Disney's Moana introduced much of the world to a sea-going culture, even the most seasoned Mariner knew little of. I have seen a little of the Planets oceans. I believe The Sea is an ever-changing, living organism. She is a beautiful, harsh mistress.
The Samoan language part of the song stirs my ancient soul, in a way I could no longer keep to myself. Thank you for sharing a stunning bit of your world, Mr. Foa'i.
I hope the Disney people paid you handsomely.

Meli ssa the problem with that is that you know damn well they're not going to cast a bunch of Hawaiian or Polynesian actors. it's going to be a bunch of white people that are using sunless tanner or others that are not of that actual culture: it's going to be whitewashed

    • @mi-moon_

    [Verse 1: Lin-Manuel Miranda]
We read the wind and the sky when the sun is high
We sail the length of the seas on the ocean breeze
At night, we name every star
    We know where we are
We know who we are, who we are
    [Hook 2: Chorus, Lin-Manuel Miranda]
    Aue, aue
We set a course to find
A brand new island everywhere we roam
    Aue, aue
We keep our island in our mind
And when it's time to find home
    We know the way
    [Hook 3: Chorus, Lin-Manuel Miranda]
    Aue, aue
We are explorers reading every sign
We tell the stories of our elders in a never-ending chain

    Te fenua te mālie

I watched live on tv, the sound settings etc was not good. The lead vocal's (Opetaia Foai) microphone should be a little bit louder.. that's me hahaha

    Gotta love the representation :)
I adore this movie cause I've always found Polynesian culture to be so beautiful. I study linguistics, and I'm aiming to learn about Polynesian languages soon 😁
It's also very cool to see new types of representation, like Coco :) I'm not Mexican, but a part of me was like "hey, close enough to my own culture" when it came out lol

Right? Lol but for reals probably not for me. At least not Samoan. The sons have to send their moms (parents?) money even if they’re struggling to provide for their own family. I was watching 90 Day Finance and one of the guys is Samoan and his obligations put a lot of strain on his marriage.
