Nicole: Wilbur-by-the-Sea Oceanfront Homes Unsafe Following Dangerous Storm Surge

  • Dangerous storm surge from Nicole left beachfront homes teetering on the edge or, in some cases, completely washed away. One of the coastal communities with serious infrastructure damage is Wilbur-by-the-Sea. This stretch of beach is in unincorporated Volusia County, one of the rare spots on the coast that does not have a condominium or hotel high-rise. Instead, it was charming beachfront homes. FOX Weather Meteorologist Katie Garner was there as families returned. #nicole #foxweather

    You can’t rebuild on sinking
    Sand that whole beach
Has eroded and it’s probably nothing but limestone underneath... that’s just
To bad; even if they try
    Another hurricane will
    Come and destroy more
    They may even lose their
    Lives they should count
    There blessings and
    Move on....👁

How would homeowners rebuild if the land has been eroded away on many of these properties? I'm not from Florida, so when I hear people talking about rebuilding, I can't figure out how that would work...

Knock them down and let the coastlines go natural . It's a waste of money to renourish only for the next storm next year to take it all away again. Homes and big high rises should never have been built close to the waters. FL will be experiencing more disasters to come , get be prepared.

This area seems like it is no longer viable for homes on this strip, the coast line has been altered by the storms and moved inland

The coast line was destroyed by man. Build your life on an earthquake fault and guess what happens? Build your house on sand and this is what happens. Build your house on the banks of a river and see what happens. What possess people to build their lives in such destructive ways and expect different results? Not being mean, just being realistic.

Bravo to the surfers helping to care for the beach. Also, I would never revel in a family losing their home. Whats with some of these comments? That being said- from now on they shouldn't let anyone build ON the beach. Not houses, not hotels, not businesses. Not only is it dangerous, but also no one owns the ocean. It should be enjoyed, and respected, by all.

    • @andreacalkins5189
      @andreacalkins5189 Рік тому

Those who built on sand set themselves up for destruction and loss. The comments are reality - someone's loss is someone's gain. On the West Coast - South of San Francisco, houses are dropping off into the ocean due to erosion. The ocean is claiming its own...man made beaches will always lose to nature. Water is a great destroyer of wealth, and I'm not surprised that people lose to water many times over, yet they rebuild expecting it to last. The engineering on some of those sea walls held up, some of it didn't. We all know that walls doesn't keep anything out.

@@andreacalkins5189 making cheering and clapping emotes for someone losing their home isn't reality. It's ugly jealousy. Your "reasoning" for behavior like that is weak-sauce. I see you.

I agree about the mean comments. I live in Ormond-by-the-Sea, a few miles north. I live on the island too, but on a side street, not directly on the beach, but this breaks my heart to see our lovely beach leveled and our neighbors homes destroyed. 💔💔💔

      @Beachpaintings Рік тому

My thoughts exactly. None of the people here care when high-tide is either. The storm is over. High-tide isn't coming up into their yards anymore. Acting like sand doesn't crumble and like every high-tide is water rising 5 feet above sea level into people's homes is stupid. The news skews literally everything these days. If this is how they report a natural disaster imagine just how bad the reporting is on everything else.

@@SteveSmith-kd9if If you continue doing the same thing over and over gain and expect different results is called insanity. Plenty of people here on the West Coast built their homes on an earthquake fault. Guaranteed if it falls down, they won't put another structure on that fault line. Local and State authorities wouldn't allow it, and earthquake insurance is not affordable. I imagine homeowners insurance in Florida is outrageous as well. Can't insure a mobile, so the loss is even greater for many. I am sorry for your loss. I know that sorry doesn't restore your situation. We've had plenty of destructive fires here, so, we're in the same boat but intact.

      Florida is built on
      “Limestone “ which means
That fill dirt; on very old
      Maps only the panhandle
Existed; I know I’ve been through many hurricanes in Florida but now I live in the mountains on the West Coast.. If they have a
      Tsunami 🌊 practically
      The whole state is
      Doomed and in every town
      And city there are
      Sinkholes there was
One not to far from where I lived and it was on a major road and they kept filling it in..
      Mercy... Floridians are in
      For the rollercoaster ride
Of their lives; I say this with sadness because most of my family is there some in the most dangerous areas such as South Florida... no one looks up the geological issues with Florida they just buy buy buy and build build build...
      The problem with Florida
There’s only one way out 👈🏼
      And its about 30 million
      People..Right???😐
