I remember first time flying on my own in the 70s, the ticket cost around $150 (NL to UK). These days I pay perhaps $250 for the same trip, but I've paid as little as $100 a few times. However: $150 back then is around $550 today. Flying in general has gotten a lot cheaper. And if I pay 70s prices I might just get into business class. So it's not gotten a lot worse. They're cramming more of us in the same plane, but they have passed the savings on to us as well, it seems.
Nice one Andy. I would say the actual flying experience hasn’t got any worse than the old days other than the prices, the extra’s, seat pitch, food, airport security, queuing and delays. 😂 Great little informative video though👍🏻
in the early 60s a first class flight to new york cost around £250-£300 each way so say £500.00 return. in 1960 my dad was earning around £500.00 a year so your whole years wage to buy a flight ticket. if l spent my whole years take home pay on a first class suite on singapore airlines today l would get a lot further than new york and back and probably have a better experience than l would in 1960. it is all relative and first class travel is far more accessible to the working class than it ever was.
Flying used to be cheap a few yes ago fir example retutn Glasgow to Singapore cost £500 now it £1000 plus now economy class sucks majority of airlines want u to upgrade
I welcome the smoking ban but the whole experience is much worse now. I remember flying Britannia, Air 2000 and even a Caledonian L1011 back in the day and the seats were so much more comfortable and spacious than today - comparing that with the 2020's and a 4 hour Jet2 flight is not kind on your backside!
Why the drastic shift you ask, well for me I don't find any part of glamorous, I am 6 feet and I have found the seats so uncomfortable with any hardly legroom, and the food, I don't eat bringing my own food onto the plane, as for the non smoking great hate it, who would truly want to sit in an enclosed tin can filling your lungs with other people's smoke. I think when you are in Economy or coach you sure do know it. To sum up for me, and this is subjective and personal, I find flying tedious and boring, but like any other form of transport is a means to an end that is all, A-B and back again, enjoy my holiday, not the plane.
YES !!, value for money is now a thing of the past - leg room shorter , few reclining seats , having to pay EXTRA to bring a carry-on case - you will own nothing , and STILL be happy
I'm sorry, but I can't seem to find anything remotely "getting worse" about the smoking ban in this video about flying getting worse. Can someone point to me what the point was for adding that segment in the video?
Thanks for watching all, don't forget to hit that LIKE 👍 button too

But business class on continental flights in Europe is generally standard seats with an empty middle seat, so still pretty bad compared to the 70s.
Well done - very enjoyable - thanks
Thank you so much for covering topics that have always peaked my curiosity 😊
Exelant very enjoyable

Nice job, Andy! 💜🇺🇸
Easy answer. Flying anywhere today is horrendous. Give me the comfort of a high speed train any day of the week. Far more comfortable and relaxing.
Pretty hard when you live in New Zealand like me haha
We the consumer wanted 9$ seats.
Then we wanted the same amount of cake as usual.
@MustraOrdo. Andy was making the point it got worse for the smokers when they banned it.
More like it got better 'cause now they have an incentive to stop lol.

Why? Because this industry is doomed and about to contract in less than 10 years, as oil will go more and more scarce.

Worse for people who smoke lol, but there's obvious upsides to the ban, both points are addressed
