Tweaking, altering, upgrading, to try and make your car the fastest, quickest, and best handling car on the track. Their dedication is amazing. As is their talents for driving these machines. 1976 Aberaz Slot car club Port Elizabeth First Grand Prix week long meeting. Young and old members of clubs accross the entire country. Almost all home built 1/32 Mabuci and Pitman powered custom chassis Fabulous 8 lane 250 foot track (wood and copper tape) Classes GT, Saloon and GPi used My Lola T70, My Galaxie 500 and my Lancia Ferrari. Fabulous times! Many, many hours building, testing and showing off. Our club was the Le Mans Petit MRC in Bloemfontein. Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories!!! My brother and i wer lucky enough to have one othe first Sets my dad imported fom Gamages England The Airfix with a f1 Lotus, Cooper, Ferrari ans Porche.
In the late 70’s my dad got me all excited when revealing he was taking me to a slot car racing club. When we got to the location where he thought it was, we couldn’t find it so we went home. As a 10 year old I was gutted. I can’t imagine my joy had I got to experience that night.
It was my first session so, I felt the need to chat through it as it's important to give people the context in how much effort goes into it. Next one, racing will be 💯 sooner 😉
Definitely earned a subscriber here. I have mentioned before that I grew up in the 70's and I absolutely loved Hot Wheels and Matchbox Die-Cast cars. I remember racing them on our coffee table. Then I discovered TYCO/AFX Slot-Cars. They were smaller in scale, but still a lot of fun. Plus they had movie inspired cars and tracks. The Dukes of Hazzard was one, and Smokey and the Bandit was another. Boy I'll never forget when I finally was able to get those cars and even trucks. They were a blast. And I loved them. They had some really cool ideas later on with an "Off-Road" track with jeeps and 4x4 trucks, then later they made a construction set. A two lane set with assorted vehicles. I can't remember exactly what was included with it, but the mid 70's to early 80's for me was a Tyco/AFX dream come true!

Heck, today you can get everything from the cars from Fast and Furious, James Bond, Batman & Joker, Sonic, Cars (the movie from Pixar), Disney, Mario kart, Paw Patrol, various Hot Wheels classics, Build'n'Race (where you can use LEGO and similar bricks to build your car) - it all depends on economy and how much space you have available! It can be great fun, I bought three small used racetracks for one of my stephsons that we combined with the huge track his father bought for him - he got to Race Yoshi from the Mario Universe, and I was racing the Green Ford Mustang from Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift! Good fun across ages...😁

Did this around 40 years ago outside with 6 lanes. Circuit was probably about 2/3 of the size of this one. When the dew came down on the track it was quicker to run treaded tyres.
I stumbled across this video and it took me back to the days (the late 60'searly 70's) when I raced slot cars. Without denigrating todays racers, things seemed more sophisticated / involved back them. Chassis were soldered and hand made from brass and piano wire. The engines were fitted at an angle and drove an angled drive gear. The best motors were made by Champion and Miura. In fact, there was a whole industry supplying tyres, electrical components and a host of other supplies. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else raced in those days and how they think todays scene compares.

Love this but does anyone else remember the (I think) one time Blue Peter presenter Christopher Trace who did a slot (excuse the pun) on the show (again I think it was Blue Peter) where after each Grand Prix he and his co-presenter (John Noakes) did a rerun of the race in the studio using Scalextric! I'm 70 now but I'm sure I haven't imagined it😉👍???

