What makes it seem that it's not a "full" 3D game is a lot of limitations to make calculations faster so the game could both fit and run well enough in DOS machines, but it's by no means 2D. I think the massive lag you get in non-invulnerability mode might be because of GZDoom's dynamic lights feature; it makes it so fireballs and rockets illuminate the environment. In invulnerability mode, the lighting is forced to fullbright, so the lighting calculations do nothing. Massive props to the Civvie reference, though.
That makes sense. My guess was that enemies don't fire projectiles while invul is active, but that wouldn't explain the lag going in and out with the blinking as the effect wears off

Once the invul starts going away all the lighting effects reenable and tank the framerate. Playing it in vanilla wouldn't have this issue as all the lighting effects are from the GZDoom port itself.

The reason why the Chex Quest ones work so well with the doom textures is probably because the chex quest textures and enemies where built overtop of the doom ones, while the hexen and heretic enemies and texture where built from scratch

Hey grayfruit, the designer of the nuts series has made a myriad of other works you should really check out! Equinox (the one which the sign references, Grove, and the mucus flow which is the map 24 of a wad called community chest 2. Another cool tidbit is that the music for nuts 3 was actually composed by the designer of the level, BPRD. Most levels of his have great tracks such as the previously mentioned wads. You should really check em out sometime!

I think I know what happened with the Chex Warrior enemies. ZDoom has an enemy called a “scripted marine” that’s essentially a clone of Doomguy in gray armor, that can switch between different weapons if a map script tells it to. Somehow, you tricked the game into spawning a group of scripted marines instead of whatever the intended entity in that room was supposed to be, and they used Chex Quest sprites because said game happened to be the last one on the stack. Scripted marines aren’t used in anything official, but they’re designed for use in custom maps and I’m sure there’s at least one WAD out there that does (intentionally) use them.
the reason why the graphics weren't clown vomit when you loaded doom 2 with chex quest, is because they both use the same color pallet not to mention chex quest is basically a tc mod for doom 1, like you can still access doom 1's episode 2-4 levels if you cheat

@@Wheagg that is not really true... here some examples with DOOM2 at 2 different resolutions: 640x480: i.imgur.com/dOYgbIa.png 4K: i.imgur.com/qve1Hhx.png (you can literally count the bolts on the steel wall in the hallway) so yes, like with any 3D game, a greater resolution means you can see finer details at greater distances, and overall lines of polygons become smoother due to the smaller pixels. there are defineitly diminishing returns after a while, but "480p" sets the bar way too low, nowadays i'd say the difference between DOOM/Quake at 1080p and 4K is still noticeable, but anything above starts to become too small to notice.

I can explain why the Doom/Chex mix was tame compared to other wads. It's because out of all the Iwads, Chex is mostly just a sprite and texture swap, infact if you're a really keen eye, you'll notice that they even use the same palette, hence why none of the textures or enemies have corrupted appearances, instead just switching to their native graphics as opposed to the s and random replacements. If you do this again, mix Doom 2 to Hexen, maps like Map02 are a joyride in that mix due to the fact that the co-op spawns become enemies.
I know you said you wouldn’t do many more doom wads after this, but I implore you to try Reelism2, it’s a hilarious mod that still manages to have really fun gameplay

One thing I’d love to see Greyfruit play is TimeTripper by Halley Labs. It’s a doom 2 mod with 20 or so levels and a unique song made by Halley Labs for each level. All of the songs are really good, but the levels are way difficult. It’s a bit archvile heavy throughout, but I found it really fun.
DOOM is literally one of, if not the most, videogames of all time. This is how Boomers see modern videogames like Cruelty Squad,like it's GOT elements of an old videogame, but it's just too much.
Probably Heretic/Hexen use different color output in the og engine, and GZdoom can't pick more than one color space even if theoretically they both output to modern 24 bit color, because the devs never thought it would need to use both. Edit: also the choice seems to be based on the map rather than the wad that's loaded first.
