@@paulohagan3309 El is a northwest semetic word meaning a god in general. Elohim is like the 70+ gods of the pantheon but it's now used as a name for YHWH. There's theory to believe because of that what happened was after the Jews returned from their exile in Babylon with Cyrus the Great's conquerings, they turned their religion into monotheism through Zoroastrianism, combining most of the gods into one supreme being. That explains the name being the same and why some aspects of other northwestern semetic religions are in it when it just makes no sense like the Leviathan in Job.

Remember their indo-european language did not have vowels. It would start with a consonant. Ca-Na-Ni-Te, Ka-Ma-TA, KA-NA-Sa, Ka or Ha is a letter symbolised with a solar symbol, meaning shining a circle with a cross in it. The sun. TA, TI, TE. Comes from a word meaning land or to strike. So these people used ancient words meaning land. Kameti, Cananite both mean "from the shining land or land of god". They used all the same symbols, of a solar worshipping cult. TA, TI OR DA or De meant land Hathor or Hazor meant land which Ha or Horus (solar deity) shines down on Ta Tyr Ter, meant skygod in indo-E, but came to mean to strike or land. Thor from Tyr God of thunder and lightning with a hammer is a more recent example. The Dananna(female personification land of light or rays land on), or Hanna meaning shining mother goddess, Channa meaning grace (light) of god. Soon 'the shining ones' or the Danu, tribe of Dan, indo-E of Don or Dawn. SHINING Ones. Ka Ha Ra Ta Da Pha La Ya Ma. All words descended shining, light, sound, word, soul, thought, knowing. Ra Ru Ri. In Minoan linear a and b. The symbols for Ri, Ru and Ri, were like horned crowns of a bull, or light coming from between two mounds, like the crown of Ra and Horus held a solar disk, Hathor or another goddess whose helm was a throne had this same symbol. A throne symbol she was named the land of Horus. The land of the shining. The oldest symbol for light or vav waw, wave, or what we now use as A for thousands of years, came from a pictogram meaning mouth or to speak. FIRST THERE WAS DARKNESS AND THEN SPOKE THE WORD, THEN THERE WAS LIGHT. In linear A Minoan, a throne with a solar symbol makes the sound Ra. The throne btw looked like an L. They didn't have a symbol for L yet so they used r. Later they had HeLlios, or Ha La OS. But it was originally Ha Ra OS or Horus. Solar Deities. All from lands titled. The shining land. Solar deity Yeshua said. I am the light. I am the Truth. I AM THE WAY. TRULY I say to you, you are gods. The kingdom of god is within you. Indo aryan. Ja was light, light was Ka, Ka was the soul. Which at death would leave. through your mouth. At the beginning was the word. LOGOS. Which is the ancestor of the word LUGH or LIGHT.

This is so interesting. I watched Nova's the bible's buried secrets a while back and am looking forward to seeing what are the latest theories and how the term El is interpreted.
El is from the twisted horms of the ram. He became the Greek Ram headed God Zeus Ammon. El was "borrowed" from North Africian myth. Jesus was quoted as saying "I Jupiter and my father Saturn, are one." He is also made to say, "Before Abraham/Saturn/Time was born, I am the son of Ge. Ge took clay, mixed it with her menses, breathed on it, giving it life. This bloody mass of clay became her son/consort.