What a fantastic video and event! Im so glad the UA-cam algorithm decided I might want to view it. I have so many questions. What was the average lap time for each class? How many laps were completed in total and for each class? How many entrants were there for each class? What was the actual speed recorded down Mulsanne and what does that translate to in scale speed? Do the car body shapes and aero actually play a role in handling, downforce and top speed? Were the motors tuned to ensure LMP1 were the fastest, LMP2 second fastest and so on? How did these teams approach tuning theur cars for 24 hours of racing? What were the advantages of running a harder tyre versus a softer tyre requiring more pitstops for replacement? How many motors did each car go through, and were they allowed to run strengthened internals or were sealed units required? Basically, what a fantastic event, lots of hard work by a lot pf people, and my thanks to you for covering it. The enthusiasm is obvious to see. 👍
I know a guy, who during a practice round before the big race, back in the mid 80's on the Mulsanne Straight proved that cars can be excellent at flying (although not great at changing direction when airborne and the landing can be a bit rough on them), when he at 300 Km/h got airborne in his Sauber Mercedes C8 - during the 320 meter flight, he also completed two perfect somersaults before landing on the wheels again, unharmed - unfortunately the landing damaged the cars so much that it couldn't be ready for start!
@@trackfanstv It might be hard to replicate the chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight with slot cars, IDK, and of course, without them it's still the old track - so if it's the 1980's look they're going for, then it's fine!

Hi bud, you're right, they're 1/32 scale and the track is Ninco (digital), also they don't make it anymore but a lot of clubs use it and maintain it. For those that can't maintain their Ninco, they're moving over to the Policar track as it has a similar, rough surface to it 👌🏻. Thanks for watching, most appreciated.

Isn’t there just one gun (/controller thing) for each slot on the track? How do you have more cars racing than there are slots? (Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just have zero experience with these things since playing with a little 2-car setup as a kid haha)
No pal, it's a common question, the track is a digital set up and each of the cars has a digital sensor within them that the driver controls with a hand controller (Slot.it SCP-2) from the podium. As the car approaches the piece of track that have a cross in them the driver hits a button on their controllers which sends a signal to the car which in turn signals to the track to move a small paddle (like a train set) to change the car into the next lane as it drives over it. The type of track they use is digital do, you can use multiple cars on any lane and there are bits if track that have crossovers on them allowing you to press a button on your hand controller and then switch lane. For those who find even throttle management too challenging i recommend tamiya mini4wd races. You don’t even need to look after starting the car and enjoy either a real hobby or just read a book, watch TV, do some laundry, clean the cat sh1tter… anything you want..

I have no idea what scale ( looks to me to be 1/32) these are, but from my 1/32, 1/24, 14x, 20 class days (i mean no offence) are slower than the 1/64 ho t jet slot cars. Its very cool but just too slow for me. Enjoy my friends.

@@trackfanstv how about I mix it with monza oval but with 6 bankings and a dual pit lane on the beginning of the vintage monza straight before the 6 bankings. And yes the 6 bankings are connected to each other.

Isn’t there just one gun (/controller thing) for each slot on the track? How do you have more cars racing than there are slots?
(Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just have zero experience with these things since playing with a little 2-car setup as a kid haha)
No pal, it's a common question, the track is a digital set up and each of the cars has a digital sensor within them that the driver controls with a hand controller (Slot.it SCP-2) from the podium. As the car approaches the piece of track that have a cross in them the driver hits a button on their controllers which sends a signal to the car which in turn signals to the track to move a small paddle (like a train set) to change the car into the next lane as it drives over it. The type of track they use is digital do, you can use multiple cars on any lane and there are bits if track that have crossovers on them allowing you to press a button on your hand controller and then switch lane. @@trackfanstv Yes it does thanks because with luck you had also recorded a car did change lanes in the view of camera. I seen these countless videos of cars running on same track but no one seemed to want to explain how they swapped from one slot to another mid race. Thanks bud.

For those who find even throttle management too challenging i recommend tamiya mini4wd races. You don’t even need to look after starting the car and enjoy either a real hobby or just read a book, watch TV, do some laundry, clean the cat sh1tter… anything you want..

I have no idea what scale ( looks to me to be 1/32) these are, but from my 1/32, 1/24, 14x, 20 class days (i mean no offence) are slower than the 1/64 ho t jet slot cars. Its very cool but just too slow for me. Enjoy my friends.

@@trackfanstv how about I mix it with monza oval but with 6 bankings and a dual pit lane on the beginning of the vintage monza straight before the 6 bankings. And yes the 6 bankings are connected to each other.
