Mom passed on aug 25, 2022, in our home, and dad was by her side. I saw her take her final breath. This song has a deeper meaning for me now. She lost to breast cancer.
This song reminds me of my late dad so much. He passed away two years ago from Crohn's disease and other health issues. He was in the hospital for around four months before he took his final breath, but since covid was rampant back then, we couldn't visit him. His funeral was held two days after he passed away but i didn't attend. My mental health was already on thin ice before the we received the terrible news so my family decided that it'd be better for me not to attend, but they said i could if i wanted to, yet i didn't. I hate myself for that moment of weakness. I couldn't say my final goodbye to him. Since he passed away i rarely visited his grave, i just couldn't. I'd start hyperventilating and having a panic attack. Two and a half weeks ago i moved abroad, 1200 km away to be exact and i didn't visit his grave even though I planned that for months if i were to ever move away, but when it actually came to me moving, it literally happened from one day to the other. The lines: "Someday I’ll bе overcast, but you won't have to cry ’Cause wе'll do the grieving, while I'm by your side" remind me so much of him. This is something that he would've said. While in the shorter one the meaning is more ambiguous and the vers "I'm so scared of getting used to this, all the vines that keep you tethered in your room." could hint at Xayah being depressed after Rakan died and that she's not going outside much anymore, with the context of the longer version, I feel like it's more fitting to think of a sick person and the vines being somewhat literal in the form of IVs/medical equipment that keep the person inside. Also this version seems to make it pretty clear that the person died from an illness. That being said, I love both versions in their own right and both have had me in tears. I love how just a few extra lines and a bit of a shuffled order can change the meaning of the song so drastically. Well at least that's my interpretation of it.