Context is very important here: these Canaanite "cities" were quite small and rustic, little more than walled villages of a few thousand people. They're only impressive in regard to Ancient Canaan but were paltry compared to the cities of neighboring nations like Egypt and Mesopotamia.
This is great. But I need more maps, I know I'm not alone. What was the borders of Egypt and Canaan during this time period? Or where were these cities at? Where is that mountain again? Other than that, I'm a fan of this series.
Great video, thank you for it. I think the term Canaan is more synonymous with the Levant as a whole rather than just the south. The north did eventually distinguish themselves as separate from the south but they were still culturally the same; especially with Baal Cycle influence on southern Canaan.
Supposedly Phoenicians mostly considered themselves as ‘Canaanites’. North Africa’s Iberomaurusian culture mixed with the cultures from the caucuses in the Levant to create the Natufian culture. Which has it’s presence all across the Levant in fairly high percentages today. My family ancestry from the K6 calculator: Ancient Eurasia K6 Ancestral North Eurasian: 17.29% Ancestral South Eurasian: 5.78% East Asian: .99% West European Hunter-Gatherer: 41.24% Natufian: 34.7% Sub-Saharan: 0% 64.7% Morocco_Jews 35.3% French Basque. Genetic Distance: 0.64 Then I’m genetically similar to population groups like Mizrahi, North Africans, Egyptians, Bedouin, Mozabite, Druze (a lot of which live in Lebanon actually), Cypriots and such today. My families actually been living in the western world for quite some time and has connections to European royalty/nobility and has been involved with societies of occult nature. But despite my family being in the west and marrying into such groups, I’m still very genetically similar to modern Moroccans, especially Mizrahi Jews. Which makes sense because Phoenicians were said to have colonies or trading outposts as far as from Tyre to Èire (Ireland) and possibly in Scandinavia. The early monopolies on trade would’ve made them very financially successful in their respective areas, thus gaining influence and making good candidates for marriages.

