She might have been trying to say the dad was a good guy not someone who should be blamed for being alive. It’s hard to judge Sarah without knowing what story she was told. Ultimately this is all on the dad and nobody else.

How can someone go YEARS of major holidays and birthdays without trying to invite the older child? like... sure I get maybe its very awkward to bring up but wouldn't you expect to "hear" about the other kid, see them do phone calls, or have a conversation about child support or gifts for that other kid even if you lived like states away (which wasn't their case since an UBER was an option to go home) Sounds like either he fully HID the fact he had another kid for a while or step mom was putting on an act for the kids that are finally at the age of asking questions.
