For me, it was actually Ableton Live’s native devices. I underestimated how powerful and awesome Operator, Analog, and Saturator are. And Echo. It’s easy to get allured by 3rd-party devices and fail to appreciate how high quality some of the native devices are in your DAW 👍🏻
Some of Logic’s stock plug-ins are stellar, too. Sometimes, the stock is so good it isn’t even worth upgrading.
@@HydetheRapper Which do you think are Logic's strong points, besides Alchemy?
@@kostoglotow I do more mixing than producing, and I use Logic’s stock EQs all the time. The pitch correction and autotune plug-in are also stellar, with the reverb and delays being at least cromulent. For production, the sampler and quick sampler are amazingly easy to use. I can go through the AU instruments, too, but those are more hit and miss. I also don’t have as much experience with things like drum designer and similar stock plug-ins in Logic, but I have heard great things.

Another insanely cool and fun feature of Microtonic is the morph sound cross fader at the top that gives the option to morph each and every parameter between two versions of the same kit. Love this vst, one of the best drum synths out there 🙌
I actually had a section about that in the video but cut it for the sake of time. Easily one of the most interesting features and such a great way to get a ton of variations on your favorite kits/presets.

Cam suggested a channel strip helps with quick mixing decisions. I'm confused about how Infinistrip could have this advantage since it has so many options? (Trying for "help me understand" rather than "you mother smells of elderberries.")
Gulfoss and Reference might be my most valuable plugins I have in the sense that I use them on every project, neither of them really have a comparable alternative, and their contribution to the quality of each track is incredibly high. Hard to imagine going back to not having them.
I find with Gulfoss I almost always drag the HF range limiter slider over to prevent it from applying that big boost it always gives in the 10-20k range.
I have two that i've been enjoying lately
1. Peel by zPlane. It's basically an EQ visualizer that kinda looks like a screensaver but you can use your mouse to select and isolate particular frequencies or ranges and do stuff with them. It's pretty insane, you just like... drag your mouse over the spots that light up when vocals are there and then you can just turn them down. Plus its $40.
2. On the smaller side, theres a fun small volume shaper/sidechainer called STFU by Zeek. You can set up two envelopes and crossfade between them, it can sync to midi or bpm. And its free.
Gullfoss sounds like when I tried following a pink noise based eq leveling for mastering, the one beat I mastered with that was the best sounding beat I've ever done. I can't remember how it was done nor where I saw that tutorial, so I haven't been able to replicate that, but Gullfoss seems to work similarly. I've been eyeing soothe recently so I might try Gullfoss instead, it looks very powerful
Soothe and Gullfoss do very differemt things, and are imo both essential in all my mixes
As someone else said soothe and gullfoss are different tools for different jobs that both are excellent at. Soothe is amazing for taming frequencies that are harsh or junky and literally “soothing” a sound and is designed to be used throughout a mix, whereas gullfoss is designed to be put on the master to balance the mix towards what sounds most natural to the human ear. Obviously you can do whatever you want with whatever you want but I would recommend both because they just don’t do the same thing and the way they handle frequency content is very different
Slick EQ GE by Tokyo Dawn. I stopped using it because i got "better" plugins, but then i had worse mixes. 🤷♂️

