As this is a re-post, I feel obligated to re-post my two cents as to how Infinite could have been handled better. Everything in Sonic Forces proceeds as normal until Gadget's fight with Infinite in Metropolis, when the ProtoRuby activates it appears to have some effect on Infinite's mind. After he is beaten, he starts raving about how reality is his to choose, and yet he had no choice. Once he is beaten for the last time, he reveals what happened there; the Phantom Ruby cast an illusion over Zero the Jackal that his squad was wiped by Shadow and he turned to Eggman to get even. In reality, Eggman noticed using the Phantom Ruby degraded his mind with every use; as such he used Infinite as a guinea pig to see if the degradation could be controlled. With the true reality revealed, Zero plunges his hand into his chest to tear out the Phantom Ruby and give it to Gadget; pleading with his to destroy Eggman and to ensure there will never be another Infinite.
