S4.41 We Are Losing Our Lift - There's No Time To Waste
Вставка

- We are out of time. The roofers are done and taking their lift away, so we have three days to finish the facia and the east gable window. The heat has taken its toll but there's no time to waste.
This once abandoned Victorian mansion is undergoing a massive restoration. Designed by noted architect Nicholas Clayton, this Galveston historical treasure is slowly back to life. Restoration of this historic house is not easy, and the extensive yard and gardens add to the complexity and expense. Preservation of the original features is high on the priority list. Follow the journey from start to finish. It’s a tough, hot, sweaty, and very expensive road but worth every minute of it.
The League-Kempner House is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to saving this magnificent house.
The house needs your help to survive. You can donate on our website: www.leaguekemp...

Special Thanks to all the Volunteers today. I know so many of them come from various backgrounds and all walks of life bringing much needed skills to this amazing project.
We are very blessed to have such dedicated help. It also makes the work so much more fun.
Seeing all the collaboration is so awesome. For such painstaking work that it can be a lot of the time, this kind of camaraderie is the cool needed in the midst of the heat and hard work. For the big things like the windows and credible aesthetic things like the artwork and emulated stained glass on the doors. More than fun, it really does help passers by and potential visitors to take it more seriously. That it’s a fun experience just adds to the progress.
And the almost finished product that is the prominent facia windowsill is giving wedding cake. Amazing feat.
From the comments we get from people who have toured, they like getting a glimpse of what is used to look like. We see the same thing at other historical sites. It helps with the experience (and it is fun).
Phew!! Incredible accomplishment. You need a break from this strenuous work in the heat.👍👏🍾
Beryl forced us to take a break but it wasn't very fun.😜 Jo and I both got covid so we spent three weeks inside in the air conditioning.
@@leaguekempnerhouse That wasn't the kind of break I was hoping for. But most importantly, I wish you both full recoveries, and hopefully a little less pressure with the both the roof and basement 'groundwork' accomplished!
I'm glad you got a few extra days with the lift. I'm not going to lie, hanging out that window to finish 😱 When they come back for the vents and gutters they will probably have the lift again for you to use. It looks really good so far. Have a great week.❤️🤍💙
They are bringing the lift back to do the gutters and caps but they are trying to get everything done in one day to minimize the rental charge. It may be that I have access to it for a few hours so I'll be ready to take advantage of that if it happens.
I think you should try to get a lift,or rental co. to keep a lift there all the time for you guys. It could be great advertising for them😊
We reached out but got no reply. It will be a while before we do any more work like this so we will try again when the time comes. All the windows could use a good scraping and the shutters need to come down and be redone not to mention all the area under the eaves.
I have an idea for a fundraiser. Get 3 firetrucks, inexpensive on each corner with the lifts fully extended. Play some good music and have girls dancing in them wearing fishnet hose with diamonds.
I’ll bring you some clean cat litter buckets next time I’m in Galveston
That would be great. They are so handy.
That would be great. They are so handy.
It's coming along really well. I came by last week and saw it in person. Maybe I'll have time to tour in December if I'm able to come for Dickens. Keep on keeping on ❤
Dickens would be a fun time to come tour. The house will be decorated for Christmas and it definitely won't be so hot inside the house. We would love to show you the house in person.
Oh no the pencil ghost!
It wouldn't be a work day if Heather didn't lose her pencil.
The window turned out pretty nice, I think. Good job! 😊
It did. I wish I had the time to finish but it is so much better than before.
Beautiful job Janie!
Thanks. It made such a difference.
Looking good ! You did an amazing job 💜💚
Thank you!! 😊 We are very happy with how the outside is coming along. The inside is still our big focus but having the free use of the lift was such a great opportunity to get some things done.
I felt you sitting there with the cooling towel. Bless your heart
They really work. When you're that hot you don't really care what you look like.🙃
I like to see what, and how much is falling from my trees, personally. If I have a lot of debris, I know I have a problem. These neatnicks picking up the yard, or "frond faries" as you call them, would drive me bananas.
These fronds fall all the time as a natural part of the tree growth. It is quite the chore to keep them picked up. I was happy for the help.
You are amazing!
Thank you. It helps that I love doing this stuff.
Looking good Janie 😊
Thank you! 😊
I just fed everything in my yard with empty Termite and Bee Spray Bottles I recycled. I used Medina Hasta Grow Plant. I used a spray bottle for long-reach spraying of the trees with diluted Captain Jack's Copper Fungicide. Both organic products. My trees no longer have that problem.
