Very sad, but people who ignore clear warning signs really have nobody to blame but themselves if things turn out in a bad way. In fairness, people do much dumber stuff than standing behind jet engines! I hear there's some place (a beach in Australia I think) where people are warned not to go bathing because of monster crocodiles. But incredibly some people just _ignore the signs_ - sometimes with horrible results...

@@danimaybThey can't usually point the runway into the wind. And traffic dictates what way you take off or land. Planes take off and land with tailwind every day. Depends on the aircraft but 30 knots is usually the limit. So you'd be landing 30 knots faster, 160+ knots (320 ph) instead of 120-135 or so.
But almost always it's coming from the side. The most dangerous is a change in direction (windshear). Say you approach with a 20 knots tailwind and it suddenly turns to a 20 knots headwind. Your nice and perfect 130 knots are suddenly only 90 knots, way below stall speed of a big jet and you fall out of the sky. There are alerts of course and on a "windshear" warning a go around and windshear escape maneuver had to be flown by law.
the ones landing have engines on extremely low power, of course, so imagine them on maximum thrust output, without slow gradual acceleration, and it just starts blasting and accelerating at speeds surpassing hurricanes, or even some of the strongest tornadoes.
Never underestimate the level of stupidity in people.

@@al56890 That's why there are signs. Most people don't cross the road in front of a car, no need to have barriers around each road. And most people don't cross that beach when a liner is approaching. You step in front of a car an you die. Planes are quite similar. Ask the Japanese coastguard plane that parked on the touch down zone of an approaching A350. Nothing remotely aircraft like remained of that plane and it was big. It's just described as small because the A350 is giant.
Why? Why do people do this knowing how dangerous it is??? I can't fathom the amount of stupidity in these people....
Kind of like skydiving. For the adrenaline rush. Since this was a different country and I was on a cruise, I chose to stand on the beach and experience it though. I did not want to die or be seriously injured on vacation. However, I do see the appeal. I've been skydiving 4 times, knowing the risks. This was a case of bad judgement, not stupidity.
It's not an accident when you see warnings signs and still choose to ignore them.
When you know you can't keep people away and you are aware that people can get badly injured by the concrete blocks, they can put something in front of it. There are a lot of less intelligent people walking on this world, and they won't go away soon.

Well, to be fair, flying cars isn't the best idea. A car could malfunction and send someone too far up and get the driver killed, and if there would be highways in the sky, you would have to have society learn how to adapt to such a change, which could take years, so we would have to master building flying cars years beforehand, and when most of humanity is rich enough to buy their own flying car, what do we do with all the roads and highways in the world? lol

I was nearly burned to death standing 20 feet behind a Learjet engine. Not only is it extremely windy but the wind is scalding hot as well. I wasn't blown anywhere because my body was pinned to another plane. It roasted my back.

You can’t fix stupid
I used to work at the airport loading, unload and refueling aircraft. They called us ramp agents. Jet blast was nothing to take lightly. The ramp (loading / unloading / refueling areas for the aircraft) was generally a very hostile environment and you ALWAYS had to be alert as one mistake could cost you your life. There were tugs flying about not obeying the lanes or rules it was easy to step infront of one and get flattened. There were engine tests and because of that we always had to ensure that we SECURED the cargo door in the open position. One employee didn't do that and the engine was fired up for testing and the cargo door was caught in the thrust whacking the man in the face knocking him out instantly. He was out for several months recovering.
As far as jet blast? It's nothing to take lightly, it can easily throw a human being several yards and even over high objects. Even more dangerous is that it can pick up objects, rocks, rubber, and other debris and turn it into a projectile to make a very bad day for you..
Lesson: Don't f*ck around with commercial jets.. ..they're not toys nor are they designed for your personal amusement.

If they remove the concrete walls the beach would be carved down because the sand would be continuously blasted onto the sea.
They could place deflecting barriers in place of the current fence, so that the ground level blast is directed 45 degrees up.
She was killed by the concrete block, not the jet engine.
She fully expected and came there for the engine. If it wasn't for the block, the fall would have been harmless.
“Can they get rid of the wall” maybe the better solution is to not stand behind a plane taking off

I understand how traumatic this was for The family of this woman and I'm sure the people around when it happened as well, but this is something those people chose to do. There is plenty of time for them to walk to a safe spot and get away from the blast of the jet engines. Instead they chose to stand behind it. It's like people who do cliff jumping into the ocean and then get mad when someone has an accident and hurt themselves.
It's horrible, extremely sad, and heart wrenching. But at the same time people need to remember that they're not invincible and to be careful in the situations they put themselves in.
And when they are in trouble because of this stupid clif jump that they know is dangerous, others must risck their lives to safe them….
