Repair the bottom with resin and then use a glue block or even a faceplate. You can always fill the screw holes. Looks too nice of a piece to give up on. You can do it! 😅
Thank You Norma
Looking forward to this project coming back off the shelf! It has so much potential!
Thank You, maybe some day
First
Something is fishy here.
I totally admire it that you take us along for the ride no matter what happens. Kudos brother. It is a beautiful piece of wood with the veins showing.
Thank You Chet
It is always a pleasure to watch your videos Doug. Even for a non woodworker like me. What I think is so great is that you show everything, even when it doesn't work out and then also stay positive. Your humor made even a project like this successful. Thank you for another fifteen minutes of viewing pleasure and I wish you a nice weekend. 👍👍👍
Thank You Thank You
I absolutely love that you share both your successes and failures. Both are part of life, but I think a lot of people look at the works of artists and think that it's always perfection, and think to themselves, "I could never do that." Or they try something once and fail, and in comparing themselves to what other artists produce, they get down on themselves and give up. By sharing with us something that you gave your best to, and showing that despite your efforts it didn't turn out the way you wanted, you're showing others that sometimes things go wrong when creating art, but your attitude and reaction to failures is much more important. Besides, without trial and error, we would never learn. To me, the only true failures come when we don't learn from the things that go wrong just as much (if not more) than the things that go right. Thank you for continuing to share your process with us! Keep it up!
Thank You Ashley, none of us are perfect and it bothers me that some put up projects every week without issues, so I leave my mistakes and problem in for others to see, you know I'm not done with this bowl yet, it can not WIN !
Haha, always my favorite when people tell me to buy expensive items to pressure pots and cactus juice finish a bowl. Or to pour acetate and resin on it, not knowing we only get a certain amount of time to get these videos done or wait till next week. But in all seriousness, why didn't you have this SOS winner when we did that colab? I have some old cactus juice I could have used 🤣😂🤣😂
Oh and I love that you are helping me normalize the Shelf of Shame. (Currently the Shelf of Funyuns)
I do have cactus juice, that's up next, people just don't realize that it does not fill voids and will pretty much just do the same damn thing, I also have to pay for it and the resin is FREE ! lol my other issue was where to cook it, that's a big bowl and the shit that comes off a stabilized piece isn't something I want in my oven or dehydrator. there are other project on that shelf of mine too.
This is one of those times you could use that bowl holder mount that grasps the outside of the bowl. It should not have broke out. Use it for the hog out then swap to the inside chuck to do the finishing work. I liked it a lot too, maybe it might make another appearance as another turning where it gets put into something. The Extra resin overpour on the top really worked for it this time look wise. Maybe this can be done into a mosaic piece if it ever gets reused. The planet bits in resin, the wood sections that connect to the resin, and even just chunks of the wood could look spectacular into a mosaic. I do like the half planet like its the dark side of the planet.
Thank You, I do have a set of large Cole Jaws I plan to use in fixing it
😱😨 You're EARLY this week...
OK, NOW I'm conflicted...
I don't know whether to congratulate you for being Early for the first time in 4 weeks or yell at you for being a day early...
You sir, are an Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil bugger...
Well done...
😄😁😆😅😂🤣
You know I did that purposely for you !!!!!!!!! LOL Thanks again for watching
Actually my Analytics say that the most of my viewers are on Sunday evenings 6pm through 10pm, that's most of the reason I've started putting videos up on that day and time, I have to turn my channel around and that's when the crowd is home to watch. it's nothing personal, like this one isn't doing all that great compared to last weeks, but I took the hit just to mess with you, LOL
@@PohlBarnProductions Honestly I don't care when you put your videos up as long as you let people like Me, Myself and I know when to expect them...
Oh no!!! Maybe you can find a way to use this in another project?
It’s still awesome, Doug!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I has a plan ! Thanks Samantha
This has some Lovecraftian vibes to it... Kinda give me the idea to dye some vines purple and make tentacles.
