In 1976, Radio 3XY (Melbourne) surveyed 20,000 Beatle fans as to their favourite song. Four songs from A Hard Day’s Night made the Top 50: 8. A Hard Day’s Night 27. Can’t Buy Me Love 35. If I Fell 47. I Should Have Known Better
1. A Hard Day's Night 2. If I Fell 3. And I Love Her 4. I Should Have Known Better 5. I'll Be Back 6. Things We Said Today 7. Can't Buy Me Love 8. I'm Happy Just To Dance With You 9. Any Time At All 10. You Can't Do That 11. Tell Me Why 12. I'll Cry Instead 14. When I Get Home general: 8.5/10 (I love the first 7 songs)
my Ranking: 1. Tell Me Why 2. I'm Happy Just To Dance With You 3. Any Time At All 4. If I Fell 5. I Should Have Known Better 6. And I Love Her 7. A Hard Day'S Night 8. When I Get Home 9. You Can't Do That 10. I'll Be Back 11. Can't Buy Me Love 12. I'll Cry Instead 13. Things We Said Today
My top 13. Tell Me Why (There's something about this song that I don't like, maybe it's too messy) 12. I'll Cry Instead (It's a solid song, though nothing more than that) 11. I'm Happy Just To Dance With You (It's very cute) 10. Any Time At All (A decent and quite entertaining soft rock song) 9. I'll Be Back (A different ballad than what we are used to. I love harmonies. The song is quite dark, something worth admiring) 8. You Can't Do That (A rock song with a lot of energy, Lennon's guitar and voice give it a touch of intrigue) 7. When I Get Home (Another amazing rock song, of course it's killer rock) 6. Things We Said Today (I love its western melody, the song itself is amazing and catchy) 5. And I Love Her (A soft ballad that captures many emotions) 4. I Should Have Known Better (Like the previous case, this song captures many emotions, although it does it in a different way; much more cheerful) 3. If I Fell (It's an incredible soft ballad, harmonious and pure joy. From the intro it captures the listener) 2. A Hard Day's Night (What can you say that hasn't been said? From the initial chord the song becomes an instant favorite) 1. Can't Buy Me Love (I love its fast and catchy rhythm, which makes this song one of my favorite firsts)
1. I Should Have Known Better 2. I’ll Be Back 3. If I Fell 4. Any Time at All 5. A Hard Day’s Night 6. You Can’t Do That 7. I’ll Cry Instead 8. Things We Said Today 9. And I Love Her 10. Can’t Buy Me Love 11. I’m Happy Just to Dance With You 12. When I Get Home 13. Tell Me Why
My Listing: 1. A Hard Day’s Night 2. And I Love Her 3. I’ll Be Back 4. Things We Said Today 5. You Can’t Do That 6. Can’t Buy Me Love 7. I’ll Cry Instead 8. If I Fell 9. I Should Have Known Better 10. I’m Happy Just To Dance With You 11. Any Time At All 12. Tell Me Why 13. When I Get Home
This was REALLY tough as songs 2 thru 7 depend on my mood and can move around. But If I Fell is solid #1. 13. When I Get Home 12. Tell Me Why 11. I'm Happy just to dance with you 10. I'll Cry Instead 9. Can't Buy Me Love 8. Things We said Today 7. I'll Be Back 6. You Can't Do That 5. And I Love Her 4. I should've known better 3. A Hard Day's Night 2. Anytime at all 1. If I Fell
13. I'm Happy Just To Dance With You 12. Tell Me Why 11. I'll Cry Instead 10. When I Get Home 9. You Can't Do That 8. Anytime At All 7. I Should Have Known Better 6. I'll Be Back 5. Things We Said Today 4. Can't Buy Me Love 3. If I Fell 2. And I Love Her 1. A Hard Day's Night I'm Happy Just To Dance With You is the only song for which i don't really care. This album is way better than the first two albums. Songs like I'll Cry Instead, A Hard Day's Night, Can't Buy Me Love, And I Love Her, If I Fell, Things We Said Today are the proof that this album was a big improvement on beatles songwriting, plus it was the first one on which every single song was written by Lennon/McCartney.