I always tend to forget about Hornet ThirtyOne… it can work wonders on the master bus, even if you think you already have quite a good mix (or you have a “not-quite-ready” mix and want a quick bettermaker to give you an idea where to optimize your mix).
It is kind of similar to Gullfoss in that it does some automatic balancing/unmasking, but works with a very different technology. And of course, being from HornetPlugins, it is super affordable…
For me it has to be Phaseplant actually. I mostly use VA synths like Diva, and the occasional FM synth. I like to think I've gotten pretty good at synthesis over the years, but nothing I make sounds newer than about the early 90s, and it's one of the things people constantly complain about in my music. I've tried a few of the other "powersynths" before, but I always end up in the same places, so I didn't figure Phaseplant would do much for me. I used it for the first time in a song last week and the first thing people have said when they hear the song is that they love the sound I made with Phaseplant, so that's definitely a sign I need to make a point to use it more.
Microtonic was my second VSTi I ever bought and I still use it today.
Great video! Might have to try that drum synth. Also I'd be curious if there are plugins that went the other way for you. Any that seem cool at first but that turn you away as you use them due to limitations or issues. A forewarning for us.
I really like using Drums That Knock especially when sampling breaks into the MPC. It adds that modern drum sound to old breaks or weak drums without having to add extra kicks or 808's layered beneath them.
your videos are always so inspiring, there's nothing better than watching someone who truly loves what he's doing. out of all the youtubers out there doing this kind of stuff, you definitely do it the best.

Love infiniStrip, I always use it on my drum bus! One question about gulfoss (which sounds really good) - where in a mastering chain would you put it? Just wondering how it handles signals that are already a bit clipped or compressed?
I mean you can place it where you like, but generally I place it right before the master limiter after a soft clipper (which is where it's placed in the example in this video) and that seems to work fine. I believe it's intended to be at or near the end of the chain though

Hey, thanks for hooking me onto PhasePlant some time ago!
Acoustics hint - do you see that dip in the low end as well as the boost slightly higher, that SoundID is compensating for? That's SBIR. Do this experiment - move your speakers closer to the center of your room (further from the backwalls). This will move the dip and boost to lower frequencies. The goal of the exercise - move these 2 culprits below 50 hz, where you either way don't "hear" much. You can use Sonarworks' calibration mic, or any omni measurement mic with EQ analysis on the mic channel and running a pink noise at -18dB RMS aiming for 80 dB SPL coming out of the speakers. Trust me, SBIR can't be fixed with SoundID and you'll have a tremendous improvement in transient response and low end detail if you move these out of the way. It's your room more than your speakers (specifically your backwall).
PhasePlant is a monster - the new 2.0 version is absolutely nuts too!
Thanks for the heads up on that! A colleague of mine who's more into acoustics than I am mentioned something sorta similar. Unfortunately I'm not sure how flexible my placement is as my studio also functions as a filming space so things are kinda 'locked' to some degree but I may shuffle things around to try that out if I can figure out new placements that make sense!
Of course, Sound ID is excellent for managing the rest of the spectrum (mid-high/comb filtering from the desk), don't want this to read as "snake oil". But low-end? No. Easiest way to check this is by running the SoundIDs analysis with the correction curve already applied - and you will see that it will keep applying correction in big amounts.

I've been in love with Microtonic since I'd gotten the PO-32. I really wish it was available for iOS since that's where most of my recent production has been leaning.
Might have to pick up the PO-32 myself, would love to have 'microtonic in a box' for dawless jamming.
@@VenusTheory Pocket Operators can be a bit hit and miss when syncing to other gear (other than other pocket operators), but they are all fun for jamming for sure. Lots of potential for happy accidents. The PO-32 isn't quite as robust as the Microtonic app, but when transferring sounds to it, I generally find them to be close enough.
Totally agree, I'd be all over an IPad version.
side note, what app/apps are you using in ipad? i really loved propellerhead/alihoopa figure before they canned it, great for getting quick ideas down

have you seen that plant synth thing synplant? that thing blew my mind when I saw it. such a cool idea, like properly original and strange concept. like you plant a seed and it grows the plant (sound) hard af to explain google it its interesting af.

