Good decision not to go. If you would have gone with the boat you might have gotten stranded in if that open water would have frozen over.. Also you need to make a serious note of that open water - that will always be a weak point through the winter even if it freezes over - be careful ! I'm so happy to see you take the ice crossing seriously and got proper safety gear.
Such a wonderful project, very inspiring! 😍 Thanks so much for sharing how everything goes. Can't wait to see what's next! 🤩 Merry Christmas and happy holidays to both of you! 🎄 Much love from Germany ❤
Hyvää joulua Oliver and Helena . Something to consider: You could hire a professional Logging company to come over with their real equipment. They can take down all the trees you will need for all your projects, debark them in seconds and leave them stacked and ready for you to build in Your time. I have had friends that did this in the states and have no doubt that your timbered country has the same. a four man crew with proper equipment can do this in 3 days - and I'm talking about your House project as well! Take care and I agree, wish decision to not cross the water😉
I highly advise you to get a drone and survey the island so you can use software to create a map of it. Using a 3D modeling software you could create 3D digital structures and based on then physically build them. That way you could also approximate costs and weight/amounts so you could plan purchases and trips ahead of time.
It’s better for you guys to be safe. I hope you have a happy holiday and an enjoyable new year. Sending you blessings from Southern Arizona. Looking forward to more work on the island and seeing you get your vacation area set up. ❤️☃️🎄❄️
Thanks for another great video!! I live in Taipei, Taiwan and Love the ducks as well! Looking forward to when the ice is thick enough and you get to straps on the blades and go for a skate
sled would exert a lot less pressure than human walking (because area of contact divided by weight), even when completely loaded with equipment. Also, maybe worth having snowshoes or skies for this purpose to increase are of contact so you can also travel safely.
Could be a worth while project to make some kind of floating dock bridge to connect to island to the land! Seems like the water is the only logistical problem getting over there, love the videos!
As said multiple times, even if they own the island, 99% people dont own the lake so building bridges etc massive projects over the are not doable. And as a Finn, i would say its also far from the idea, spirit and vibe of building a log cabin. Its not that big effort to take a boat, everybody else doest it like that.
@ pontoon bridges are legal in Finland. they’re made of plastic and can be pulled out for ease of loading/unloading supplies when you’re docking. Doesn’t need to me a complete bridge but a dock would be helpful with what they’re trying to accomplish
Instead of rowing the boat, if you have alot of stuff to move to the island, have one person on each shore, pull the boat back and forth with 2 ropes. Or is it too far?
go cut down a tree or two, and make a sled/raft. Your gran pappy would have. If the ice cracks, you are on a raft. If the ice doesnt crack, you are on a sled. The ice is thin at the edge of the lake because the ground... even if its frozen, under the ground is the heat of volcanos. The ice gets thicker in the middle. I would cross with a sled raft before I would cross in 100% fog.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to both of you. I've never built a log cabin, but I worry that the walls you are beginning to assemble aren't going to have the structural strength they will need. Check out Alone In The Wilderness by Dick Proenneke. It's an older series and it provides some excellent insight into log cabin building in Alaska.
Why don't you use the boat as a sled to distribute the weight? You can pole your way across the ice and if it breaks, you're in a boat. You can pull the sled behind the boat. I realize I have no idea what you're dealing with.
There seem to be a lot of foot traffic during the winter near your island. Aren’t you afraid that someone might do something nefarious to your property??
We filmed the Q&A portion of the video on a random island in Helsinki not our island because we couldn't get there and we still wanted the video to be out in nature, that's why there was so many people lol.
How far is it to the island at the shortest place? If you manage to walk across, tie a rope so that you can use it to pull yourself if the ice breaks. Use skis or wooden planks when you walk to distribute weight, same on the sledge. Have one person stand on the shore with a rope to pull the other if the ice breaks. Good luck!

Switching to Finnish was trippy in a good way. I think that might've been my first time hearing the language.

if you can walk over the other side, you can pull a sled over the ice with a long rope. then there is only the sled's weight on the ice at a time.
4:00 clever decision and I love this about your channel. Not everything has to be about feeding the content monster 😂 (ie me, the viewer)
considering you have no experience, you made a lot of good progress.
Merry Christmas to both of you!
Happy Holidays ❤
Thank you, friend; good luck and Happy holidays.. best wishes ❤️
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
It's always better to be safe than sorry
Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!
Best wishes for you and your friend/family. 🎄🎆
Question: can’t you “ski” over in a canoe? So you are safe If the ice breaks?
Merry Christmas Oliver and Helena 🎁🎄✨

@@EiraAimo20:32 like he said, if he can make a modular one that can be put in and out of water, and make it for cheap, it would be worth doing
@@RubyLaboratory Not legal, no matter how modular it is. You are not allowed to ever close off a water course

YEAH BABE
Why not build where your tent is. Since you have a floor.

For someone that is kind of a fan of Linus Torvalds, I never heard enough Finnish to get the impression it sounds like, old.

You could get in your boat and push yourself across either with your legs or your break bar
So, where in California did you go to community college? I’m from the Bay Area and I’ve gone to a couple of them
Maybe it's just me, but I feel how americanly confused he is measuring ice thickness using centimeters😂
7:45 who is that person walking behind you ?
He isnt on the island so its probably locals walking past.
The minister of foreign affairs
They're not on the island, probably on public land, and I'm pretty sure not everybody in Finland knows each other.
IQ? @zandonnawayangkau7980
Who was that guy walking behind you ?
sasquatch
🤠🎄🎄🎄🥳🥳🎉🎉👋👋

Marry Christmas to you and your loved ones. 🏕
I have a question for you, Helena: why did you choose to study in Finland?
With love from Denmark ❤