The history of the Canaanites was part Egyptian. Hyksos or hykussos were rulers originally from Canaan. The majority in northern Egypt at that time were Canaanites. During this time probably the name kanaan or Kannaiten took its course.@@ConnortheCanaanite
@@maher43210 Very true, there also seems to be cultural connections and some genetic connections from Hittites in Anatolia, Cypriots, Etruscans of course North African early cultures and other Mediterranean island populations, along with Iberians. Hittites did push down southward into Canaan and Canaanites, or Punic Canaanites settled and traded with quite a bit of regions far and wide.
8:22 a bull! Does anybody else find a possible relationship between the Canaanites bull and the one made by the Israelites returning from Egypt in Mount Sinai?
You’re onto something. The golden calf story in Exodus is likely based on polemics around the time of the Assyrian invasion of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. In 1 Kings Jeroboam I is alleged to have set them up and said to the Israelites that the bull was God. Likewise, the names of his sons match the names of the sons of Aaron who were killed by God. I think it was Jeroboam II though who actually set up the two temples in Dan and Bethel with the golden calves, which is why Hosea also spoke about it, as it was probably a controversy at the time. That got brought down South and by the time the Torah was put together it made it in there.
Great video! I have become very interested in archaeology recently, so I'm excited to see the upcoming episodes. I have a question about the deductive method used for newly found archaeological objects. So if you were to find some pottery, or even one of the figurines of the gods, how do you deduce information about the society that produced it? Is there some rigorous scientifically driven method, and if so, what is it called? I'm curious about the extent to which you can be certain that society X was "this" advanced at "this" time, or whether the deducted information is more of an approximation. Thanks!
That is why modern archaeology doesn't just find singular objects but puts a huge emphasis on the context in which these objects were found. The location of the object, it's orientation, surrounding structures, other objects, and all the other things that you can't really display in a museum, is very important for determining what an object actually is. The second part is extensive cross-referencing. "This is probably Baal because of his hand gesture" is a result of this. We may have similar statues from elsewhere, where the context makes it clear that this is a depiction of Baal. We may have other similar statues all found in temple buildings (and we can assume that they're temples because we can cross-reference them with other sites with the same architecture where the purpose is more evident). We may have statues that have a different iconography because they're statues of rulers so we can deduce that this one is probably not a king but some other person, and we know that they had statues of their gods, so it's a decent working hypothesis to call this a statue of a god. And so on; essentially a huge puzzle game that is ever expanding and changing when new stuff comes to light. The same with pottery. Pottery has styles, techniques, materials, and other characteristics that evolve over time and are different across regions or cultures. Determining the style of pottery at a site tells us a lot about who lived there, and when. Finding a statue next to that, in a context that shows that both the pottery and the statue were used and buried there at the same time, means that we can assign a background to that statue. And third, we have the object itself. A 3kg bronze statue in a region that has no tin mining, says a lot about the technological capabilities, trade connections, and wealth of the society producing it.
@@varana Thanks for the in depth replay! Appreciate it. If you happen to know a book or article that goes over the process well, I would be interested.
Egypt is an imposed EXONYM from the CLASSICAL Ptolemaic period. It cannot be accurately used for that location when referring to periods that preceded it. What was the ENDONYM that those people used? Though not exactly, ‘NYLE PHOENIXIAN’ can add clarity to our overstanding. Khemet is an ENDONYM that is highly underlooked. Many opportunities to introduce the EXONYM ‘PHOENIXIAN’ in this presentation were missed since Canaani = Phoenixian. The Oracles/Adepts of Khemit told the Greeks that they (Khemists) were descendren of a survivor colony of the Atlantean (Herodotus MAP) cataclysm, which meant that they found sanctuary in the highlands of the upper Nyle (Aethiopia) while the earth resettled enough to descend downriver to résumé proliferation. Connecting Atlantes (Titans) to Aethiopia (Macrobians/Giants) and Khemet (Nyle Phoenixians/Canaanites) becomes an inescapable paradigm which is ripe for further exploration involving our applications of terminology with associated timelines.
I think the reason the Israelite writters bring up Bael was because he was big within their group, and they wanted to shift back to El worship. "You don't want to worship Bael, he was the god of the ppl we conquered."
El was the main Canaanite god, Asherah his wife. Baal and Yahweh were their sons, and Anat their daughter. When the Israeites finally split off, they took Yahweh with them, and gave him El's qualities.
@@sophiawilson8696 Yup, he began as a second-tier war god in the massive Canaanite pantheon. Each "tribe" (Israelites, Moabites, Hittites, etc) that broke away between 1300 and 900 BCE took a different set of those gods with them. Israel didn't become fully monotheistic until around 650 BCE.
“Canaan” was an extension of “Ham”. That’s the connection. The names can possibly be seen as a region or type people. The Curse of Ham (Canaan) could be a figure of speech as for as independency.
@@Tsitsi414 USA would be Land of Biden currently. That’s how I’m associating it. If Canaan was Ham’s son it’s very safe to say black people were in Israel before it was named Israel (when it was Land of Canaan) and it was written in a way (or omitted) to justify invasion or as offering after being enslaved (freed or fled) under a certain ruler, foreign ruler. Also, if the Hebrews were Africa (Ham) then went to Israel (Cannan), which the Hebrew language was developed based on the Proto Canaanite (Canaan) alphabet, the Hebrews were in a black region and went to another black region. The earliest signs of math was in Egypt under Amenemhat III.
Would greatly appreciate a video to segregate fact from fiction about Ashkenaz son of Gomer and father of Semiramis and their connection with Canaanites socio-economic, religious and political (without referring to the “curse” of Ham).
-ites is a latinization/englishification of names. Here, i can do it too: Romanites, hellenites, americanites, canadaites, germanites, japanites...someone just went by the rules of thumb here.
There is a general misconception that the Israelites were specifically monotheistic, but in fact many among them maintained various practices. (We know this also from the Maccabees recording dead soldiers wearing talismans. Besides, they didn't have to be reminded constantly if they were always 'faithful'.) In referring to the Canaanites and other '-ites' in the region, there was definitely a mixture as well. For that reason alone, the Jews/Israelites were called to be 'set apart' by their rituals and practices. It's just a point that most today tend to overlook, and assume each territory was homogeneous, which was simply not the case. PS: 'Holy of Holies' is not a term reserved or developed from the Solomonic Temple, but common among many religions of the time. I notice that this narrator is not always accurate (or takes liberties) in his script. In another episode he says that there was no evidence that 'Peter was ever in Rome or died there", a view espoused by modern Protestant scholars. By whatever yardstick he chose to use, you can't even be certain the New Testament was written by anyone these were attributed to. This is meant to be historical commentary with a theological bias? I hope this channel can be more explicit.
No ancestors of jews who Intermarried with the Khazars were arameans. They spoked aramaic language Aramaic and Türkic languages are similar because the Arameans were related to the Sumerians, who are the predecessors of the Türks
A few interesting facts and things I noticed in Hebrew: In Modern Hebrew, "el" means "god" (*a* god). According to Britannica, Eloah is a name for God. In modern Hebrew "the god of" is "elohey", but that also means "the god*s* of" - I don't think a singular form exists in use, but "eloha" it *might* mean "the god of" (singular). Also, "elohim" means "gods" in Modern Hebrew. The "im" at the end if a suffix for plural. I also read thet El was assimilated into YHWH at some point - hence "el" meaning "god", "elohim", and possibly one of the reasons YHWH is said to have 99 names - at least partially due to assimilation - maybe. Another thing I read is the "im" plural suffix was used to express greatness for Eloah was added - hence "Elohim" - one of the names in the Hebrew Bible for the Israelite God, which is still used nowadays in Modern Hebrew to mean God. I'm not sure if it was used in any other contexts or with any other beings, concepts or words.
Yep. There are more than a 100 other Biblical words with this use of -im~-ey with various abstract meanings for words from ‘wheat’ to ‘water’ to ‘virginity’.
They claim it was good vs evil but in reality, the early jews *israelites* didn't like their neighbors and decided to go on the path of genocide. Which isn't uncommon in judeo Christian tradition.
There isn't necessarily a connection. The most probable theory is that el was the main god of the Israelites (Isra- EL), Yahwah was the name of the Judean main god (the beginning part Yehuda is an abbreviation of Yahwah). They were both polytheistic until the Israelites were destroyed and many probably moved to Judea, where king Hezekiah unified them under Yahwah and at least tried to make him the only god.
It's a pretty good coincidence that the Canaanite god El (alias El Elyon) has the same name title of the Jewish god Yahweh (alias El Elyon and a bunch of other names) or that there's an archeological finding that says "Yahweh and his Asherah", Asherah was a goddess married to the Caananite god El, his consort. Regarding that the Israelites ARCHEOLOGICALLY never came from or were enslaved in Egypt but they've been always in Canaan. EDIT: Coincidence = Irony
I think that the amorites were canaanites that ambushed sumerian regions and caused atrocities. In the sumerian renaissance the the amorites were pushed out. But there were many amorites that where integrated and ruled. They stayed but distanced themselves from the amorites and their culture. This went so far that they denied their origins and hated their ancestors. IMHO the authors of the old testament were of that origin. The hate of the canaanites in the Old Testament is denial of the own uncivilized origins.
Yes its true - ammorites became turkic and asian Because turks are asians and descendants of sumerians Other canaanites not asian at all especially hittites - their race became different despite the fact that they are also descendants of Canaan
If the Israelites did not come into being until after the collapse of both the bronze age and Canaanites how then was a temple structure of the Canaanites influenced by/naming from the Temple of Solomon? The monarchy and subsequently Solomon was not established until much later.

