No it's not a bad animal. Apparently it can be concerned for other's wellbeing. While their normal range is in the Antarctic waters and as far north as the sub-Antarctic islands, it's not uncommon for lone individuals to venture further north and visit Tasmania and New Zealand. Usually a couple of times a year, there's sightings of them resting for a few days on beaches in southern Tasmania where they'll linger a while and then return out to sea again. While I'm yet to encounter one yet, the photos of them sure look intimidating and are often accompanied by notices from the Parks & Wildlife Service to give them space and spectate from a safe distance. There's the skull of one on display in Launceston's Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery (Inveresk) which I've seen up close in person and can say that it's basically a Grisly Bear in a seal costume. The jaw alone could easily swallow a human head, and the massive muscle attachments at the back of the skull are no pushover either. Beautiful and awesome animals that definitely deserve respect.

When I was little I wanted the leopard seals to cath the penguins in happy feet because I felt bad they weren't getting any food and my mum taught me the circle of life
I remember one of my first memories was of an episode of Pingu where a Leopard Seal was stalking Pingu. It scared the shit out of me! Considering i was about 2 or 3 years old. So I've always had a general dislike/fear of leopard seals. But I must admit, they're awesome creatures, perfectly adapted for their environment.
Danielle really allowed me to get into the spirit of a leopard seal. Her attention to detail with her wardrobe choice, along with her sleeve placement really drove the point home. All of this while packaged in to an easily digestible short yet fun video! Will watch again 😅😅😅😅😅
I legitimately had a reoccurring nightmare about giant-eyed leopard seals that ate people. This was when I was younger. Now I think they’re awesome, and still terrifying.

I remember seeing a video of a leopard seal beg for a fish from some fishermen on the dock. They gave the seal a fish and he swam away a very happy boi.
I was a leopard seal for 8 years. How I ended up at at this military base in Nevada is beyond me, but at least I can type and have all the fish I can eat.
What I love most about Leopard Seals is the largest pinniped that still looks the way you think a seal looks like. But conversely I also love their top facing nostrils that makes them look somehow more fearsome
They're regulary seen in New Zealand despite it not getting all that cold. They suntan on beaches and even piers around boats and people. That one well known video filmed here is of a Leopard Seal attacking a car.
Yeah they creep me out. I think because they don't look very.. mammalian to me? Don't know how most comments find them cute haha they look like bull terrier crocodiles
I've seen leopard seals resting in the harbour near where I live. Happens every so often all along the coast. You know one is around because of all the lost cat posters.
@@porschecollector727 My guess? House cats on the roam walk up to them to see what they are, poke them with a paw and then *SNAP* as the seal bites and then eats them. When I was little I wanted the leopard seals to cath the penguins in happy feet because I felt bad they weren't getting any food and my mum taught me the circle of life
nooo😢😂
so educated
agree 💯
I remember one of my first memories was of an episode of Pingu where a Leopard Seal was stalking Pingu. It scared the shit out of me! Considering i was about 2 or 3 years old.
So I've always had a general dislike/fear of leopard seals. But I must admit, they're awesome creatures, perfectly adapted for their environment.
I think we all were thinking about that seal
1:12 that seal was adorable I don't care how people slander them
They're adorable right up until they smile at you 😈 😐
And this is why, kids, you never go near a loose seal, you might lose a hand
Danielle really allowed me to get into the spirit of a leopard seal. Her attention to detail with her wardrobe choice, along with her sleeve placement really drove the point home. All of this while packaged in to an easily digestible short yet fun video! Will watch again 😅😅😅😅😅
I legitimately had a reoccurring nightmare about giant-eyed leopard seals that ate people. This was when I was younger. Now I think they’re awesome, and still terrifying.
The adult at 8:05 is like: “What are you supposed to be?”
Food
These things both fascinate and scare the piss out of me😂 glad I came across this video because I know I’m not alone in my irrational fear of them though my chances of seeing one in person are so very slim😂
An animal that can be so beautiful and so terrifying at the same time. They always have that sort of a "grim smile"
Their ability to carry walruses up a tree is amazing
Mother Nature trying to trick us with the cuteness...
Danielle Dufault is only getting better and better at hosting Animalogic. Dylan and Andrew, you seriously struck gold when you hired this amazing host. keep up the great work Danielle, the absolute passion you have for science education and exploration of the natural world is very evident. I cant wait to watch the next one.
6:37 and 8:23 small correction. On this two tiny clips these were no leopard seals but weddell seals instead. Recognizable due to their small head to body ratio compared to leopard seals, also especially their smaller jaw.
How about the kangaroo mouse for the next animal? They are small vicious predators that howl like a wolf during a full moon.
This was so amazing to watch!! Your footage is ALWAYS stunning and I have loved learning more about these amazing, terrifying creatures. :D
Now I can't help but ask for a video about snow leopards!! Pretty please? 🙏🏻
The thumbnail is pretty accurate
Btw a cute smile. Now I know why penguins stare him on ice when they Got save
I remember seeing a video of a leopard seal beg for a fish from some fishermen on the dock.
They gave the seal a fish and he swam away a very happy boi.
wait they're NINE FEET LONG?!?! Holy moly
One of my favorite animals. They're absolutely incredible specimens.
Great video, I never knew about the krill feeding, always thought pingu was on the menu with fish so thanks for educating ✌️
It's pretty funny to imagine the ferocious leopard seal filter feeding on tiny krill like the gentlest of ocean creatures, the humpback whale.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
I was a leopard seal for 8 years. How I ended up at at this military base in Nevada is beyond me, but at least I can type and have all the fish I can eat.
Sea doggo they said , cute and adorable they said .
What I love most about Leopard Seals is the largest pinniped that still looks the way you think a seal looks like. But conversely I also love their top facing nostrils that makes them look somehow more fearsome
So cute when dry and NOT in the water
Almost hard to imagine they are killers
especially with their babies ^-^
They're regulary seen in New Zealand despite it not getting all that cold. They suntan on beaches and even piers around boats and people. That one well known video filmed here is of a Leopard Seal attacking a car.
Wasn’t that an elephant seal attacking a car?
@@steelersguy74 Yeah my bad. Although both are huge and wanna stay away from lol
It's amazing how they move under water. I never saw any spezies moving so smooth in every direction.
Man those two pinguins running away was too cute
Leopard seals are incredible animals
Scary animal! Never heard of them til this. Will forever remember those poor penguins scurrying away!
I love this show. Thank you for sharing your talent Danielle!
Ah yes, the psychotic water sausages.
They seem pretty chill once you get to know them.
Genuinely these things terrify me at the level of crocodiles
Yeah they creep me out. I think because they don't look very.. mammalian to me? Don't know how most comments find them cute haha they look like bull terrier crocodiles
I've seen leopard seals resting in the harbour near where I live. Happens every so often all along the coast. You know one is around because of all the lost cat posters.
They hunt cats? How does that happen?
@@porschecollector727 My guess? House cats on the roam walk up to them to see what they are, poke them with a paw and then *SNAP* as the seal bites and then eats them. Domestic cats often don't know when they should be afraid because they think of themselves as predator not prey despite their small stature.