Shawn and Trey, I listened to the album on CD and am ready to watch your video and hear your comments and rankings. This should be very exciting. I will also share my opinions
Good analysis of a great recording. Personally I would rank "You Can't Do That" a bit higher especially considering the following: it was in contention to be released as a single (before "Can't Buy Me Love" came along), John sang lead and played lead guitar, and Paul played the "cool" cowbell. Keep on rocking.
Fab job as usual, guys...like I've said before, this is my third-favourite Beatles album of the lot apart from Help! and Rubber Soul, and the listening party just re-confirmed how totally groovy this album is...I definitely know that 'I Should Have Known Better' and the title track are my Top Two on this one, and I think that 'If I Fell', 'Tell Me Why' and 'Can't Buy Me Love' would probably round out the rest of my provisional Top Five...but it's close, yes...?! Looking forward to the next livestream/listening party...in the meantime, Hwyl for Now...but ONLY for Now...!!!
Here’s a little fun fact. I’ll Cry Instead was originally supposed to be in the film, but Director Richard Lester chose Can’t Buy Me Love instead. And it was edited down to 1 minute and 49 seconds (I think) because on the US A Hard Day’s Night and the mono version of Something New has I’ll Cry Instead where you hear John sing the first verse again in the middle. I would have I’ll Cry Instead lower on my list just because it’s shorter and I feel like it’s a little incomplete. But this album is fantastic.
13 - If I Fell 12 - And I Love Her 11 - I'll Cry Instead 10 - Tell Me Why 9 - Can't Buy Me Love 8 - Things We Said Today 7 - When I Get Home 6 - Any Time At All 5 - I Should Have Known Better 4 - You Can't Do That 3 - I'm Happy Just To Dance With You 2 - A Hard Day's Night 1 - I'LL BE BACK
thanks for sharing and welcome to our world KBOB haha. As we always state just because a song is lower doesn't mean you don't think it is really good! People just want to take one song and overreact haha.
Another great ranking video Shawn and Trey. Definitely agree A Hard Day's Night as #1. This is where the Fab 4 transitioned from another good rock n' roll band to a really great pop rock group. My personal ranking of the album tracks would be: 13. "When I Get Home" - I always skip this one. 12. "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You" - I don't mind it. It's fine. I kinda like Harrison's monotone voice. 11. "Things We Said Today" - good song; bizarrely this is the only Beatles song that gets played where I work 10. "You Can't Do That" - another good song. 9. "Can't Buy Me Love" - great McCartney vocal performance. 8. "I'll Cry Instead" - like the country-tinged vibe of this song. 7. "I'll Be Back" - good closer for the album. 6. "Any Time at All" - the chorus is super catchy. 5. "If I Fell"' - great song. 4. "Tell Me Why" - another great chorus. 3. "I Should Have Known Better" - again, another great chorus, with that harmonica for the double combo 2. "And I Love Her" - one of my favourite early Beatles song. Beautiful song. 1. "A Hard Day's Night" - awesome opener. Just great pop rock with a hint of jangle pop in there.