Abram on his voyage from Ur to the lands of Canaan passed by Bethel. The house or temple of “El” the most high God of the Canaanite. Curiously El was the Father of Baal. Later in the OT an entity speaking to Abram describes itself as the God of Bethel…El Elyon, El shaddai, etc. Are these possibly the beliefs that merged with the beliefs of Abraham, integrated into the Yahweh cult in their conquest of these lands and hence the basis for the establishment of the temple system and priesthood class? The rest is history…
Not just now. The Arabic word Allah and ilaha are cognates of the Hebrew word El. That suggests El probably meant the same in the original Hebrew language.
Yes, the names of the angels Michael and Gabriel are derivatives of the named god El. Yahweh being a different later god that combined the other earlier gods and their powers into a single worshiped god. That's why we had the whole deal in the pentateuch about worshiping only one god because the clergy had decided to modify the faith and present new rules with the tablets and newly written Mosaic laws. This adamant view of having only a single monotheistic god of course, has caused huge problems all throughout history clashing with competing pantheon god views and leading to hilarious solutions such as trinitarianism or even more refinements to the christian faiths. I suggest studying Arianism for a deeper understanding of how the christian religion has evolved at an early time coming to grips in it's practices and beliefs. The terms for god used in the bible are all not likely cognate with each other as they are written usually by different authors at different times. Even apparent generalization such as "The Lord" and "The Father" have distinct meaning and may not be related with other mentions of each other in the bible. Taken in this context the schizoid nature of god makes more sense when we realize we are not presented with one constant god but local variants separated by changing culture and time.
God from the Bible is also depicted as a "normal looking human", in fact a normal human form is implied when he said "let us make man in our image" right before he created Adam in the Bible.
Archeology is now showing that the original Jewish people were also canaanites the exodus did not happen there was no conquest of canaan, also the first Jews also hung on to their 'pagan' beliefs for many years, gods wife Ishtar is a good example just as the first Christians hedged their bets still worshipping the local gods many early christian roman graves contain both iconography.