DS Thorn is a synth that not many people know but is awesome.
An underrated gem!
With playbeat, the biggest thing I've heard is about it's AI that it learns your tendencies and then can suggest patterns based on that, you don't mention it, but is that something you've explored at all? It was in Computer Music in the May edition I believe, and caught my attention there. Is the AI as good as they say?
I can't say I've really noticed it but I'll give it a 'maybe'. I feel like some of the drum patterns have gotten a little bit more 'right' on the first try but for the most part it still feels fairly random. Not sure how long you need to use it before it is more trained, so YMMV

a little correction here: what youre talking about is a feature that lets you MARK presets that you have saved (patterns/beats) and the algorithm BASES the randomization outcome on those patterns. The more patterns you mark / save into this folder, the better it works. It's one of three types of randomization: The total/general random, the remix one which slightly changes what pattern is already playing, and the smart one, which is the one we're talking about here. It's friggin awesome and such a time saver. No bs, I have no clue why this vst isn't more popular? Love it.
What is a bit frustrating/crappy is that all of those functions are just an icon in the UI, and there is no popup explanation. So you need to read up on what the the arbitrary icons do. But then it's awesome.
What would you recommend as a good starting place for a beginner? I use logic, I really just want to make music that sounds good, songs that I've written, I sing on, etc.
I use SoundId Reference for headphones and monitors since i started using daws for composing and playing. It works very well.
First, when you switch between your headphone and your monitors, you have a much more coherent listening experience.
Also it prevents from changing monitors too soon, as the monitors you own will sound much better.
And over this, if you happen to change your monitors, you will have the best sound from them whatever price they cost.
Soundspot Ravage. Had the lite version first and didn’t like it at all, but the full version is great for creating bass mids for dnb, dubstep etc. Set it up on a parallel channel, turn up the drive, tweak the (pre drive) hpf and Bob’s your uncle. A strong and clean distortion. Even has LFOs - sadly this part of the interface is sluggish
Oh yeah Ravage is pretty nice. I've gotten great results with some settings, but I think I've yet to see all the capabilities. Works nice on pianos to give a gritty ominous sound.
microtonic is absolute killer drummachine. very easy to use and a ton of drumsounds, which even gets crazier the more soundshaping plugins you throw on it. the only issue is the SMALL gui...
Yeah really hoping for a new UI soon that scales to large displays - I have a big 4k display and some of the stuff is really hard to see now haha

uTonic is hands down the best drum synth (2nd runner up is Waldorf Attack ).
Speaking of uTonic I've been trying to bombard them and Novation with requests to port it into Circuit Rhythm ( he did a recode port for The PO32 and it's just a power management chip for a dishwasher lol )

I also love uTonic and Attack. I've been using Attack for like 10 years and it still kills. If you like uTonic have you got a Teenage Engineering PO-32? Now that is a fun combo!

@@Death_By_Media I'm right with you there. While i love the 32 it's also quite frustrating. If they could keep the workflow, increase the size, add multiple outs and maybe a couple more parameters to bring it closer to some of the Elektron machines I think it'd be excellent.

Suppose so but I guess that also requires a DAW/setup that would support that workflow. Not a bad idea - might have to set that up in my Bitwig template!
@@VenusTheory it's pretty simple to setup in BW. Add an FX Channel and set its output to Studio i.e. your monitor outs, then go the Master Channel set it's output to null and then add a Tool device (and call it something useful like Master Grab). On the newly created FX channel, add an Audio Receiver device and set it's input to Master Grab (or whatever you renamed your Tool on the master to). Now move Reference over the to FX channel, after the Audio Receiver and voila, you have a clean Master channel for exports and corrected audio for your monitors. If you add any processing to the Master channel like EQ, compression etc. just make sure that your Master Grab Tool is last in the chain, so that the Audio Receiver is grabbing the processed audio.
@@VenusTheory I was watching Baphometrix series on Clip To Zero and he had a listen bus in Bitwig with a send from the Master track. Called something like [[ Listen ]].
I think I'd use Bitwig if I wasn't addicted to Reaper.

The volca drum is actually quite close to microtonic, maybe not elektron sound, but it's not bad.
@@MaZe6K i have that too. The sound is good, but it is the sequencing that elektron brings to the table and the integration between hardware and software.

