  • When grey seal Pippi Longstocking arrived at our Animal Care and Rescue Center in February-separated from her mother too early, unable to eat on her own and weighing only a fraction of the average weight for a seal her age-we had no idea that her rehabilitation would be one of the most intense in the history of National Aquarium Animal Rescue.
As Pippi began to recover from her initial medical issues, a troublesome ear infection presented a new array of complicated problems. Our Animal Health and Rescue teams were quick to begin treatment for her infection, but the challenges continued: The surgery that was necessary to save Pippi’s health had never been performed on a grey seal, meaning there was no longer a guidebook for standard recovery.
But Pippi-and our team-persevered. One month after the successful completion of her treatment and her return to the ocean, we’re looking back at the progress she made during her time with us.
