This was really interesting! I don’t really use colored pencils, but I’ve heard the same tip about good paper from watercolor artists. It sounds like paper is a pretty big deal regardless of the medium - who knew?
With watercolor it is even more dramatic I think. Imagine watercolor on printer paper... :O like we learn in germany in school.... -.- No wonder everyone as a child think they can't do anything with art when you paint in school on printer paper with the cheapest kind of "water color" (or whatever this is... ^^) I dont know how art lessons in school in other countries are so I can only talk about my experience as a child. And no one ever talked with us about it that we use it kind of "wrong"...
@@kaudiousi6278 art classes in American schools are similar. I don’t ever remember using real watercolor paper, and color mixing or other techniques were barely covered. It may have been different in high school, but by then, I was convinced I couldn’t do art, so signed up for chorus and theater instead.
@@kaudiousi6278 I don't know if it is the same in all schools, but in Pakistan the private school I went to, had us use multimedia paper along with expensive water colour (from companies like Lefranc and Bourgeois).
I'm still very much a beginner and I can't afford the more expensive colours; so for me I think what was most helpful is starting with black and white graphite drawings and improving my skills first.. thus when I first tried coloured pencils even though it was a cheap 12 colours set I was very happy with the results and it helped me to keep going!!
Literally everything Temi said in this video is true especially the first one, thank u for making this video for beginners like me and congratulations on hitting 100k +!
What makes your tips even more valuable and useful for me is your practicality. It's not only about how much effort and long days and hours you put into the drawing, but it's about the most practical and efficient approach to the process! I'm so grateful I found you 🥰
I've just dusted off my coloured pencils and drawing materials from around 13 years ago, and your videos have been so helpful in getting me inspired again! I forgot how enjoyable colouring is and this video will be great for improving my technique. Thank you so much Temi!
I'd just finished my color pencil artwork last night and unconsciously doing some of the tips you gave right now. Watching this I feel like saying "ohh see I am rigt in doing layering and stuff" not bragging tho am just surprised of myself XD
1. keep your pencils sharp, makes blending easier 2. Work in light layers 3. Find the right paper (personal preference) Paper surface, paper needs tooth, but not too much. 4. Don’t be scared of not picking the right colors. You can mix the colors!! Start with a small set of colored pencils 5. Mixed media helps you immensely *use markers, pastels etc.
1. If you are afraid of picking the right color, you can always try it on another swatch of paper. You can call this a "study." Sometimes when I do colored pencils, I use a piece of paper that is a little bigger than my planned finish piece, and I draw light borders around it to know where to cut. The outside of the borders become my study area, where I blend colors and see if they would work, before I try it on the piece itself. 2. Don't touch the paper with your bare hands (if you can). Especially the Prismacolor reds. Those reds go everywhere!! If you're using a table easel like I am, you can use a wooden T-square or a wooden dowel to rest your arm on so you don't end up smudging your work. And if you need to remove residue on your work, blow lightly or use a makeup brush. 3. Not necessarily a CP artist thing, but just for artists in general. Don't price your work too low. Colored pencil works tend to be more laborious than paint anyways, and lowering your prices give the impression that you didn't use good quality materials. There will always be people saying your work is too expensive, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to please them. 4. I don't draw straight into my colored pencil paper. Those are expensive, and I tend to scrap off my first draft anyway. I use cheap printer paper to draft out my work, then trace my final draft onto my final paper using a lightbox.
Another video thank you so much! I stopped art a few months ago because I felt as I wasn't progressing and watching you made me want to start doing art again.
I love all these tips, but the one that stood out to me most was the one about finding the right paper. When I first started doing colored pencil art, I thought bristol paper was the best paper to use because it was a bit thick and smooth, but the more I used it, the more I realized that I hated it. I didn't like how my drawings looked on it. I feel like it takes longer to blend the colors to get a smooth look on it. But then I noticed some art UA-camrs using toned gray paper and decided to give that a try. I LOVE toned gray paper now. I love how my drawings come out on it. Finding the right paper is very important.
1:53 this is so true! Good paper is more important than pencils. (The same applies to water colours and many other art medium too) This is why I say to beginners that buy good paper, practice techniques and when you’re comfortable with your skills and feel the art medium ”right for you” THEN think about investing in high quality pens/ink/paint. I’ve made mistake in past that I bough immediately high quality art supplies and after few tries I realised that the medium wasn’t my cup of tea. So yeah, don’t make my mistake. It’s ok to start off with cheaper and build your technique with them before upgrading

I agree with your opinion about paper. I would just add that you can get an entire ream of vellum finish card stock for the price of a good small sketchbook. It’s smooth enough for blending but has the same tooth as vellum finish Bristol board. I really wish I had known that many Bristol pads ago.

Can I add a comment. When layering always go from light shade through to dark. That way if you have a big set with many shades you can gradually build up depth. If you put a white down first it will shine through the colour on top of it and be more luminous. White does not lighten. On top of colour. literally all the things you mentioned are the things I wish I knew when starting with colored pencils. I remember this one time I had my colored pencils in school (I believe it was a small pack of Prismacolors), and I had a project to do. The paper was so BAD, I had to grab my own paper. So yeah, paper matters. Keep up the great work, you are amazing!

I just found your channel and I had to subscribe to your channel. I color a lot. Coloring is something I enjoy doing. As much as drawing. Great video y the way. I might learn a new technique or two.
I was surprised to find some actual good tips from a video that's less than five minutes. 😁 I like how you mention the "tooth" of the paper. Paper is very important. It comes in different weights and smoothness, and it's just really fun to find different types.