Thank You Bil, I did like how the purple looked like veins running through the bottom of it
Oh no! I heard a weird pitch right before it flew. Darn it, this would have been really pretty. Nice try, Doug. 💜
Thank You Tracey
Cut up the woody parts and use the in a plater. Have the pieces arranged in to look good pick colours and make sure all wood is stable. Just an idea.
Bless our great republic!
Thank You Rob, I think I can fix it
What a bummer, buddy! But I know you can salvage some of it.
Thank You Billy
I admire your persistence. It is a beautiful piece of wood and the planets add a great touch
Thank You Pete
Hi Dougggggg!!!! Don’t give up, never give up!!!!
Thank You Robin, you know I have a plan
Turn it into a "cup and saucer" or "soup bowl and bread plate"
Thank You Thank You
Wowza! That scared the poo out of me! I didn’t understand what happened to the bottom that corroded that entire piece? It was cool with all the planets. You did everything you could, so maybe you can try again down the road. You are so talented!
I know the feeling…
I am sorry, Thanks for watching
Oh Doug that hurt! The wobble was more than the bowl could take. The colors were beautiful. I am sad it ended this way. Sometimes you have to walk away from a frustrating piece of work. Maybe it can be revisited at a later time. It was fun being in the workshop tonight. I hope you have a good weekend! See you on the next project!
Thank You Linda, walk away for a lil bit yes
...it was looking so cool...use a dremel, do some unique carvings on the base...turn down the top and it'll be fantastic...👍
Matt
Thank You Thank You, I found the missing pieces
Long project but ALWAYS a nice job. 🤙🏿Enjoy your weekend
Thank You Thank You
Haha. Some wood is just destined for the fire pit. It was looking amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Thank You Thank You, it's not in the pit yet
Ooooh! Oh, my! I'm glad you weren't hurt! That's gotta be frustrating! 😲❤
Thank You Victoria, that's why it's on the shelf of shame ! I'll get back at it soon
It is a shame Doug.. that would have been a gorgeous bowl... Have you tried stabilizing the wood in the pressure pot? Better luck next time... It's always a thumbs up from me Doug
Thank You Skip
Too bad that one didn’t work out as planned, Brother. Tina & I still enjoyed watching though👍 “Thumbs Up, As Always”😎
Thank You Steve, you know I have a plan to fix it
Doug, how does one know when to 'chase' the cut as opposed to drawing it towards yourself? Just reading the wood through experience?
Thank You Ben, really it just depends on how the cut is going, which way the grain is supporting it's self, if you are getting tear out then cut the other direction
Sorry it didn't work out Doug but great vid anyway. Thx for showing the steps. Always enjoy watching your stuff. Thx and take care.
Thank You Thank You
Wow, sorry it didn’t survive. It was looking so nice. Really nice planet colors and wood is/was so beautiful. ❤❤❤
Thank You Maddie, I'll get back to it soon
Oh well, “it is what it is”. You had to try, nobody likes waste. ( apart from the mega rich (Amazon) and governments ). It’s fantastic that you show us the bad as well as the good as it teaches us beginners what to look out for and what can go wrong. Sometimes very quickly. Keep ‘em coming Doug, looking forward to the next.🤞
Thank You Steve
To pretty a pcs of wood to give up. But understandable if you do. Put it on the shelf of “Still Thinking About”. Fave plate maybe? Glue Block?
I like that name better, I do have a plan for it, Thanks for watching David
Sometimes we make beautiful things.
Sometimes we make sawdust.
Damn shame too.
Thank You Steve, it's not over til it's over
That was going to be a great piece.... again. Just wasn't meant to be, I guess. Reminds me of the "lilac vase" from awhile back. As always, thanks so much for the time and video. Looking forward to what you do next.
Thank You Scott
Ah what a shame. Well done for showing it to us though Doug. Always good to try even if it doesn't always work.
Looking forward to your next project, chin up until next time. 👍
Thank You Jude
That's a shame, pretty piece of wood. But, you can't win them all. And you win the vast majority.
