Holy shit, Super Meat Boy Forever has a cutscene that references the opening of this game (1:56) really closely when you're entering the Clinic area. I always assumed that it was referencing an RPG or something given the sword they give him, but I guess it was from this instead. Neat!
@@thegloop5018 thank you for spoiling any joy I might have had from the above comment, that is a set of words that should not be uttered in any mortal realm
Hey Fellas make sure you watch this video in a 60 fps UA-cam quality setting, The game uses flickering a lot, so at 30 fps you'll get things like half the water disappearing or the character becoming invisible when hit.
I love this game, especially how you do more damage if you're just right up in their face. Game lags the fuck out when you do it, but the damage is crushing.
Wow this game's Fantastic and absolutely insane! So many awesome moments, I especially love how Axel's ai starts playing mind games during the mech fight.
I am so happy to see that other people are finally appreciating this game for what it is. I have been a fan of this game for nearly twenty years at this point, and it's always been a game that no one has heard of up until recently. Yes, the game is very derivative of other games, but it really stands on its own as a super fun and challenging experience. The move set is fairly complex, the game rewards risky play, and the mechanics never stagnate. Not to mention how hard the entire soundtrack slaps (I would argue even more so than sonic music, fight me). Furthermore, Sparkster absolutely needs to be added to smash, I agree with you on that. This is now my favorite Grayfruit video, thank you very much for playing this game and spreading awareness for this underrated gem.
Is saying Sparksters character design being derivative of Mega Man's not like saying one wizards character design is derivative of the other just because they wear similar robes? If all it takes to be derivative is to wear blue and also have a helmet then originality is dead.
13:16 - Seems like it's meant to be the boss at the top of the tower at 6:00 it at least got quite the resemblance and the surrounding would be fitting

Mr. Fruit, at 54:00 they are caught in a flood/river, they are moving on the X and Y axis freely is because for some reason the game views it from a weird 3D angle. That's also why you bounce around, because the water is keeping you afloat.
I remember watching my two older teenage brother and cousin try to beat hard mode. They would trade the controller off whenever someone lost a run. It took them, like, a month of attempts before one of them finally beat it.
I don't have to imagine. I figured this game the f OUT at like 8 years old. No game genie. No cheats. No pillows. Just figuring it out. ...couldnt beat the mode where you die in one hit, though....
Original Japan version: "We like it when our players have fun, but we know you like a challenge, so we have this hard mode for you if you really wanna take on a tough challenge, but normal mode is not a problem either. Also, we have a level select available if you really wanna use it." American version: "Fuck you and your joy, give us your money and torture yourself for our amusement. Wanna play the original intended difficulty? You must be a baby, you don't even deserve the real ending to the game! We're also gonna juice up all the bosses and enemies so that you really are unhappy trying to fight them." Gee, I wonder why this game did so horribly outside Japan...
Grayfruit, your videos are great because even after your soothing voice puts me to sleep, I end up watching the videos twice (or more) for your jokes, edits, and gameplay. Thank you.
Upping the difficulty out the ass was actually surprisingly common in North American releases, since they were expecting you to rent the game a lot, and they didn't want you to just finish the game in a couple days, return it, then never pay for it again. The two examples that come to mind are Castlevania 3, where the enemies do a lot more damage in the latter stages, and Contra: Hard Corps, where they removed the health bar and continues in the American releases.
This is the video where I finally subscribed. Longform playing Street Fighter 1 hooked me, but seeing this reeled me. I felt much the same when I rediscovered this game.
You actually shouldn't keep it charged like that. A rocket stab or spin does slightly more damage than a slice or projectile, but you can pump out the damage so much faster with normal attacks. Plus, if you hold the charge too long, it makes you explode, like what happened to Gray in the lava stage.
As someone who has genuinely beaten each game 5 non-conescitive times (on a fuckin' 3DS by the way... worst mistake of my life) it'd be torture. I could say dialogue WORD-FOR-WORD, I love this game so much, but MAN that'd be hard.
One of my all time fav games, and some of the best music and art you'll get in a Genesis game. The track for level 7 still sounds great even as a MIDI. Just an epic effort from Konami. Derivative be damned! 😂
I wholeheartedly believe that the slowly grinding for mastery that happens in older retro games like this has had a reawakening in the roguelike genre, I get the same feeling when I play an old shmup as I do when I play a newer roguelike such as risk of rain or binding of Isaac and I think those parallels are pretty nifty.