Shawn and Trey, Great facts and great presentation. I agree that you rank the U.K. albums are the right way to go. The American versions are changed. We have the original American releases, one on United Artists label containing the songs in the movie and orchestral music, the mother on Capital label with the songs in the movie plus from singles releases also on the album. This is interesting because you guys ranked the bottom three exactly the same and ranked the top two exactly the same.. Then you both differ slightly on the rankings of the middle songs. Your ranking on this album is quite accurate for the most part. You both made accurate comments for each song and you guys are totally on point describing each song. You guys are right that this is a great album and the only Beatles album written by Lennon and McCartney and no other songwriters. I also agree that Lennon gets the MVP for this album dominating the tracks. John was on fire here. Paul only wrote three, but they are classics. I agree with your album rating,, Shawn at n9.0 and Trey at 8.5. My rating is an 8.75, in between your ratings. Before I list my track ranking I want to mention A few months before this album was released the Beatles did a concert at the Washington Colloseum in D.C. Some time ago the whole concert was posted on YT and I watched it. It was their first concert in America, and it is one of the most electrifying concerts ever. The electricity in the air was high intensity. Have you guys ever seen the whole concert ? Don't know if it is still available on YT. Just thought I'd mention that. You guys did a great job on this video. This is my ranking 13 I'm Happy Just To Dance With You - Strong melody and high energy Great rhythm guitar 12 You Can't Do That - Classic Beatles rocker, great singing by John 11 When I Get Home - A big beat high energy rocker 10 I'll Cry Instead - A very good solid song, sounds like John writing about himself 9 I'll Be Back - Beautiful melody with an acoustic sound, really good song 8 I Should Have Known Better - Great steady rhythm uptempo Pop Rock song, nice melody, cool harmonica7 7 Any Time At All - Classic Rock song, great vocal, great percussion, great energy 6 Tell Me Why - Classic song with the signature Beatles sound and style featuring great harmonies 5 Things We Said Today - Great song, great vocal, great melody, Paul is maturing as a writer 4 If I Fell - A very beautiful ballad, wonderful harmony and melody 3 And I Love Her - Classic beautiful ballad, haunting melody, I read about a poll years ago of the greatest love songs ever written. This song was rated 3rd greatest love song ever 2 Can't Buy Me Love - iconic Beatles song, lots of high energy and happy vibes in the music. In our childhood in the n1960's my brother and I and our cousin would put this record on the turntable and get so exited we would run around the house while the song was playing. Lol 1 A Hard Day's Night - Iconic Beatles high energy Rock song, a classic Great interchanging vocal parts sung by John and Paul
@@ReactionsToTheClassics Thank you Shawn and Trey, You guys did such a good job on this video that it inspires me to express my thoughts and comments. Listening to this album again and watching your ranking video reminds me of how great these songs are. These songs are so exciting and melodic and high energy. No other band comes close to this kind of level of songwriting and talent. It was a lot of fun watching you guys give your opinions and comments, even when you at times disagreed on certain song rankings. Lol It was entertaining.
@@evandavid2816 evan david, Thank you. Yes, this looks like the whole concert in Washington D.C. Coliseum. Wow, that's great that you found this. I've been trying to find it for the past couple of years. I think it is one of the most electrifying concerts of all time. There was so much excitement in the air. Thank you for sending me this link.
This one I have a soft spot for this one because I always remember seeing the movie for the first time. And watching the movie with my friend Michael in second grade.
It is very difficult to rank these songs as there really isn't a weak moment. I love the exuberance of "When I Get Home" but it is probably the lesser of the songs, for me. That is not to say it isn't worthy of being on the album. Yes, John dominates, but it is Paul's songs like "Things We Said Today" and "And I Love Her" that mark the real maturity. That is also true of the John led track "If I Fell". The more energetic tracks are not inferior, though, because they are the songs that best represent the overall feel of this great album. There really is something to be said for the exuberance and rawness of John's very youthful early more uptempo vocals, like on "Tell Me Why", "I'll Cry Instead" and "I Should Have Known Better", and it is something he would never quite recapture in later years. John just seemed to tear through these songs on adrenaline, and it makes for a very exciting listen. Yes, the title track and "Can't Buy Me Love" are worthy of being near the top, but "I'll Be Back" probably does, too. Definitely the best Beatles album up to this point, and no filler.
13. When I Get Home 12. I Should Have Known Better 11. You Can't Do That 10. I'll Cry Instead 09. If I Fell 08. I'll Be Back 07. Things We Said Today 06. Tell Me Why 05. Can't Buy Me Love 04. Any Time At All 03. A Hard Day's Night 02. And I Love Her 01. I'm Happy Just To Dance With You I guess I'm in the minority on that one haha
Talking about George writing number 13 here. He certainly improved as here comes the sun, something and while my guitar gently wheeps are arguably 3 of the best 5 beatles songs.