Thank You Karen
Damn that’s unlucky Doug. Like you say it is what it is. Probably rescuable if you slice the foot off and cut a hole in the bottom to remount. But that’s fir another day!! Shame Would have been a lovely planet bowl!! 👍👍 time to move on. ‘And the next contestant please!’
Thank You Pete, something like that is what I planned on doing
If I had known where it would fall, I would have put a rug on this place. Oh, oh, oh!!!
GooD)))))))
Thank You Meront
Sorry it didn’t work. It would’a been really pretty. I had this idea looking at your purple-blue resin. Take that color, eventually swirl to clear towards the middle, like smoke. Divide the bowl into 12 sections, and place a gold colored little statue of each astrological figure facing towards the inner part of the bowl. So, the outside of the bowl would be that dark purple/blue, and when you’d look inside the bowl, you’d see the figures, just appearing out of that swirling smoke. I know you’d have to place all of that while doing the pour, if it’s even possible? To get them to all be upright, float in the resin at the same height, seems like a logistical nightmare. You could premade them out of silicone molds, but the rest… eh, just an idea…😊
Thank You Lynda, I think I can fix it
Doug I had the same problem last weekend. I think if you attached it with a glue block you could salvage it. Recommend melting the hot melt glue in a frying pan and dipping. Not just a bead of hot melt glue glue. I think this is the making of a pretty bowl.
Thank You Have a plan, thanks again for watching
Greetings Doug, what a bummer! that would have looked awesome. Well done for the effort, been there got the "T shirt" as they say. Keep smiling stay positive.
Thank You Peter
Bummer! What a shame. G’job sticking with it!
Thank You Karen
Come on Doug I know you can fix it! It's being a while. As you know my friend walk away few days and viola! Looking forward to see da finish bowl!!! 💪🔥
Thank You Alejandro, yeah I know i can too, I just needed a break from it for a bit
It looks nice. There’s gotta be a way to repair it. It’s too beautiful to toss. Thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend!
Thank You Denise, I found the pieces and I have a plan
*Onwards and upwards onto the next project... as not everything we attempt to do, works out as planned... but try doing things another way, and eventually we shall succeed.*
Thank You Andrea
Can't win em all Doug, I was loving the way the bottom looked (before it broke) Oh Well, Next Time, It's gotta be better ;)
Thank You Thank You , so was I
They can't all be winners Doug! I have two ideas for it. Idea 1, Send it to Ken😀, Idea 2 Send it to Ken😀
Thank You Mikk, LOL Ken already commented why didn't I send him this one.
Hey, ya gave 'er the old college try! Can't ask for more than that. It's too bad. That is a beautiful piece of woof! Next time, right?!
Thank You Thank You
Hi Doug. Oh well. Have a great weekend. 😊😊😊
Thank You Rob
It happens to the best of turners. Put it aside have a beer 🍺 and go for the next one. You will find a solution for it another day .
Thank You Ahron, you know I have a plan to fix it already I just needed a break from it
I believe I'd just rethink the shape; mount it back on the lathe and make something out of it. Like you said about cactus juice, it's expensive... that's how I feel about resin so I try not to give up on anything I pour... even if it's a nightmare.
Thank You, I have rethought the shape, then I found the missing pieces, well they are both expensive I just have a never ending supply of resin so that's what I used. I understand not everyone has a resin sponsor like I do
What a bummer it was turning out beautiful, Doug. You could cut the bottom off and use a glue block to finish it out, maybe. Either way, it's always a pleasure to watch you create. Have a great weekend.
Thank You Jane
Real damn shame. It was a incredible piece of looking wood. But that beauty came with flaws making it nigh impossible to stabilize it and turn it. Frustrating. But up the the end it looked so wonderful.
Thank You Walter
So frustrating but Don't give up on it yet! Take a break, think some more, maybe reimagine the shape to take the new chips into account or repair with resin (since you said you have lots of resin). The wood figure is lovely and the planets are fascinating. I think it can still turn into something gorgeous.
Good luck!
Thank You Susan I have plan for it
That’s really a shame, it would have been sweet. Well, you could cut it into a bunch of pen blanks.
