- Fixing the rear of the car. This episode took longer than usual, at summer time it is struggle to go to dark garage. Also, the rear beam was a real pain to fix. It is very annoying to see that previous owner have used constantly the "hide rust with another layer of patches" method, all over again..
I just discovered this fascinating series. Hats off to you Sir.

In my early years, i was having my own restauration project with some early 70s BMW 02 series. But this is far beyond anything that i have seen. Of course, there is always a car that is even worse. But this old Opel GT has rust everywhere there are more than one layer of metal 🤨frankly speaking no surprise for a German car of that period. And Opel weren´t famous for being preserved very well against rust. In fact this was true until the 2000s. My first own car was a 1980 Opel Kadett Caravan. After some years, the side beams were literally gone and had to be replaced.
Anyway, i have the deepest respect for your skills and your patience. I always wanted to restore cars as a professional, and finally i ended up having a career in Accounting 😅
But i still think it´s very satisfying to grab a sheet of metal and just bend it, weld it and voila, you have a car. Your videos are so relaxing. I really enjoy the unique style. Also the music score is perfect choice. I´m watching lots of stuff like this on UA-cam, and my verdict on this video series is 10/10 🤩
I´m really looking forward to see the GT back on the road again. Although it´s not really a sports car, even with that 1900 cc engine. Anyway, keep going !
Huge thanks for the comment. These comments makes the documenting and all the editing worth the effort. Yes, 1970's cars in general were prone to rust, and for this GT being extra prone is that since the car is full of hidden and sealed compartments, that could collect dust and moist. And in addition to that, poor repairs that removed the last venting holes, made it worse. I will tackle this in next episode a bit more. On one thing I disagree, this IS a sports car, it is two seated, (front) mid engine, sporty looking car. It is not a super car, but definitely a sports car :). And Thanks for 10/10 rating !!!!
@@GT1900garage Ok, when i compare the GT with other sporty coupes, that were very popular back in the early 70s, it´s quite competitive. Given the power / weight ratio, the price and top speed, the GT was on about the same level. Considering especially the front mid engine, i have to admit, the GT was at least a sports car 🤗
When i was a little boy, i remember the cool young men in Germany also used to drive a Ford Capri, Fiat 128 Coupe or X1/9, BMW 02, Alfa Romeo, VW Porsche 914 and of course the Opel Manta A. The next affordable step up would have been an Opel Commodore C Coupe, or an Audi 100 Coupe.
Most important: Speedometer up to 200km/h, some extra headlights, a black hood, Talbot mirrors and Rally stripes.
Oh, a five-tone-fanfare playing River-Kwai-March / La Cucaracha was illegal and therefore a very desirable add-on 😆
BTW: have you already considered the new color for your GT? Maybe the original Orange or one of those fancy 70s metallic colors?
Sorry, I have missed this comment. X1/9 was one of the candidates I searched for...I agree with everything you said, and Oh, I do remember those exact tones for Alpine horns....Illegal in Finland back then also.
Most likely car will be painted a Porche red, I am still in the middle of process here....

@@GT1900garage About 20 minutes by car from Niagara Falls in province of Ontario. Typical summer day is 28C with 80% humidity. It is very green here and has growing wine industry. How is Finland doing with all the craziness coming from Russia? Do you have mandatory military training?
Thanks for reply, I have visited BC years ago and liked it 100%. Thanks for asking, we are doing as usual, basically nothing has changed here except tourism suffers from lack of rich Russians. But then again, is it a bad thing...? And yes we have had conscription for ages, I served in early 90's, and both my sons served in 2020's and they liked it very much. In 90's it was rather boring time, but nowadays service time is really boosted with modern technology and intriguing training. Good indication for that is that more and more young women do voluntary military service.
If Carlsberg were to make videos on car restoration than this would be it . I've been catching up with your work & am really impressed . the job satisfaction you must get from this must be amazing. I paused the various other videos from you & think how would i do that......convince myself thats how i would do it and hit play and you come out with the must better method :) top work...A+++++

The intro looks as if the FAA tries to cobble together the remains of a plane wreck to search for the crash cause ... GTs were already bad in the late 1980s due to the inferiour french bodywork. I had a few of them. Nice to see you working. Wakes up old memories.

@@GT1900garage And it did work for that part. I really like the style of video - particularly those nice stop-motion sequences, where parts and tools gather around each other. I guess this is rather time-consuming. Apart from the actual work that has to be done as well. Positively earns a thumbs-up !

Found in the depths of the Atlantic? That thing was a lost cause, until you found it. The cost to repair vs. vehicle value does not compute for the normal person. And the skills to bring it back are not in the wheel house of your average garage joe. It takes someone like you to save a car like this from being so far gone. New steel, properly formed and installed is not childs play. This GT will live on for decades to come, I know it'd say thank you if it could.
Thanks for the uplifting comment. Yes, it has been a surprise to me as well, how deeply rusted this GT was. Person who sold it to me, said that there are some metal work, but nothing major. And the rear end truly seemed to be from depths of the Atlantic, well oxidised I´d say.
I feel your pain, I once bought a car that was 93% Bondo. -_-
But hopefully that remaining 7% was still worth saving ?

again....massively impressive...it's a necessary evil to chop out that much but it shows the car was completely neglected previously and now you're giving it a second lease of life !... also what is that white primer? is it weld through Hammerite?
Thanks for the comment, and yes, the car is totally neglected and not maintained (except mechanically). One of the reason is that this car has very interesting history being a movie an TV prop car for German cinema production. I may have cool history, but all paintwork and body repairs are quick fixes... Some of these crappy fixes are from earlier times, but still... White primes is Maston weld primer, I use this to prevent surface rust BEFORE car is completely media blasted. Then it will be sealed with industrial epoxy primer. So this paint will be left only in between seams that cannot be reached afterwards..
Impressive work, not an easy car to work on! It has great looks but rusts too much.

Hah, Yes. I am aware of the paradox, and gave a thought or two for it. If you have noticed, I have kept all the pieces I have took away from the body, and thinking what to do with them...Would be nice to incorporate some of the pieces to the final car...or create some statue or other work of art from them :D
What engine do these cars have? Is it a good and fun one?
These models have 1.9 liter engines, about 90bhp. Not much of a muscle, but s**t load of fun...Can't wait to take her to the curvy roads....

Videos like this shouldn't be allowed to last less than 59:59 minutes and should be posted in sequences of two per week, minimum. Specially considering it is a real video and not a f... slideshow, as many users post. Something to fix there😂
Ha, thanks for comment. Summertime has been much slower progress...so much other things to do during summer. This 15min episode in three weeks is unfortunately absolutely max... But I appreciate your comment...

Hah ! Yes, although there are plenty of historic projects where I see that they are building a car around pair of rusted fenders, so comparing to that we are still on the safe side.. But yes, a lot of metal has been cut of. Currently there are only about 20 kg chopped out, and that is about 4-5% of the weight of the body. I am saving every piece of the original metal so I could do that calculation at the end...we'll see

@@GT1900garage with respect to your affection to this GT model, I had a bad experience with 1978 Opel which at 16 years age began to rust everywhere (just purchased it being young, and limited cash). Good metal, paint and corrosion protection while manufacturing, and accurate handling by previous owners - these two criteria were missing, and my first car became first disappointment. Now, as car for classic hobby I have 1981 Lada 1500 (I love its Fiat Speciale design and chrome) and it looks/runs like 5years old car. I will spend all necessary cash to keep it running for next …ty years because it does worth it. I wish you luck and can delete my comment if unpleasant, I’m slowly loosing manners since mobilised to Ukrainian AF in feb-22.