He actually didn't write - McCartney and Lennon stated they wrote it specifically for him but your overall point is correct. If you look at our rankings of The Beatles Top 100 songs you will see we rate those 3 very high. Thanks!
Definitely one of the toughest Beatles albums to rank. The quality of most of these songs is fairly close. Only one dud from me. I'll give it a shot. All of my Top 8 songs on this list are terrific. 9,10,11 are decent 12 is mediocre 13. weak for a Beatles track. 1. And I Love Her 2. A Hard Day's Night 3. I Should Have Known Better 4. Can't Buy Me Love 5. I'll Cry Instead 6. Things We Said Today 7. If I Fell 8. I'll Be Back 9. Any Time At All 10. Tell Me Why 11. You Can't Do That 12. I'm Happy Just to Dance With You 13. When I Get Home
AHDN is one of my favorite albums! The energy level is incredible and generally a very consistent album. I can't really do a full ranking, but the bottom two songs (which I do like, but just not as much as the others) would include: I'm Happy Just To Dance With You (To me, this is a very innocent, Hermans Hermits type tune, which has its place, and I've always liked the catchy "ohhh, Oh" bit. ) Tell Me Why--funny that this was one of my favorite songs when I was little. Now, it's ok, but just lacks something My Favorites: #1: A Hard Days Night: absolutely iconic song, with the intro chords, the energy & enthusiasm, and the guitar-solo which recorded at half-speed and then sped up for the recording; #2: Things We Said Today: I just love this song--lyrically mature, great beat and melody #3: Anytime At All: Again, incredible buoyant energy here #4: And I Love Her: a nice change of style, beautiful guitar riff contributed by George!
The father seems to be a hardcore Lennon fan, maybe even more so than a Beatles fan. Great jobs guys, although I agree with the son a lot more. If I Fell and And I Love Her are two of my favorite Beatles songs, and easily the best two songs on the album imo. Every time I here these two songs, I get shivers down the spine, and I don't mean it figuratively either.
Haha not even close. I am guessing this is the 1st vid you have watched so you just don’t know and are making assumptions because you don’t like where I rated Paul’s songs. We have reviewed every Beatles album and past masters and anthology and ranked all of their songs and several solo albums. Might want to check those out before making uninformed statements because you don’t like where I rated 3 songs. Peace
@@ReactionsToTheClassics No, I don't really have a problem with how you rated two of the Paul songs, only And I Love Her. In fact, I don't rate Can't Buy Me Love as highly as you do. My impression was instinctive, based on my interpretation of facial expressions, and body language. It wasn't even meant as a negative, just an observation. But I'll take your word for it, that I was wrong. I will heck out some of your other reviews when I have time. Peace!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics forgiven. It's a tough album to judge as you say. It's my 3rd fave album behind revolver and Rubber soul. Weirdly enough me and my brother did a very similar review to this one on his you tube channel for rubber soul
Absolutely no way I could rank these songs , it's just perfect pop start to finish . I read years ago it was the 1st LP with all songs written by the band , sounds right but I really dk . Good job , my list would change with every listen . Although Happy Just To Dance ... usually #13 .
Agree with Trey more If I fell Things we said today and And I love her are some of the best on this album . Any time at all I would have much lower . This album is miles better than their album a few months later Beatles for Sale which is riddled with covers and filler
@@ReactionsToTheClassics Yes I did. I just had to express my shock at the moment because I couldn't believe what I just heard. For me that song is right up there with other Paul songs such as I Will.
My favourite album of the Beatlemania era. It’s all killer, no filler. My top 3:

Beauty of the depth of their catalogue something for everyone. As far as being considered for a single we put zero stock in those things. Thanks!
Even though Ringo isn't on the album itself, technically, Ringo is almost the star of the movie, so it levels off, I'd say.
That's true, he is pretty funny in the movie!

Is this video at ua-cam.com/video/wXZ1SD1V0eo/v-deo.html the Washington concert you're referring to, Poet...? Interesting list, by the way...
Always look forward to your thoughts Poet! Really appreciate the time you took to share!