It's important to mention that sonarworks reference is way better when measured with their own calibrated microphones
Gullfoss for me, is completely transparent, until I turn it off. . . and the mix suddenly sounds blurry.

keep in mind with reference, it only works in one position, in one room - so eg if you have someone over to listen to your mix and they’re standing next to you, it will sound weird to them.
Mmm not really. The process for scanning the room makes you place the mic in 30 different positions to get an average reading for the whole room
@@ghostplayermusic that's physically impossible, my dude. you can't adjust a single set of speakers to counteract the diverse variety of cancellation and timing issues at all points in a space. for example, say you have a room node that completely cancels out 60Hz at one position, and an antinode that doubles the amplitude of 60Hz at another position - what EQ do you apply to the speakers to even out 60Hz at both positions? you can change the room characteristics, you can add speakers, but EQ or phase correction is not going to cut it. it physically cannot be done, no matter how advanced the technology.
It'd be cool to see some raw/lightly edited footage of you making music. Seeing what others do helps me pick up tricks to use in my own work and know where I can improve.
I know some people struggle to work while the cameras on though, so I understand if that kind of video isn't something you'd do :)
Just recently did a video on retro synth scoring that you might like! Also a few streams now and again on the channel of working on tracks.
Not to mention that Microtonic allows you to export sounds you’ve made to PO-32 Tonic by Teenage Engineering!

Totally apples and oranges - Soothe is actually why I was so skeptical of Gullfoss at first, but the way they approach what they do is completely different. Both are great plugins, but they serve entirely different purposes.
The Gullfoss manual and website have quite a bit of info on what Gullfoss is actually doing (aside the secret sauce of their algorithms) and it's really worth a read if you have some time.
For some reason I thought this was going to be a video about plugins you had recommended and now you wouldn't. 😂
I love µtonic, but I’m curious if you have checked out Drum Spillage 2? It is for me on the same tier as µtonic.
Sadly Mac only - if it ever comes to Windows though I'll be grabbing it immediately. Heard nothing but good things about it!
hey, i sit here in my garage, which opens up to my backyard with a view across the fields, and while i was watching, a thunderstorm slowly built up in the distance and exactly with the last soft stroke of the bass in your video a just as soft thunderstroke came from the outside and fitted in perfectly - yes, i heard the difference in my room, haha - i love moments like that... :-)

Damn, you just crashed my private plugin party. 😄I love all of these. As a slight variation on the Gullfoss tip I'd suggest Voxengo TEOTE. Gullfoss has a tendency to overbroghten in my experience and TEOTE gives you a bit more control.
I use Teote as well and it's way cheaper than Gullfoss
I always pull the frequency range for Gullfoss down so that it doesn't touch the 10-20kHz range, as Gullfoss always likes to boost that an insane amount.
You should definitely check out The God Particle by Jaycen Joshua and Cradle!!!
Just tried the demo. It’s crazy good. I was sceptical, but just adding it without touching a setting somehow worked.

@@VenusTheory They are a serious business, not like Unison Audio lol 😂. I love just putting it on the master at up to 100% but without the limiter section engaged. Never thought I would just put some plugin with 1 knob on my masters and call it a day (OTT style 😂😂😂)
@@VenusTheory definitely agree on the marketing but to me at least it seems like it almost lives up to its crazy level of hype
this is always the issue with emulations imho. A new "simple" emulation comes out that says "mix and get results faster!" only then you still have 200 "hidden" possibilities that the original hardware had not so you end up in the maze of possibilities again. Its a vicious circle
I brought play beat, thinking it was basically a pattern generator for drums….
Forgot I had installed it ..
And then my most over the audio, modern folder, and I saw play beat, so I put it on, and I realised that it had its own sounds drum sequencer, and it blew my mind …
I literally use it all the time now
I like that Gulfoss thing :)
Really great tool to have for sure - if there was ever a 'more good' knob, this is probably as close as you can get.

