A next level painting tip on the lava -- mix a little silver or bluish gun metal in with the black. Freshly hardened lava has a bit of a glassy sheen to it.
Exactly. It's a kind of silica glaze that forms on the surface of the lava, and sometimes even cracks and peels off when it cools, with a sort of chiming sound. Also, lava comes in two basic forms: A'a, the rough, broken up kind (very hard to walk on!) and Pahoe'hoe, which forms interesting ripples and waves as it spreads, which would make an interesting crafting challenge to create some striking terrain effects! I'm thinking about some dungeon terrain based on lava tubes and their peculiar geology, as well. =^[.]^=
This is true for pāhoehoe lava flows, but not so much for an 'a'ā field; 'a'ā looks like the stereotypical' lava rock' you buy for landscaping or grills - jagged, clinkery, and rough. Particularly after it has had a few days to weather, any sheen will almost completely disappear.
If you wait about 10 minutes after applying sculptamold, you can go back with a little water and make it totally smooth just by using your fingers. I use it in all my dioramas.
SUPERB work! Same technique reminds me of when I would have to apply a wash to my skeletons decades ago or dry brush weapon and chainmail metal. That black paint around the outer edges makes ALL the difference /thumbs up!
Wow!!! You just saved my volcano!!! After a week of making a volcano waterfall I couldn't figure out how to make the lava look real. Thank you so much for this video! Your scene looked AMAZING!
Great stuff! FYI, The depth of the sculptamold doesn’t effect setting time as its a chemical reaction and not evaporation (although it does dry a little further if left) so you can pile it up no problems
Hope your hiatus is everything you are needing. You and yours are in thoughts and prayers across the world. This is a fantastic build!! I'm so excited to try these. Slainte!
Hey Wylock great video! I actually just did a lava themed table about a week ago and hit the same problem you did with the colors. I solved it the same way too except the very center I painted a yellow/white mix and was super happy with the outcome.
Awesome build, thanks for all you do to contribute to the hobby. I always look forward to your videos. 😁 As others have suggested you can try making your own, or if you don't want to, and want to support another Crafter in the UA-cam family, Luke's APS does produce some commercially and has shops that have his products located in the USA and I believe Australia, and for sure in the UK where he is based. I know you all are always trying to help one another out which is one of the things I really love about this community....it actually feels like a community of interconnected people. 😉 Thanks again for sharing with is and all your awesome ideas! You're awesome!
Major props. Your work is always educational and amazing. Doing the scatter terrain on my kelpie stable. As soon as I finish I will figure out how to send you some pictures. I would like your opinion on the whole set.
As an extra painting tip, the striated ridges on the surface of lava are the coolest part. To replicate that, you can drybrush the next shade darker onto each place in the gradient, so light drybrush of orange over yellow, light of red over the orange, and then, of course, the glossy black onto the red.
Great tips how to wet blend. Thank you Sir! And I love those modules that I got from You! Really not typical hack'n slash, but you also have to think. I love those :-)
An alternative method I recommend for doing the lava colors, start with reds - darker to lighter- then do oranges and finish with yellows. The idea being building your lava look from bottom paint layer to top.
that's awesome! I have noticed the "not really black" black spray paint thing before, but if you use krylons camo line with the ultra flat black it's a nice true black
Truly superb work! I've been trying (and struggling) to utilize blending to mimic bioluminescence for my next vid. Your close ups of the process really helped! Thanks for another awesome tutorial, Wyloch!
For the technique you used for the volcano, you might consider filling in much of that space with crumpled balls of paper. It gives you a nice gross texture. And instead of PVA and paper towel, you might want to try paper and hydrocal. Model railroaders call this "hard shell terrain", and it's easy, quick, light, and durable as a base to do your final surface texturing. Works for more lush terrain as well.
Like the blending lava affect, some porous black rock and darkening around the lava flow as contrast may give a more realistic look. For game table these look great.
Ok so let me try again lol. _"Here is my experience"_ : This stuff was REALLY easy to work with but what I found was the Sculptamold can puff a little as you're scooping it up, putting it in the cap and mixing it so I would advise wearing a mask just until you got it properly mixed. Rubber gloves are great too as you can still feel the texture. It's a bit like porridge. I can confirm that the 2 parts SM and 1 part water is SPOT ON! It was PERFECT consistency the first mixing but on the second mixing I got a bit over confident and went 4 parts SM and 2 parts water. As Wyloch said it does start to harden a bit after about 5 mins so stick to his recommended amount (small batches). I was using a wooden party spoon to spread it around initially but just ended up using my fingers (it was easier for me to sculpt) and it gave it a more bulbous texture. You may find edges which have a thorny edge as you lift your tool or fingers off the mold. You can easily pat it down lightly or even after about 10 - 15 minutes if you dab a little water on your finger. It smooths out REALLY well. I don't know what kind brushes were used in this video but I just bought some bog standard kiddy craft brushes. As I was painting the black acrylic onto the model I notices some tiny boulders would come off but I might have been painting too aggressively. I later dabbed a drop of water to each squeeze of the acrylic paint and mixed it and it made it go SOO much further. Tomorrow I shall ad the greys. Hope I don't mess it up /fingers crossed Here is a link to the progress so far: imgur.com/gallery/first-amaco-sculptamold-sculpt-1-mHlbg7K