@@poetgb No problem, glad to help, yes...?
This one I have a soft spot for this one because I always remember seeing the movie for the first time. And watching the movie with my friend Michael in second grade.
Great memories! Thanks Jack!
HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE IMAGINE ALBUM!!!☮️❤️
Yes!!
Our lead Holstein had a nice sounding cow bell that was music to my ears. Lol
haha love it Melissa, you are a nightowl as are we haha
My favorites off the album include the title track, I Should Have Known Better, And I Love Her, and Can't Buy Me Love.
Good choices! Thanks Vincent!
Great insight and comment. Couldn't agree more. Thanks Jedikiah!

haha beauty of music and of THE BEATLES! Someone's worst can be someone else's best. Greatness!
no not really your #1 is my #2 and Tell Me Why is #1 for me
Talking about George writing number 13 here.
1. And I Love Her
2. A Hard Day's Night
3. I Should Have Known Better
4. Can't Buy Me Love
5. I'll Cry Instead
6. Things We Said Today
7. If I Fell

9. Any Time At All
10. Tell Me Why
11. You Can't Do That
12. I'm Happy Just to Dance With You
13. When I Get Home
Great list Rich!
You keep giving George bad songs and eventually he's gonna get fed up and start writing classic Beatles tunes.
Can't wait for you to rank Help.
Yep
AHDN is one of my favorite albums! The energy level is incredible and generally a very consistent album. I can't really do a full ranking, but the bottom two songs (which I do like, but just not as much as the others) would include:
I'm Happy Just To Dance With You (To me, this is a very innocent, Hermans Hermits type tune, which has its place, and I've always liked the catchy "ohhh, Oh" bit. )
Tell Me Why--funny that this was one of my favorite songs when I was little. Now, it's ok, but just lacks something
My Favorites:
#1: A Hard Days Night: absolutely iconic song, with the intro chords, the energy & enthusiasm, and the guitar-solo which recorded at half-speed and then sped up for the recording;
#2: Things We Said Today: I just love this song--lyrically mature, great beat and melody
#3: Anytime At All: Again, incredible buoyant energy here
#4: And I Love Her: a nice change of style, beautiful guitar riff contributed by George!
Thanks for watching MplsTodd! Hope you are well!
Love the vids
Really appreciate the kind words!!!! Thanks for watching MAXBACON!
Peace!
I should have known better is in my top two. Love that song. If I fell is number one. And anytime at all is number three. Amd I love her is four.
Thanks John
I'll be Back is my fave. Hurt me you put it at 9 lol
lol sorry Liam!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics forgiven. It's a tough album to judge as you say. It's my 3rd fave album behind revolver and Rubber soul. Weirdly enough me and my brother did a very similar review to this one on his you tube channel for rubber soul
Who is little old man .who is he .Paul's grandfather. That's not Paul's grandfather. Sense of humor Beatles had.
Very true. Thanks for watching Daniel!
He was very clean
Absolutely no way I could rank these songs , it's just perfect pop start to finish . I read years ago it was the 1st LP with all songs written by the band , sounds right but I really dk . Good job , my list would change with every listen . Although Happy Just To Dance ... usually #13 .
Yes we actually mention that in the review, all songs written by Lennon-McCartney, it is a great album. Thanks Stuart!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics No , I meant the 1st LP ever , by anyone . Do you know if that's true ?
oh I got you, honestly not sure on that one.
Agree with Trey more If I fell Things we said today and And I love her are some of the best on this album . Any time at all I would have much lower . This album is miles better than their album a few months later Beatles for Sale which is riddled with covers and filler
Totally agree with that take Dennis, not with agreeing with Trey more haha but mils better than BFS.
And I Love Her at number 7??!? Maybe number 7 if you're ranking every Beatles song but on this record it's in the top 3.
Well as I am sure you heard and saw we said all the tracks are great and most can be interchanged. Thanks
@@ReactionsToTheClassics Yes I did. I just had to express my shock at the moment because I couldn't believe what I just heard. For me that song is right up there with other Paul songs such as I Will.
