I cut this piece of apple crotch wood around 2 years ago. I left it to dry as I do with most of my wood but unfortunately some massive cracks opened up both at the top and bottom. As I haven't turned much apple wood I wanted to start turning it and see if I could remove the cracks and make the replacement parts. I used some spalted beech to drill out the cracks and make the piece stand out.
The piece has been sanded to 10000 grit and finished with sanding sealer and wood wax.

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.
Wow!! A beautiful work of art you have created!! Well done!!
Just beautiful, very, very beautiful. ♥

Hermoso trabajo, muy creativo!!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
You have inspired me to try to add a butterfly of spalted beech to a large maple vase that has cracked.
Sounds wonderful. Send us a picture when it's finished.
Beautiful vase. I really like the spalted Beech discs, they go so well with the character of the Apple wood. Congratulations and best wishes on your own web site. I know a craftsman/artist of your caliber will do very well with your own website.
And I can barely saw a piece of wood . You are exceptionally talented
That was great! Thanks for sharing. It gave me a few great ideas.

@@HarrySmithWoodturning, vases bowls, boxes, just love the effect of the disks inlayed and then turned so that it is part of the primary wood. Good stuff.

Thank you very much Stephen! Should I do another vase like this? 😁👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning definitely, your work is exceptional.👍
Gorgeous! Striking! The spalting in the beech is amazing. The apple wood turned out to be a great choice because it threw you a curve ball and your response was intuitively perfect. I saw a vid last night where a specific type of maple was used (can't remember the name). It didn't have an obvious grain but when it was cut or turned it shimmered with light when the piece was moved. I'd never seen anything like it. That would be brilliant in this application either as the vase itself or the additions...of whatever size or placement.
Congrats on the website It's beautiful. (I sent you a private email through the website.)
Beautiful and fascinating piece Harry :)
Thank you very much Amber! Should I do another vase like this? 😁👍

Thank you very much! Should I do another vase like this? 😁👍
Yes do it. Cheers
Well done on the website Harry, I would just move originals down below so it isn't split on two lines.
I believe you're the only turner that I've seen that rubs the finished piece with wood chips. What does that do?
BEAUTIFUL ❤️
Thank you very much Madeleine! 😁👍
Like the vase and also the website.
Thank you very much Andrew! Should I do another vase like this? 😁👍

Thank you very much Patti! Should I do another vase like this? 😁👍
Well what is it. Pretty
I took up your challenge and guessed you’d mend some apple crotchwood with spalted beech and make a vase. My prize??
Where do you get your name plates?
I was kind of hoping for a lamp.
Guessing: you are making a vase or a bowl.
