In the song Johnny said we were losing 100 men a day. He was talking about Vietnam. We got casualty reports every day on the news during that awful war. Many of us have friends whose names are on that wall. A lot was going on in the 60s. But it was a time of growth for this country.
I believe he said we lost 100 men a week, not a day. Still way too many.
Yeah- I was going to say the crowd cheered at that point because he referenced the Vietnam war and their was a lot of anti war sentiment and frustration at that time especially with the young people.

This was my grandmother’s most favourite artist and Elvis was 2nd. She had a one sided love affair for Johnny that died the day she died at age 94. She saw him 10 plus times. Every time I hear him sing I think of my grandmother and that brings a smile to my face. Thanks for sharing.😊
Johnny is kind of his own genre.
It's really a great song. And he was known as " the man in black".
Later recordings are better because he got the wording down better. But considering he wrote it so fast it was amazing. But as he perfected the lyrics it rolls off the tou he better. Pretty cool seeing him perform so soon after thinking of it.

To the best of my knowledge Johnny is still the only person enducted into the country music, song writers AND the rock & roll hall of fame.
He was also the impetus for the great Kris Kristopherson writing a couple of his best songs.
Why he made the point of saying you people is that this song was introduced at a concert at a college campus. I'm not sure which but he learned a lot there how students felt and listened to them.

Great song, STILL brings tears to my eyes, shows the social politics he was into not just "good time country music", being from the UK i was never into Country music until i discovered his 2 live prison records, now i have around 30 of his albums.
I grew up listening to pop and rock and didn't care for any other music. As with age I have broadened my musical tastes and come to appreciate great music regardless of labels. Where have all of the great singer/songwriters gone.
The reaction about losing “100 fine young men” was referencing the boys that we were losing in the Vietnam war at the time of this performance.
Your range of types of music is incredible. This song gives me chills. I don't feel Like it's a protest song but a song for the weak and vulnerable.

He was known as the Man In Black since he always wore black. I had also heard that wearing black reminded him of the sinful life he lived before coming to know the Lord and he needed that reminder everyday of the sinful life he didn’t want to go back to and wearing black was a constant reminder. Not sure if it’s true but that’s what I always heard.

I myself discovered this song only last month and was blown away by it, its not as if I hadn't heard Jonny cash songs it's just for some reason this escaped me, believe me I listen to the guys music now, just love that train on a track rhythm which appears and seems basic but breaking it down I'd say genious

Johnny’s songs all told a good story. They are never just about throwing a bunch of words into the lyrics. He is a legend from the great state of Arkansas.
...Johnny was part of the 'historic' photo of the MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET... Johnny Cash, Elvis, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis(photo is on the wall in Sun Records on Union Ave in Memphis.....also, though they didn't know each other, Johnny Cash and Elvis spent their teenage years not 40 miles apart! Johnny in Dyess, AR, and Elvis in public housing near downtown Memphis, TN.
They were responding to what he said about losing men in the Vietnam War. This is real country music.
Id love to see you check out "Jackson" and "Hurt" by him. Jackson was with his wife June in their early years. Hurt was his last video, June appeared in it, but she passed away shortly after, in May 2003. Johnny followed her in September.

He had a drug addiction all his life because he blamed himself for this brothers death at a sawmill where his brother was sawed almost in half because he ran off as a little boy and left his brother alone. His father also blamed him.
If you like this ADogg, you should give At Folsom Prison a listen. Really think you'll dig it. Then check out Johnny Cash at San Quentin 1969. Think this was a BBC production. Shows how Johnny had fans of all races black, white, and hispanic.

If you want to hear something that is a heart jerker by another great storyteller artist whose career overlaps some with The Man In Black, and in fact the interesting thing is, Merle Haggard was an inmate I think on even more than one occasion when Johnny Cash was doing some of his prison shows, like this one:
Check out these two short songs by Merle Haggard. The studio cuts are fine and probably preferred by me, but whatever man, however you listen to it.
Before he finally got out of prison and really made a name for himself, Merle actually did spend quite a lot of time in detention from an early age, including juvy stuff before that, you know like is so common even today. But Johnny Cash was one of his heroes and it's so fascinating to me that in the end, Merle Haggard became a country legend himself.
I've seen him live and I've been able to speak with him and visit with him some. Back in the early 1980s. I have nothing but incredibly high respect for both of these men. So anyway, the two songs I'm talking about, and I'll just grab a link to one of them I guess, is Sing Me Back Home. It's about a man on death-row his time has finally come. He has but a simple request and it turns out to be a musical one.
The other one is called Branded Man, and it just talks about the difficulty of negotiating life once you are one of those lucky ones that gets out and gets to reinvent your life and start over and try to do better, or maybe you probably shouldn't have been incarcerated that long in the first place, who knows.