That sounds like a good result.
I know exactly what that 88/75 feels like!
We were very lucky it was 75%. It is actually okay if there is a stiff breeze coming off the gulf. When it's still outside it's brutal.
Great results.
Thank you! I'm saving those windows for winter. The hot air coming out of the window while I was up in the lift was crazy.
Try a beach umbrella clamped to the lift?
Shade is a remarkable thing. I'll have to remember that.
Everything looks so good! Thank you! For all you do!
Thank you so much! The outside has had the biggest visible change.
Amazing!
Thanks! All these improvements add up.
I suggest you play music for the garden party video. . . . How about . . . Garden Party !!! (By Ricky Nelson)
No One Recognized Me (I didn't even recognize myself ! )
I don't know that one. I'll have to look it up.
You have so much scrapping to do, I was trying to think if an easier way. Do you have a battery oscillating multitool? They make flexible scrappers it looks like might be great for this work. If you would like to try, I would be willing to purchase but don't know what you have to start with. Just a thought.
Thank you for the offer and the concern. I do have a whole assortment of scrapers and multi tools, it is just really hard to video up in that basket and really show any of the work being done in a detailed way. I have seen in videos a tool that actually shaves layers of paint off but there are so many nails sticking out I don't think it would work for us. Fortunately, the underside of the porch, where 80% of the painting exists, is in great shape although it needs a good cleaning.
I couldn't have a job, and own my house, there is so much deferred maintenance to do. So I have my own tools, and knowledge. The good news is that house is mainly brick exterior, and not much scraping has to be done.
I learned in my last job to never allow myself to be pushed into doing things any way other than what makes me comfortable so I bring my knowledge and tools to the job. That being said, I would never go up in that lift.
I'd also wear makeup but I know the job is very grimy, and you get very dirty doing what you do. I'd have to wear a hazmat suit, goggles, and a sock to protect my hair. Preferably doing it off-camera because these days everybody is a movie star. Not me!
It would be interesting to see a comparison to using a $300 can of marine paint v Zinssers water based all surface primer. We used an oil based product (Olympic Stain) back when I was painting on the West end, but I would never recommend anything but mold and mildew resistant water based paint. Anyways, I never get any calls, nobody invites me to come down there to help, and I miss working with you all. It looks great.
Keeping up a house can be a full-time job. You have been such a big help to us. Did you not get our email about the work days? We just sent one out. We don't make individual calls so be sure you are signed up as a volunteer on our website. That's how we send out information. We are working this Saturday, the 14th and next Saturday, the 21st from 9 to 3.
I have an itch to be there. I can bring my Medina spray, Captain Jack's Organic products, and I have been known to Hoe. Orange cones, 5... I don't open email, or click on links. Hope to see you soon.
What I do not understand is why you did not install scaffoldings instead of using the lift.
The lift was free to use and much safer than scaffolding.
@@leaguekempnerhouse the lift may have been free but it was very temporary. Scaffolding has been used for many years with a reputation of being very safe by workmen in construction. That is why you see it so often on construction sites. Everyone has a different approach however and different interests.
@@kennybagachips2714 We've used scaffolding before in other applications. Wouldn't it have been something to see this house being built and the scaffolding erected for the construction.
Hello
Howdy!🖐
you also needs tools to scrape wood instead of using a little manual scrapper.
The video doesn't show the whole process. In all, it was probably over 50 hours of work with a whole assortment of tools. Filming the work was not practical or safe so there are only snippets to show what was going on.
Scrapper definition: an Irish fighter.
You need professionals to deal with outside high up elements, they could do this in a week and then its done. Volunteers cannot do this they have no experience.
Janie mentioned how expensive the painters’ estimate was.
I see you have some common sense.
It would be great if we could hire out all the work but we just don't have the money to do that so we work with what we have. FYI, my father was a professional house painter and I worked with him for years. He had me painting and roofing by age 11. He also owned a wholesale paint supply business so painting is in my blood. I'm more than qualified to do this work. Don't assume our other volunteers are not skilled either. Heather has a professional decorative painting/contracting business and has done major historical restoration work and we have volunteers from all walks of life.
@@leaguekempnerhouse i cannot imagine you painting and roofing with your dad age 11 yo, its just adorable. how come you didnt protest and said i am a lady, its not for me
Hi Janie. You are still inspiring me and I’m itching to come back to the house. I’d like to volunteer but sadly, Taylor is too far to commute. Please give a big hello to Heather for me. Someone should make a documentary about the two of you.
