- Simulation of FV4101 "Charioteer" tank projectile hitting casemate (front) armor of Jagdtiger tank.
(84mm) 20pdr APDS Mk. 1 (4.5kg, tungsten carbide core - 2.11kg, 40.6mm dia.) at 1270 m/s
vs
250mm RHA at 15 deg. + 15 deg. side angle
20pdr OQF gun muzzle velocity (APDS Mk. 1) - 1325 m/s. 1270 m/s refers to a distance of approximately 0.5km. - Наука та технологія
Is it just me or does this simulation seem particularly smooth with the plate deformation?
Core moves very slowly, so there is a higher fps
Hey we got almost the same pfp, aslo lov ur vids, but i dont know how all of the ppl do the simulation, even trough i tried to search it up myself@@dejmianxyzsimulations4174
It comes as a no surprise
APDS fired from 20 pounder is quite a chunk of steel flying incredibly fast
Maybe it wouldn't deal the most damage inside but it certainly did penetrate
Sometimes perforation is more important than the ultimate damage done inside.
Just might make the crew abandon their vehicle because of the hit to morale.
@@tomppeli. Yeah nobody is sticking around once something enters the tank lol
Not steel tho. Tungsten based ceramics.

@@gargean1671 I am aware but it was just a paraphrase
That 1270 m/s at such an high mass is just predictable flying through that Armor of the jagdtiger
Bro come on you spoiled it
Well, let's hope the driver doesn't panic (abandons the vehicle) and starts reversing to save the MG operator and whoever survived in the superstructure
Or try to turn around under fire exposing the side, like in a story mentioned by Carius.
youre hoping the man doesnt panic when something just ripped through the thickest armour plate of the war?
I mean, the armor of the Jagdtiger is impressive, but this was quite obvious.
Could we please do conqueror vs Object-279 dead centre in the middle of the hull? Would love to see it, keep the sick vids coming.
between upper and lower plates?
i wanna see how well the 17 pdr APDS works against the Tiger II and Jagdtiger’s armor
Damn that was impressive
Is it possible to add some armor like tank tracks or 10mm armor plates welded on with some air in between would that change the outcome or not?
It would, but that would add even more weight into the already heavily stressed engine. At this point, there is no point in adding more armor if it would hurt the tank more than enemy fire.
@@darnit1944 for the simulation!
What type of dmg would this do post penetration? I know it’s still a big hot piece of metal with a bunch of spalling just not sure how the slow speed of everything would affect the dmg
shrapnel
The armor just lightly pooped a slug of hot tungsten into the crew compartment 😂
Still travelling between 100-200 m/s, wouldn't want to be anywhere near the spall/remnants of that round.
I know it might me a little bit boring, but have you considered making a little video, which may explain how ansys and the finite element method can be applied for tasks such as armor penetration and projectile impact simulations. Or just some links to related studies in the description might suffice too.
depends on what you mean, I made a video with the practical use of the program, I also made a video with a more theoretical approach to the topic of armor penetration
@@dejmianxyzsimulations4174 Well. I guess I overlooked this portion of your content. I will look it up and probably try in myself. Sadly SOLIDWORKS doesn't provide such functionality.
My reason for suggesting this is because some many people are oblivious of the FEM, and just write nonsense in the comments.

Now speak after me, german 1943 tank designers:
"Don't"
"Design"
"a flat"
"front"
"Hah look panther Schmalturm goes brrrr"
There was no anti tank gun that can frontally penetrate a Jagdtiger. Most jagdtiger were lost by unreliability rather than enemy attack
I would love to see Yamato main gun vs bob semple front plate please
Can you do m19a1 or m42 duster vs the side of a t55 and t54
what's the flat pen of this round?
is War Thunder's 384mm real? or is it closer to it's previous 285mm?
In the document, the real number is 330mm at 1,000yards & 290mm at 2,000yards (And in the same document, Conqueror 120mm L1 have a penetration of 446mm at 1,000yards & 406mm at 2,000yards). With War Thunder APDS formula, the 20pdr APDS actually should be 399mm at 0 metre. So 384mm at 10 metres is very balanced between real life and War Thunder's game design. It's 285mm was just for old-time balance. Actually, War Thunder Dev Server 1.87 already used the 369mm number at 10 metres (and 17pdr - 271mm, 105 L7 - 373mm, 120 L1 - 477mm), but it didn't come into stable server at that version.
@@Charioteer71 okay, thanks for the info
@@o-hogameplay185 in WT there is a more modern version Mk 3, Mk 1 had about 320 mm of penetration
@@dejmianxyzsimulations4174 oh, i see. i forgot that in game it is the mk3
How slow was the projectile at the end?
at the end you have velocity scale, something like 100-200 m/s
I'll check it out by the way
How about IS-3 turret?
assuming it hits a very small area of flat armor?

@@dejmianxyzsimulations4174if so, that's around the same thickness as the Jagtigers super structure.
Is it possible to do a simulation of Ukranian Nozh ERA? A very cool type of era
only by bypassing the simulation of HEAT warheads. Simulating one, releasing the equivalent of a jet in the target simulation.
armor looks like butter compared to the projectile
Hell yeah.
It seems like the 20 pounder just *barely* penetrated. Is it possible to weld a 10mm or 20mm plate to help block the round?
Yes but it would add even more weight to the already overweight tank. I think the weight alone would kill the tank faster than enemy fire.

yellow loader, tank is fine
If germans had that plate much more angled like wtf why they had tank designs
like this, maybe for more room? More ammunition? Even though this is a much newer round for a ww2 tank and well this tank would stop many ww2 projectiles effectively, it is still lots of steel put into it for a flat plate with tons of weight.
More room because the Gun on the Jagdtiger was an absolute monster which correct me if i'm wrong, it had 2 pieces of ammunition, the charge and the penetrator so yeah, a lot of room just for the gun and time production reduction, yes, making angled armor takes a lot more time to weld
One of the reasons is joining plate perpendicularly will result in a much stronger weld. While the other joining angle will result in lower resistance.
We now know it is not true with good welding, especially the care German put into their welding. But it is definitely part of the reason why German retaining the "boxy" shape.
From an engineering perspective making a highly angled plate that needs to have a gun mantlet in it is a lot more difficult than a flat one. There is also indeed the issue of space, the jagtiger contained an absolutely colossal 128mm gun and it took up a lot of space.
Also, there are cases where using a flat plate can actually save weight, because while the thickness needs to be greater to achieve the same protection, the area can be less.
Man this shot was hard to hit , especially early APDS . No gun back then could pen this , the huge front plate had more angle . Shooting tiny weak pots was not a thing in 1944 . 😅
@@5co756 The superstructure of the jagtiger is not a small target. And the soviet 122mm, long 88, the super pershing's 90mm, and of course the Jagtiger's own 128mm gun, could all penetrate over 200mms of armor.

Would be nice to see the 7,5 cm K. Gr. Rot Pz fired at 650 m/s from the FK 16 n.A. L/36 or the 10,5 cm Pzgr. 14 kg 405 m/s or 480 m/s (LeFH 16 L/22 or 18 L/28) or the 10,5 cm Pzgr. Rot at 390 m/s or 470 m/s (again LeFH 16 or 18) against the B1 Bis. These guns were the main go to as AT equipment in the French campain in WW2. (Appart from the 7,5 cm L/24 or 88mm gun).
Artillery is unfair and broken.
In-game the ap is 245-257mm of pen? And the apds is 350 or something close to that. It is very hard to kill enemy tanks though as the gunner somehow always takes out the paper chassis/turret armour on the speedy thing
