Excellent video Mel! Note that when sending Paypal with another currency besides British Pounds, don't let Paypal do the currency conversion. Many credit cards don't charge a conversion fee. That way, more money goes to Mel and we want him to keep making new videos :)
Love your work, Mel! Here's another tip: add/mix enough water to spackle to where it becomes runny, almost liquid, submerge the foam i the slurry, shake it off outside/somewhere safe to do so, and let it dry for a few hrs., repeat once or twice (depending on how hard you want it to be), and allow it to cure for 24-hr period. Makes great rough lava rocks. Then paint!
I love this!!! I am just about to begin a D&D game that will take place in an underground maze of lava tubes from an ancient volcano. Can’t wait to start making these with you
Another great video Mel, and it's great to see the old enthusiasm and positivity has returned. If I may, I have a suggestion that could either be a standalone video or be included in one that you have planned. I think that it would be good if you showed how you cut out and bevel your bases, including any do's and dont's. I'm sure that people just starting out making their own terrain would find it to be quite useful. Cheers mate.
Great video, really interesting stuff. Now I want to make a volcanic board. I also think back some months ago and regret having said no to a friend who asked me if I wanted this kind of foam for crafting.
Thank you Mel for this awsome tutorial as always. Good to see you back and in good shape. I used the small pieces of foam and a similar technic to make smoke, and the colors faded away after a few months. I wonder if the pigments were absorbed by the foam. Will sealing it with stucco, as you did, help?
Thanks for this. A few years back, I made a stone wall photo/video backdrop for my studio, using the same kind of foam. But I coated it with casting neoprene I already had. Too pricey, too liquid too! Next version is coming up soon, and I'll see about adapting your approach to stiffening this foam, by using a lighter (weight), flexible compound, maybe a polymer adhesive that comes in a caulking tube.
That looks really well, I Like those macro crystals and emeralds, they really make it come alive. How about adding some light flock to the baseplate of the pieces, to make it look like the lava crept over it or perhaps vegetation setting back in, it could help blend the pieces in with the underground their going to be placed on and add some more colour.
These look like in a grey colour, with a maybe some grey tile grout on the surface, they might make cool moon rocks! I’m working on a moon board for playing Lunar. I’ve also seen this sort of thing being made with actual lava rocks.
I was just on Mt Versuvius last week, and these rocks look so similar to what I was seeing up there (green crystals aside...). Only difference was a bit more brown/red mixed in amongst the black/grey, but I'm sure that could be adjusted to personal taste 😊🌋
Really nice technique, unexpected, simple, and very effective. I wonder whether you could make thinned PVA with some black paint and then use the sponge as a sponge and completely saturate it with the paint and glue. This might give you a more rigid structure and also a color that will not show damage as much.
Mix of cat litter and ground up cork has gotten me halfway there but I need bigger jagged chunks that were porous. I'm going to add half small bits of sponge like this and mix them with my current mix and I think it'll make a nice volcanic mountain surface I'm looking for. (not full lava but a mountain path that has remnants of ancient lava flows)
I've done something different for volcanic pieces. before attaching to a base, I take a bucket and mix water, pva/white glue, and black ink on a warm day. Squeeze the piece in your hand and keep it that way as you dunk it in and let it expand while in the liquid. Pull it out and squeeze it before repeating a couple times (Just shake it off the last time to get excess off) and then let it dry over newspaper or whatever you have that will protect whatever surface your putting it on...I just do it outside on spread newspaper or trashbags. Then I base it if I want or leave it
What a great start to my weekend to see you back on top form. It's like you never left mate, really pleased for you! I'm assuming it was the lighting, but in the opening pictures of the rocks they look more brown, but in the actual painting steps they look more black / grey - did you add any brown paint / inks / washes, or was it just a trick of the light?
to do this with the "normal" foam after most of the shaping couldn't you just stipple on a thicker drywall paste to get a similar texture instead of using furniture foam with that texture?
There is a game I have where it’s underwater. It’s called deepwars. It has underwater lave fisher, hydrothermal vents, underwater ruins, coral, sunken ships, ruined submarine. Sea life like jellyfish, krill sharks, school of fish. You should show how to make underwater terrain.
YEEEEEEEE MEL IS BAAACK. Regarding the patreon Mel, i see 1 dollar per video, but can we get an stimate about how many videos a month? (To know if I can economically allow to give my suport, if you are making 100 videos per month im dead -but happy that you can make content xD)
oh yeh cos it would probably melt it and ive enquired at my local upholstery shops about this foam and because it all has to be treated now for fire ect it costs a fortune and for a 2ft x 2ft piece im looking at £25@@TheTerrainTutor
It's good to be back in the saddle folks!
It's truly wonderful to see you back at it!
Nice to see
Never had much doubt, you're looking like you was born on the saddle. 👍😉
Great to see you back with the tutorials :-)
the chip composite foam rock version gave me more of a coral vibe might use it for some AoS underwater terrrain. thanks :)
Thank you!!! I've got some underwater stuff coming up and decent coral pieces will be really useful. Thanks for pointing that out, Sam.
Excellent video Mel!

Am not the foam plucker am the foam pluckers son 🤪😂great vid Mell 👍Gona use this technique for Alien jungle outcrops . Brilliant idea .

Plucking marvellous Mel 👍👍

Plenty more for you to come then mate!
The one with the chip foam makes a superb underwater volcanic environment as well. Just add some coral and tall plants and it would sell itself.
Ah Mel, so good to see you cracking on. :) All that plucking - bet your completely plucked out.
Welcome back, Mel! The video looks amazing! Fantastic lighting and multi-camera views.
Nice one, Mel. You're rocking it.
Just nice to see you back my friend! Take care and all the best.
Good to see you going back to basics...

I can do that mate
Great video, Mel! Interesting idea. Good to see you back. Cheers.
Reminder set to watch
It's official, the boss is back. Keep on like this!
This'll be useful, got a sci-fi set in prospect and I was not looking forward to the scatter terrain, this will do the job nicely, thanks.
Awesome rocks Mel
I'm working on some terrain for Lunar, and this will be a big help there. Thanks mate!
No problem 👍
Great work Mel :)
This is great, very helpful to my terrain making.
Absolutely outstanding
Dear Mel, Very Informative & thought provoking! Don't worry, I often get my mucking words fuddled! 😂 Best Wishes Johnny
"Sprinkle when you Tinkle"! I broke down laughing so hard, when you said that one Mel!!! Lovely video too! musk try this technique out!
Back in Black!

Yeah, it'll help, did you seal the pigments in?
@@TheTerrainTutor No, I only painted the foam (base coat and dry brush). Thank you, i'll try your technic when I'll redo them.
Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho USA is a great inspiration for this type of terrain. Lots of pictures on the web
Cheers bud!
digging all the new content mate
Good job Mel! I have missed these tutorials. Keep up the good work
I love it. This is one of the best volcanic builds I've seen. Keep it up, thanks!!!
Mel back in the game!
Amaizing, thank you for your tutorials.

Foliage effects is something I need to play with
Always great to see these videos, super clean and clear and a great bit of inspiration.
Thank you..
I'm working on a modular Kill Team board which has a theme like this so thanks for the tutorial! Mine's got embedded magnets under the surface too

Sofa foam mate
hi mel. can you use super glue to glue the foam onto a board as i havent got a hot glue gun ?
I wouldn't, go for PVA mate
