I'm sitting here going, "Put the pliers down for crying out loud. Use the non-magnetic pencil as a pointer." LOL Very informative videos by the way. ;)

These are awesome, can't wait for the two stages video!
Could you please include a brief explanation in what stage the distortion is created and what really influences the tone of it.
    Thank you

    Really enjoying your videos.
I think nickle is magnetic (not as strong as iron though). Cobalt and gadolinium are too.
Also i think that the original prototype valves were diodes which were essentially a light bulb with an anode plate. It would only conduct in one direction so the term valve i think was more like a heart valve which is a one way rather than an adjustable tap like valve.
This isn't the article i originally read but there's some info here.

Im not trying to correct you, I just thought you might be genuinely interested. Keep up the good work!

    Very well explained.
I bet you wished you'd put the pliers down and used the pencil for pointing around the circuit though! :-)

parts of this video are below the focus of the camera (spiral heater part) so they are effectively off the video.

ratio of grid wire diameter to spacing is not very important - the ratio of grid-cathode spacing to plate-cathode spacing is important, ratio of grid wire spacing to grid-cathode distance is important. Normally grid wire is an thin as possible for a receiving tube (limited by microphony, power handling and manufacturing convenience, field emission and some other factors for RF use). Very rigid wire is used, molybdenum or tungsten typically which can take high temperature
