn more😊 I love your channel you are definitely one of my favorites have a great day🥰
What are you lost on when it comes to measuring ??? Let me watch the video haha. I don’t know what sunglasses I’m wearing haha
Loved this! How would you do black lettering on a light sign. So black letters on a white sign?
Hello. I personally would stain my wood true black and then lay my stencil and paint over it.
Both sides look great! All the info rocks girl. And Sammie you look fantastic lady. I think if you don't have imperfections you haven't lived😊
Thanks Helen! I appreciate those kind words !
Love this! awesome job, as always!
Thank you so much Teresa!
Have you ever made like a ball trophy case? That holds homerun balls. I guess it would also be some kind of framing too
@@UnicornDustDesigns yes, that would be cool! I always find tutorials more informative 😊 Thank you. I'll go watch that video too.
@@UnicornDustDesigns we get some blue pine (bug kill) now and then that is amazing...it's stains like crazy beautiful 😀
Oh man! I’m going to look that up so I can see how beautiful it is
Just looked it up! Stunning
@@UnicornDustDesigns right?! 😁😁
I love seeing Hank..I’d would like to see crafts for dog lovers.
That's a great idea Michael!
New subscribers!
Love everything about this sign!🍂🍁❤️
Thank you so so much!! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and subscribe
Thank you for all the knowledge!
It’s my pleasure to share it all with you ❤️
Yes it would be nice to do a video tutorial on the wood beach
Noted! Thanks for watching Nahrin!
it turned out so nice!!! what type of cloth are you using to stain?
Hello Letty! Thank you so much. I'm using a microfiber towel :)
I use spray polyurethane and it works great. I usually put 2 or 3 coats.😊
How long does a can last you with using that many coats?
@@UnicornDustDesigns I make all of my garden signs out of wood and I'm still using the same can I bought last Christmas. I make a new sign for every season and holiday.😊
Love it! So cute!
Thank you so much Tina!
This might be a silly question but what kind of wood are you using. I went to the hardware store today and was a little overwhelmed by the different kinds. 🤪 What is the best kind to use for porch leaners?
I love your videos! Great tips!
Thank you Cynthia! I appreciate you watching.
Try taking a blow dryer and dry it up
Unicorn Dust Designs thank you so much seriously this helped so much ! ❤️ I love all your work
Seriously love this!!!
I am going to use tall cabinet doors. Just can't do both sides. I was thinking about painting buffalo on it!
Oh that would be soooo cute! Yes! I haven't tried painting the buffalo check yet :/
So cute!
Thank you so much Lisa.
I’d love to see those beach scene you were talking about.
They are so therapeutic to create and I just make them with my wood stains. No paint at all :)
Unicorn Dust Designs can’t wait to see a video. I’m going to look on your business page and check some out.
Love this! I don't know if it's to soon but maybe Christmas/winter. Girl your asking the wrong person for this. Lol. I depend on you always~😘
LOL .. so next Wednesday I'll be doing my LIVE Q&A and I think the following week I will be doing a Christmas wood round.
Unicorn Dust Designs yay sounds good to me. Hopefully I'll get off on time if not I'll watch later.
~Have a beautiful day~
I LOVE watching your videos, you are so dang funny not to mention your wood pieces are beautiful!
I also don't like how wood filler looks if you put stain on top of it.
super informative!!! thank you
You're so very welcome! Anything I can do to save y'all some money and sanity :)
