It was a time in America 1968 and several years after that we were having an awakening to injustices in our country, the Vietnam War, Civil Rights movement, hunger in America, etc., I pray somehow we will find our way back to caring about others, instead of hating others. Thank you for your reaction.

To ella5319, I saw your comment on the reaction to the Johnny Cash song "Man in Black", and I couldn't agree with you more. What has happened to us in this country? There is such a "me against you" mentality in this country, and it is frightening! I pray that we can stop this before it is too late.

@@ronniesimmons6827 I pray for America, we can't lose this country that generations have worked, fought & died to leave it a better place for the next generation, we seem to rather want to tear it down than share it with our fellow Americans.

“ Each week we lose 100 fine young men” he’s referring to the Vietnam war.

This was the height of the Vietnam war, 1968. There were riots, protests on campuses across the country. The Civil Rights Movement was gaining speed, the country was in turmoil. This song touched the nerve of the times.

Very thoughtful reaction from you. Johnny had not always been whiter than white but he always stood up for the down trodden, prisoners and also the Native Americans. He wasn't afraid to say what he thought.

Drug deaths and Vietnam .... you couldn't really label him. He was socially very liberal, active in Native American rights and campaigned for prison reform. However, he was fiercely patriotic, proud of his Country and his faith ...

I always appreciate how Johnny Cash can illustrate that one can be all three things: socially liberal, patriotic, and religious, and above everything else an American. He was always himself, and a credit to his country.

This Song came out in "71" a little after Elvis did "If I Can Dream" & "In The Ghetto" "68-70" (Elvis and Johnny Cash were Friends).
This was during the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.

Johnny Cash and Elvis knew each other, recorded together and there’s footage of them impersonating each other (only audio of Elvis) you might enjoy

Yes, the Vietnam War was in full swing at the time. To add a little more perspective, everyone had called him The Man in Black for years already by this time. His catalogue of great songs is massive. One Piece at a Time, Folsom Prison Blues, and A Boy Named Sue are a great place to start down the rabbit hole.

Cash came from abject poverty. He started picking cotton with his family at five. At 8 or 9 his brother died in a really nasty work accident, for which he felt guilty to his death. He was an addict for much of his life, and spent many a night in prison. He knew hard times, and he would still wear black.

When he wrote this the Vietnam war was raging also civil rights was raging so much of this song had to do with both of those topics, along with just being decent to each other.

Vietnam war. The lyric God on their side is a reference from Bob Dylan’s antiwar protest song God on Our Side

Johnny Cash always stood up for the underdog.
He was referring to the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War and hungry poor population in a recession economy.
He believed that prisoners were people that made mistakes but weren't necessarily bad people.
I highly recommend his song Ira Hayes.
It's about one of the Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima in WWII.

Vietnam was is full swing. More and more young men were being drafted. The body count was rising each day. I remember watching the news and hearing on a regular bases what the body count was that week. I was 10. The war was in your living room each night between 5:30-6:00. Certain photos and film footage is seared in my mind. You just can’t unsee some things.

Johnny Cash has so many good songs. Thank you for this reaction. If you want more links, I can try find some of his performances for you. I love Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. Such iconic musicians from the 50's, and 60's, and beyond. Absolutely love your Elvis reactions too. ❤

What happened then, when the song was written, was the Vietnam War. Johnny Cash has always been an anti-establishment "man of the people".

He's talking about Vietnam as far as I know.. This was a 60's song I think.. but it can go today.. What's happening in the Gaza strip right now.. What happened 9/11.. this is a gripping/timeless song.. unfortunately. I feel like we don't learn by mistake as a world population. Kinda scary.,, Thank you for this reaction.. younger ppl need to hear this.. And yes.. Johnny Cash made many mistakes in his lifetime but he got himself together and put a message into this world we should listen to..

JR was such a great songwriter.
Another serious song from the Vietnam era that you should react to is "Singin' in Viet Nam Talkin' Blues".
A great funny song, and he wrote a lot of them, is "Strawberry Cake", you might give that one a listen too.
My absolute favorite JR Cash song, though, is "A Singer of Songs"
Thank you for reacting to JR's songs.

It's vietnam. People dying in an unjust war and I like to think that he's not only talking about american soldiers, but american allies (aka south vietnamese) as well. maybe even "adversaries". Might be a stretch.

Love your reaction yep he was not only a great artist, but Human as well, bit also human as you heard in Hurt, which also showed how he felt about making human mistakes made him feel. Tells alot abput a person. Yea im not sure but the part about believing the lords on their side in my mind i think it also refers to humans fighting wars about religion and still are, they fight thinking gods on their side. Thinking their religion is the only way to god. The Great John Lennons Imagin is another song stating without religion we would have alot less killing in God name, i lije lennon was saying theres no God but its not hod who srperated the races amd religions it was man. The bible has was wrotten sto loose interpritation on purpose so it can teach you to think for yourselves, do whats in your heart by what the bible say Jesus and god did in times of people in need or someobe not popular or lije someone else to treat people as you want to be treated. Ive never read a verse saying that certain color, or faith or $ status was in or out nor sexual prefrences. But it did tell how he helped people especially the ones miss guided or ill or poor and i believe that if you follow whats in your heart, we all no right from wrong.
What i have seen in the Bible is there is but one judge you maker.
And there are those commandments ect but it foesnt say if you break one your going to hell. JESUyaught to learn from our human mistakes and ask God to forgive you those mistakes . The one thong ive read that will keep you put of heaven is tp not believe in god and to outright denounce him. Ypu will not be welcomed into his Kingdom .
So that what Lennon was saying its all the human things that we figgt about seperate religions , countrys we also seperated, and things including land that. But do what you think is right as a human and how ypu woukd like yourself or ypur family treated. Before. And there is bad and good in every group like relgions that one person takes and goes Rouge and makes up crap and starts his own versions and gets the weak and lost looking for a meaning in liglfe to folliw them, before ypu know those groups have their followers calling " the hunter" of the weak to join, yheyre calling him god. Now your a cult . Like some Arab friends told me after 911 no where in oyr bible does it say kill pople, vand o ha e fpund almost all religions have the sMe basic guide as pur and the same God just by another name. Samr stories ect some have adapted things from folk lor like what to eat on certai. Days ect however theyre all doing tjose small things to show how much they love God .
Just as we all speak diffrent languages and have our customs why if someones diffrent everyone freaks out learn from them make them your friend hang out, music and love of family and illness and pain in peoples faces are all things Humans have and dont need to verb. Undestanding just human understanding.
But with all the seperations that humans have put up to be better or fight with a group or profile non of thats in the bible. Its commons sense.
I know gping to church you and a friend can be thete same service same minister same lesson hes speaking on or verses . .and we can come out of there with diffrent opinions on what it taught me and her a diffrent lesson . But i believe that was the purpose 8s so we can figure out on our own with a few set rules on how to prixceed in life and be the best version of ourselves that god aprive of. And how to find a way to communicatecand get along with humans unlike us and treat them as they are our family as we all come from adam and eve.