Lol. Microtonic has been one of my Favorite drum machine since it came out. I have patternarium sessions all the time and do what you do to randomize and adjust / turn off tweak until i get what i want. I then export the midi and edit that too. I dont make sample packs but it does give me excellent electronic patterns to work with for my tracks.
I love Microtonic! Permut8 and Echobode they are the best too! Make a video about them too ,please ✅✅✅
Permut8 is on my list to try when time allows, heard some really good things about it. Haven't checked much into Echobode but I'll note it down!

I was actually considering that as a follow up - my only concern is that many of those plugins are from smaller developers and I don't really want to take a giant shit on small companies.
There have been many cases over the years where a company makes a bad plugin, then comes out with something awesome. I'd sorta be afraid that video would maybe discourage a smaller dev from continuing.
As well, given the amount of content I have planned / work I need to get done, I don't feel as interested in investing the time to make a video on 'this sucks, don't buy it'. Would rather talk about something interesting instead.
@@VenusTheory You could maybe take a middle-ish ground, kind of a fair warning: "this plugin seems promising for __ reason, but bear in mind __. And hopefully these flaws will be fixed soon" Like the synth Octane has nice sounds, but their expansion pack/subscription pricing seems overly confusing (almost deceptively so), but if you know what you're getting, it's fine. That sort of thing.

Infinistrip needs an overall auto gain compensation for the whole chain.
You can add another gain module at the end of the chain if you want and use the auto compensate to fix that!

Microtonic is killer - not sure what black magic they have going on for the envelopes and oscillators and such but man do the drums slap. With a bit of compression and saturation on top you can get some incredibly analog-y drums from it.
@@VenusTheory yes!! all this stuff... AI generated library of timbres... really a hidden gem. It will never be on top... but how it sounds and what a single oscilator is capable of.... I USE IT.... really cool... smart stuff
and YES - try it guys - Microtoniq (make a customized groove out of preset) - SATURATION - abit of Compression... mastering limiter... the THING = IT GIVES SOME HARMONIC INSPIRATION
Im i the only one who finds using rotary knobs with a mouse a nightmare and counter intuitive for a plugin ?
It is an odd design choice sometimes. Luckily most plugin companies let you do up/down motions to move the knob. The few I've found that force a 'rotary' movement with the mouse drive me absolutely fuckin crazy though haha.

I have been using microtonic since it came out! It will always be my go for drums.
Playbeat has proven itself very useful to me. I was initially skeptical; this thing delivers time and again. As an idea generator or a final beatmaker, it does exactly what it says on the tin. Also, plenty of free content (and updates) for it from the developer.

Why/when/where do you use Microtonic vs Playbeat? They seem to cover a lot of the same ground in terms of AI-based pattern generation, although I guess Microtonic is far superior as a drum synth. But like... what does Playbeat do that you can't get from Microtonic/Patternarium, and what causes you to use one or the other in any one moment?

So here's a thing, th VST Acon de-reverberate is cuttingchunks out of my audio, making it a pain when editing my VO work.
I've heard pretty mixed things about that plugin. Almost seems like more of a novel tool than an actual utility.

A plugin is an application that requires host software to use, rather than a standalone application. In the PC world music plugins are typically in the VST or VST3 format, which are .dll or .vst3 files, not .exe files.

It's quite a bit more advanced than that, but more or less yeah it's following a few similar psychoacoustic guides. There's quite a bit more info on what it does and how/why in the manual!
How could you not fall in love with Microtonic in first place?
As mentioned it just seemed a bit basic. In VCV and Voltage Modular I had wired up a lot of similar 'drum synth' patches using the same oscillator/noise structure but Microtonic just made it so much more time efficient.

I played through several 1176 plugins and I couldn’t get into them. Either it took ten minutes before they sounded fine, or I gave up and got a different compressor.
Then I got the Waves CLA-76. Man. I love that thing. After using it twice, it became my new favorite. Unlike the other 1176s I’ve used, CLA-76 just sounds good no matter what, and it’s easy to get a sound that works.