I made these awhile ago and I just wanted to share if you don’t have Sculptamold, I have good results with drywall spackle from the Dollar tree. I believe it’s seasonal, but any filler will work.
The table set up at the end looks awesome (made better by the appearance of a few Genestealers of course ;) ...I really must get my own 'stealers painted up at some point).
Thanks for the Lava lesson! I'm ready to try it out! And that lava plume! Wondering if I could use the paper mache method (newspaper + elmer's glue) for the lava domes as well in lieu of the sculptamold? Although I did like how sculptamold looks on your model. I might give it a try and see.
Here is a tip I discovered by accident. Test out Gorilla Glue White Pen. When you spread it out it foams up and drys hard with a oozing appearance. It actually acts like "expanding foam", just in miniature scale.
You might want to consider shifting how to do the handle part, insert it from the underside and use it to add more reinforcement for the structure as you continue. Less of a potential issue due to it being cardboard for the structure. Possibly adding crushed scrap paper or newspaper to make it slightly more sturdy when you apply the sculptamold because that does add water to the mix and a more sturdy base for it helps...might also want to try giving it a dusting from a primer before the sculptamold if you're in a wetter area, it would help prevent potential issues with mold on the interior that could ruin the entire piece.
@wyloch’s Armory I would have suggested a clear coat around the lava to a. Give the blend a cool effect b. To also give a more glowing surface. Is there a reason you would suggest otherwise? (Very New to this)
I wanne make a lava gaming board with a few stone pillars in it. What is a good thing to use to make the lava, hot glue is not so handy because the board is pretty big.
@@rumo_der_wolpertinger7742 Well, no. The brush was still kinda loaded with light grey paint, moreso than for a drybrush. Selective means just pick a few spots to hit.
lol you didn't wanna wait 24 hours for the DMscotty slurry to dry so you waited 48 hours for the sculptamould to dry lol just givin ya hell man cool video
Can you do modular volcanic dungeon tiles. Please. Expand on the early ones. Maybe a tile that is half stone half lava. Or a field tile with a volcanic crag built into the tile
I make my own scultamold from equal parts plaster and papermache material from the local dollar store. Costs about AU$5 for a kilo of scultamold. Also, great build!
This with a slight tweak would work so well for khorne terrain, instead of painting the lava like lava use GW's Blood For The Blood God and hey presto blood flow rock formations
I'm excited to show some new materials and techniques in this video. I tend to fall into the same-old rut with a lot of my work, and I really tried to venture out on this one. Hopefully it's a good meta-lesson.
Great video! Ive always had a hard time crafting rocks as i tend be too uniform with my cuts. This is going to help me out immensely with my dioramas, any tips for making still water and waves?
I just ordered that putty from Ebay just now. Although the texture in this video is PERFECT for my current woodworking project, can anyone give me tips on creating a carved stone texture rather than the randomized jagged ones in this video. The reason being is I would like to do a hybrid of the two. Something like King Thrain's throne in _The Hobbit_ films. Natural rock formations blending into straight cut geometries.
For the volcano feel like using crinkled aluminum foil would have given a more volcanic rock look, yes hot glue and aluminum foil is a recipe for finger burns. Maybe work gloves?
You should check out Chest of Colors website on how to do lava splashes. When I have some free time I'm going to try and perfect what they did myself for my gaming table as I enjoy volcanic areas to game on.
I messed up! I didn't glue gun the lava so when I painted on the yellow (no water) it picked up the black from the surface and went dark. I carried on but have to wait for that layer to dry now to act as a base for the next coat. DOH!!! :[

What is the difference between drybrushing and overbrushing?
Overbrushing is basically a very, very heavy drybrushing. You leave some paint on the brush. And use a little more pressure.
Wyloch's Armory ah ok. So when you Said you were doing a very carefull and sparing overbrushing, that was basically drybrushing?

Excellent glow effect on the lava there! Have you considered applying it to a blacksmithing or industrial setting where it could work as molten metal?
You should try "Gaps and Cracks" foam
You can smooth out sculpt-a-mold by working it while it dries. See Luke Towan’s videos. He uses it a lot.
Thx for the tip

How much Sculptamold did you use for this scatter?
Luke's APS was using it, but developed his own version due to the volume he required.
I used EXACTLY all of the bag I showed in this video, to make all of the pieces seen at the end. It was pretty fortuitous.
@@WylochsArmory thanks for reply; fortuitous indeed.

Next time you paint lava try starting with a dark red as your base. then go from a lighter red, to orange, to yellow
