  • My Oswald Strat has finally arrived! I’m genuinely thrilled with it. Easily the best Strat I’ve ever played. So alive and ready to rich sounding. Hope you enjoy the video!

As you know I was at Nick Oswalds little factory in my Holidays in Netherlands. I saw your Guitar ( almost finished, not aged) and some others. I was wondering I didn't see bodies and Necks. I just saw raw wood. Every - yes EVERY - Guitar he is creating he does from scratch. That is so much cutting , sawing and sanding ( is that right english ?) you can't imagine. And it's always him alone. ALONE ! So I understood that he needs so much time to finish a Guitar. And he is such a nice man... So I decided to visit him again next year and asking if he would build my dream Stratocaster. But first : Concratulations Paul to this unique piece of Art. You are a lucky man !

Nick does indeed make beautiful guitars, and they are works of art as well as being a very functional tool. I love ❤ mine, and looking forward in receiving my number 2 from.him next year around March

This is one of the best looking and sounding guitars/ strats I’ve ever seen. The sound reminds me of that video of Peter Green playing ‘’Need Your Love So Bad’’ on his 50s Stratocaster. Such beautiful woody tone.

So pleased for you Paul! That looks and sounds great!! The fundamental note is really strong and alive and I believe it is due to those baseplates. I have one on the bridge of my Strat for that reason. Having a guitar built can be a gamble but it looks like you hit jackpot! Enjoy mate!! A fun time ahead. 😍😍

Thanks again Paul for your fantastic and inspiring videos. My Oswald Strat should be reaching me next week. I ordered it in July 2022. it’s now February 2023. When I was filling out the specs, I requested a one piece Swamp Ash body, Tobacco burst with a „Paul Stafford Cook“ Relic finish, baked maple neck with a SRV neck profile, stainless steel medium jumbo frets and naturally it’s a Hard tail. Can’t wait to play this Guitar and if your video is anything to go by, I know I won’t be disappointed.

Congratulations Paul on receiving your much awaited hand built instrument.I think that you will probably understand just exactly what i mean when i try to explain to people that there is a big difference in the overall feel and playability of a hand made guitar ,as opposed to a factory built guitar. It feels so comfortable and natural , to degree where it can even improve your playing .At least it does for me.Regarding your choice of neck maple verses rosewood fingerboards. There is a really good post about this on youtube somewhere where a strat is recorded playing the same piece of music , first playing with the solid maple neck fitted and secondly with the maple with a rosewood fingerboard on and there is a definite difference between them.Considering that its the same guitar played with both necks on and with the same amp settings then any difference to the sound must be due to the wood itself ,after all when we play guitar we are pressing the strings down on to a wooden surface in different ways to achieve various accents .This has an effect on the overall vibrations transmitted from the strings down down the neck to the bridge ,so the wood material plays a big part in the type of sound your strings make .The maple neck has a softer and cleaner sound and the rosewood has a little more bite and a bit more attitude. Some people may not hear it but it`s definitely there if you listen. Enjoy your very special strat mate . ATB

Hello pal, fantastic video, the new one is tremendous, what a great range of tones, wish you all the best to play it for years to come. I was getting ready for bed the other night when the missus said, " you look as if you've put weight on recently ", I said " don't think so eh !, but why would you say that ?", she says "when you stand naked and side on, you look like the letter Q. The wood grain of Swamp Ash is simply beautiful, as is your example.
Personally, I really love the worn and bare Ash that takes on an oxidized gray appearance.
I'm currently building a '60s spec Strat using a single piece Swamp Ash body with similar grain pattern(s).
Congrats, great example of a Stratocaster.

Paul I have always enjoyed your videos and in this one your smile is like that of a wee boy on xmas morning. Today I sent Nick my 50% deposit for the telecaster build of my dreams. The same tele if I went the ( ridiculously overpriced ) fender custom shop route would set me back £4k + easily. Im opting for light weigh swamp ash body, 3 tone sunburst, custom spaced control panel, quartersawn maple neck with dark rosewood fretboard , stainless steel frets and carbon truss rod, 50s wiring and custom made tusq button string guide for the headstock. All hardware except pickups is Gotoh Vintage style. Im not a fan of relic'ing bodies and Nick is applying the nitro so it sinks into the grain and has a matt hue like ive owned it for years and it looks NOS worn in. Like they say Nick listens to what you ask and everything is possible. I expressed my concerns about tacky and gummy nitro finished necks and Nick assures me his finishing procedures completely negate that concern. Onto your Oswald strat Paul, is it still putting that xmas day smile on your face when you pick it up to play ? I gotta say the tones in your video show that guitar to be truly a live one. I agree with your trem opinion btw, hardtail every time, simplest is best way to go and I wouldnt own a strat with any kind of trem myself.

Congrats on the new guitar! I know you've been waiting for this one for a while. I am so happy and excited for you! I know the feeling....(receiving something nice after the wait...especially if it has to do with guitars) The swamp ash is the best I've seen and I really love the way they did the wear "where'" the arm rests. You called it a tiger eye. I see what you mean. It really is unique and I have never seen anything like it. To me...that in itself really makes this a one of a kind. Beautiful! I love it! About the "U" shape neck, I've found that every one of my guitars that has a significantly thicker neck seems to have "That Sound" I'm looking for.
Maybe it is just by chance or possibly the neck thickness can make a difference, all I know is that unconsciously all the guitars I've kept have the thicker neck profiles.

    • @stevest3v3
      @stevest3v3 2 роки тому

You are right! .....but I've just bought an expensive guitar & it came with a slim neck rather than thick neck it normally comes with. It's a great but i'm left with the feeling the thick neck would sound even better!

    • @pharmerdavid1432

Jimmy Page's #1 '59 Les Paul has a very thin neck, and a luthier (I forget the name, or would post a link) who had it in to service said the thin neck gave it a special sound, which the thicker necked '59 Les Paul's didn't have. The thin neck vibrated in a way that gave it a "special" sound. Just saying.......

I've been having a retrospective deep dive though your channel this week and its been a delight to re-watch so many great videos. I've owned my Strat since new for the last 43 years and I'm a maple neck fan too. Mine has darkened significantly to a very similar hue as the headstock on yours. It also has a fairly hefty neck too but a 7.25" radius board. I block off the trem, always have.

Wow that looks beautiful Paul! I know some people don't like relic guitars but as you said, it's a work of art and a real skill to get it looking like that. It's sounds lovely and bright. I don't use a tremolo so keep mine in the case as it does tend to get in the way! Thanks for this great video. 🎸👍

Beautiful looking & sounding guitar. The grain & aging on the forearm area looks stunning like a breaking wave in the moonlight.........wonderful for some surf music!