Thank You Lee, I think I can save it
It had potential, but maybe you should have stabilized the wood first! Live and learn!
Thank You Beatrice, really I didn't know it was that bad on the inside,
what if you cut off the pedestal and changed then worked the rest? Any reason to think that it might be more solid deeper in? It really is a pretty piece. Just adapt and move along? Still fun to watch, even if if didn't pan out. You keep me coming back for more!
Thank You Jeff, I think I can fix it
What a bummer 😢. It was looking so good. Gets to be very aggravating when things like that happen.
Thank You Scott, some times it is very aggravating
I missed the live feed but I'm sure you can cut the pedestal off and figure something out as a repair. You have the knowledge and technology!
Thank You Bryan, not gonna cut it off, I think I can fix it
Can't win them all, Love yr work.. Maybe a flat bottom bowl some day when you get bored..✌
Thank You Thank You
It’s always good to see the failures. I have a hanger queen that I just can’t bring myself to toss. But maybe the time has come.
Thank You Walt,
Can't win 'em all Doug. I do like the concept of the balls and I'm sure that you'll come up with something that incorporates them in another project.
Thank You Rich
That piece just did not want to happen for you. It's a shame , but these things happen. Maybe you could take it out for target practice? Better luck next time.
Thank You Pauline, it's not finished just yet
I love watching you work and im NOT a professional but im thinking you are turning to big of bites at a time.
Thank You
Saw something that I thought you might like to try. 3 group bundled with 5 each of bamboo sticks with color. Cut into 2 inch pieces and hot glued against a cylinder hallowed out and put on a wood base for the coolest light. Oh after you fill the 3 colors you put on a larger removable cylinder fill with an opaque color like black white or such
Thank You Shannon
Nice try Doug. You could cut it into smallish pieces and make a fragmented version of the same bowl and still turn the wood you were sent.🤔
Thank You Pia
They all can't be winners! That wood is gorgeous and I like the concept you was going for. Maybe down the road see if you can split the resin from the wood and try and use the resin in a project and when you get more cactus juice throw the wood in that and try again. Not even sure how to go about doing that but just a suggestion.
Thank You Chris, I have a plan
Gahh. It was looking so good. Maybe some time in Time Out will make it recant it's wayward ways v
Thank You, I do have a plan for it
Thanks for showing us that Not all turning come out as expected! Real life! On to the next turning.
Thank You Jim
It was a beautiful piece of wood and the resin was great. But somethings just aren't meant to be, I'm afraid. Maybe you can recycle it eventually, but no time soon.
Thank You Kathleen
Fun to watch but I can’t help but think it would have worked if you made your mortise deeper.
Thank You Michael, no matter what I was crushing the walls of the mortise with the jaws of the chuck, they did not stabilize well enough,I have a plan though, I think I can fix it
Aww, Man! I had high hopes for this piece. Great effort in saving it, though…👏🤨
Thank You George
Such a shame it didn’t work out but I’m sure it will become something one day. 🤓
Thank You Lisa
that wood looks cool, do you have a vacuum pot for stabilizing ,? i use cactus juice resin in my workshop, jack
Thank You Jack, I do I just would rather waste free resin than the cactus Juice I paid for, I have to see how I can mold it so I don't need to buy more
So sad. It’s so pretty too! Can you cut off the pedestal and flatten the bottom like a bowl with no pedestal? I’m not a wood/resin worker at all so I have no idea. A sad thing, since it’s so pretty
Thank You Patty, that is exactly what I plan to do with it,
I'm just starting to watch, and I forgot how the black and white moon looks so much like a monochrome Earthrise image
(bottom left at @ 0:30 )
❤
Thank You Victoria, I should probably make a planet making video since I've done the moons
So it decided to go for a spin around the laboratory. Instead of >turning< it you can >sculpt< it and see what you can make of it! Beauty can be found in non-symmetrical items too after all.