However, the link to an earlier "summary" on "Who is Jesus Christ" is just awful. Even for a summary, it is deeply problematic. Compare Who is the Founder of Hinduism - while it has problems being a summary it at least sounds like it is being presented in a academically neutral position. The Who is Jesus, had me feeling I was being preached at by a missionary, not discussing scholarly facts and the interesting questions that arise.
My family ancestry from the K6 calculator:
Ancient Eurasia K6
Ancestral North Eurasian: 17.29%
Ancestral South Eurasian: 5.78%
East Asian: .99%
West European Hunter-Gatherer: 41.24%
Natufian: 34.7%
Sub-Saharan: 0%
64.7% Morocco_Jews 35.3% French Basque. Genetic Distance: 0.64
Then I’m genetically similar to population groups like Mizrahi, North Africans, Egyptians, Bedouin, Mozabite, Druze (a lot of which live in Lebanon actually), Cypriots and such today.
Phoenician is a Greek word for Canaan. “phoínix” - is purple

@@maher43210 Very true, there also seems to be cultural connections and some genetic connections from Hittites in Anatolia, Cypriots, Etruscans of course North African early cultures and other Mediterranean island populations, along with Iberians.

Baal, it actually El who father to be the of all the Gods.
El was the main Canaanite god, Asherah his wife. Baal and Yahweh were their sons, and Anat their daughter. When the Israeites finally split off, they took Yahweh with them, and gave him El's qualities.
You maybe right 😉!!!
@@AtheistEdge interesting I never that point that Yahweh was one of El's children?.
More research needed because as far as I know, Ham was the progenitor of the blacks and Canaan was his son. So what's going on ? 🤔

The Israelites were and are Canaanites: the Bible got it wrong.
No ancestors of jews who Intermarried with the Khazars were arameans. They spoked aramaic language

A few interesting facts and things I noticed in Hebrew:
In Modern Hebrew, "el" means "god" (*a* god).
According to Britannica, Eloah is a name for God. In modern Hebrew "the god of" is "elohey", but that also means "the god*s* of" - I don't think a singular
form exists in use, but "eloha" it *might* mean "the god of" (singular).
Which isn't uncommon in judeo Christian tradition.
what has happened before, will happen again :(
As we see today

Is there a connection between the Canaanite god El and the Hebrew god Yahweh?
Yes. The Israelites WERE canaanites. Yahweh was simply one of the gods of the canaante pantheon.
The Israelites formed as a tribal nomadic conglomerate after the the collapse, that made dense urban populations impossible to feed
Watch Pagan Origin of Judaism
I've heard that some people think the Idea of Judaism God is evolved or influenced from El, what are your thoughts?
The main idea of judaism now (judaism are now ruling by who? Canaanites) to bring antichrist to the world
But antichrist is the devil himself
The Canaanites also worshipped a war- and storm-god named Yahweh, didn't they? A late addition to their Pantheon of unknown origins?
You forgot about the termites!! LOL
Yes its true - ammorites became turkic and asian
Because turks are asians and descendants of sumerians
Other canaanites not asian at all especially hittites - their race became different despite the fact that they are also descendants of Canaan
this is how the Kazakhs appeared lol
And chuvashs - we are were mixed with hunns - and thus the Turks became ultra-Asians and the Mongoloid race

"EL" is now the hebrew word for god....
I wonder if these gods were kings of the past, and if not where they came from and why they were depicted as normal looking humans.

Having studied comparative religious studies as part of my degree, I'm really enjoying you ReligionForBreakfast, and this series, on this channel. You specifically mention in your other channel that you are taking a scholarly approach, what is the approach for this channel?
Hi Steve, this video is the 5th episode in my 15-episode collaboration with Patheos. I have full editorial control for this specific series, and I used my usual scholarly, nonsectarian approach. I can't speak for Patheos, but from my experience, they are an interfaith platform with many different religious and non-religious writers, some writing from a scholarly perspective, some not.