Thank You JoAnn, you know I can not let it WIN
That's a shame, it really was a nice piece of wood, the spalting had some awesome figure. Don't think of it as a failure, think of it as a candidate project to send to Ken in the future. 😁
Thank You Mark, Ken already asked for it ! LOL
Nothing wrong with a pot that looks old like it was found in the ruins of Egypt. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. 😁
Thank You, I think I can fix it
I hate it when that happens. Kinda bummer. But I know you can figure out something to do with it
Thank You Thank You, I'm sure I can fix it, just needed a brake from it for a bit
It was looking like a cool bowl. What do you think about the minwax wood hardner? So far it’s worked for me.
Thank You Ron, it works, I used it on the horse turds but it also dissolved my mold and leaked all over the place
I feel your pain Doug. You did a fantastic job to get to where you did with it. Like you say "It is what it is". It may be on the shelf of shame for the moment but that doesn't mean that is where it will remain. Considering what you had to work with to get to where you did with it is quite an achievement. I had one that spat out like that and broke the foot and the rim. It sat there until I cast a new foot and a new rim. It sat there for months collecting dust. The fact that it is on the shelf of shame and not in the rubbish bin speaks that subconsciously you are not going to let it beat you. It was looking like a mighty fine piece and I feel that you will give life back into it. Always a pleasure to watch your videos and to be a part of your channel. Thanks heaps
Thank You Bruce, I do have a plan for it, I just needed a brake
Doug, what a bummer mate I really thought it was going to turn out cool. You really have to try and save it buddy Im sure this is something that can be done after all your effort you have put into the piece. Good luck
Thank You Alan, I think I can fix it
Why don’t you use a glue block on the base like Sprague in Canada is always doing. I am not a turner…
I don't know, this is how I learned to do it, I suppose I cold
That beautiful bowl on the shelf of shame...!😭
On a lighter note, the hollowed out middle kinda makes me think of a black hole, and all the little nicks on the sides are like little bits of space debris.
Thank You Thank You
I was beginning to think this stuff only happened to me thanks for sharing I'm learning to try fix my mistakes instead of beating them into submission with whatever is handy 😢
Thank You Art, LOL yeah I have a plan for it and I think I can fix it,
Too bad. I'm sure it would have been beautiful.
Thank You Jean
Sorry it frustrated you. Would of looked nice. Have a good weekend
Thank You Erica
That had the prospect of being a really cool bowl. I hope you come back to it sometime in the future. It is too nice to leave on the shelf of shame. I always look forward to your videos and though this one hasn't worked out it was fun to watch the process.
Thank You Leslie, I think you'll see it again some time soon
Doug could you drill a deeper mortise say 1/2 too 3/4 of an inch as it is going to turn into an amazing bowl
I suppose I could, I think I'll put it into the cole jaws and see if I can straighten it out a bit if not remove the foot, stabilize it and then put a new mortise in
woulda been a real cool one! that wood is crazy looking and the planets are always awesome. i hope you found and saved the chunk of wood that came off so you can revisit it some day and torture yourself some more 😆
Thank You Dan
Could always turn into light fixture
Thank You Tim
Nice try. Why not recast and turn a different style? Maybe add more planets.
Thank You, many possibilities
Put it aside for a while. Then later fill in the broken out base with resin and begin again. I really like the bowl. It’s just really testing you…
Thank You Anna, that's the plan
What a shame Doug. There is no such think as a piece of wood that cannot be repaired. This had so much potential.
Thank You Jack
There's so many of these sorts of projects out there, makes me wonder how many have issues like this?
Thank You Tim, probably a good portion of them do but they edit it out
Oh man that would’ve been cool !!
Thank You Bruce, it's still gonna be
Love the way you share the whole process with us... another great video 😊❤
Thank You Heather,
The colors were looking awesome. It is too bad the wood didn't hold up.
Thank You Jason
put it on cactus juice maybe can take the pumpkiness out of that gorgeus piece of wood.
Thank You Carlos,
It’s pretty cool looking to bad I would discard it to the firewood pile after I had a few choice words that’s so aggravating Ayer all the time and work oh well it happens I lost a tenon today but remade it put wood hardner on it and so far so good
Thank You Jim, I'm not finished with it just yet
