Etude, Op. 10, No. 3, Chopin (Early-Intermediate Piano Solo) Alfred's Adult Level 2

  • TEACHER DEMO. This beautiful etude is on p. 90 of the Alfred's Adult All In One Course Level 2. This arrangement is based upon the theme from Frederic Chopin's Etude, Op. 10, No. 3. Chopin is from the Romantic Period and can be played with much more freedom regarding the tempo and dynamcs than you would with music from the Baroque Period. "Expressivo" being the key word.
    Be sure to bring out the melody in the Right Hand. You may notice that my fingering is a bit different than what is suggested. (I have a small hand.) Also, I prefer to change the notes a tiny bit in measures 3 and 11. On the 3rd beat of the measure, I add a Bb into the RH chord, and in the LH, I play a C rather than the E. I prefer the harmonics this way since it sounds closer to the original to me.

I assume if someone wants more detail, they will read the description below the video. I always try to mention if I've made any adjustments to the written music which I did a little bit with this song. Enjoy the Chopin, Norma

    I love this and so beautifully played. There is not one video of yours about which I could not say the same thing. I am in my senior years - just having taken up the piano about 2 years ago but not with a full time teacher . I can only afford community college which is in a group and sometimes classes are cancelled. I try to learn theory (which I think is so important) and I go to special sites to learn what I can about fingering, reading music etc but for the sheet music in my Albert's series, I constantly return to you because the way you play touches my heart. Thank you so much for all your time and effort in helping music lovers like myself to get ahead . My mother was a concert pianist but unfortunately never had time to teach me no matter how much I begged and which I do understand because she was extremely busy but I do remember the beautiful music she played for us at home when we were children and that is where my love of the piano was born. To late for me to be anything but basic but at least my hands are on the piano keys and I can make music of my own. Thank you so very much for all you do.

      Thank you so very much for your kind words of praise and encouragement!! Makes the many hours spent creating the channel worthwhile. So glad that you have found the videos helpful in your musical journey. And yes, there is worth and value to having your hands on the piano keys and making your own music and "basic" can still be beautiful and enjoyable. There are more and more beginners now in their "senior years". You are not alone in your endeavors. My current oldest student is 75 and she started at the age of 68. My 84 year old mother was regularly spending 5 hours a week at the keyboard renewing her skills from childhood while using a music app on the ipad called "Piano Maestro" that many of my students have enjoyed. And keep researching all of the many sites that the internet has to offer to build your music theory understanding and knowledge. An endless supply of learning opportunities awaits us with the many resources available at the tip of our fingers. It's wonderful to be learning new things and stimulating our minds, creativity, emotions, physicality, etc. Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment! --Norma

      @@92pianokeys40 Sometimes I wonder if I’ve gone too quickly. Like, yeah, I’ve made it this far, but maybe it’s possible I’ve done so much in so little time that my brain can’t process everything well enough for where I’m at? I feel like my biggest problem is reading and playing simultaneously. It’s very hard for me to process notes quickly, though I can read them fine normally. @@Stint. If you have only been playing the piano for 7 months, I wouldn't expect your note reading/playing skills to be very developed yet. It takes time to build good sight-reading skills, but patience and persistence will pay off in this area.
      It is good to spend a portion of your practice time just reading music, not with the goal to perfect a song but simply for the exercise of reading and playing notes.
      There are leveled sight-reading books that you can use for that purpose or simply finding music that is at a comfortable reading level for you and then read and play ALOT of it.
      There are also several great programs that you can use if you want to "game-ify" your sight-reading skills. "Piano Maestro", "Simply Piano", "Piano Marvel" to name a few.
      Another idea is if you can find someone who plays the piano also and is willing to get together regularly to sight-read duets. It just makes it a lot more fun and provides the added challenge of keeping a consistent beat to stay together.
      Hope that gives you a few more ideas as you continue to build your note reading/playing skills. --Norma

    this song is kind of addictive :)) I managed to play it after 1 week of exercising specially on it and the next 2 songs from the book (8 months from when I started learning piano). I find it very challenging especially the first 2 days when my hands were very confused about the notes as it`s not very intuitive :)) Especially the start of the second page took a lot of exercising. Now that I can play it (normally 98% good 4 out of 5 times) I`m just seeing myself playing it in a long loop as I don`t know why but the melody is just so nice :D The songs selection from the first 2 volumes of the books are really nice, especially from the second volume where it gives us (beginners) the chance to play some known songs, this being one of them. Thank you for the series you did on this books, you were a great help until now as I normally double check the songs with how you play them and sometimes it`s just so much easier after I see how it should sound from your playing and then start to go trough the song.
    By the way, very nice piano, the sound is incrediblle! Regards

      Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and comment! So glad that you have found the videos helpful in your musical journey. You have made excellent progress in such a short amount of time!! And yes, this song is not as "intuitive" since it is a simplification of Chopin's original composition. They tried to include enough notes to retain the harmony so that it would still sound like Chopin's Etude, but it doesn't lend itself to be as patterned as some of the other songs in the book. Most students spend a good deal more time working on this song but find their effort well rewarded by a beautiful, satisfying piece. Keep up the excellent work! I think you'll enjoy Level 3 even more. It's my favorite in the series. Well worth working towards. --Norma

      Thank you for your nice words and encouragement! Ithink that the exercises from Hanon, some playing around composing things on my own and some exercices from Czerny helped a lot the progress but lately I started to realise that I thought that I`m putting only 1hour normally pe day into piano but it`s actually much more than that and I just lose the notion of time when I`m on it :)) there was a huge jump after starting the Hanon and Czerny exercises beside Alfred book and now I got some method books for sight reading as I think that the Alfred course does not help a lot regarding sight reading but I understand that to include all the things someone would need from the book it would make it 500 pages :)) As you said , the songs selection is very good, I normally listen to progressive rock and heavy metal ( I know it`s strange that I choose piano not guitar ) but from the second book I started to look more into classical music and found some amazing compositions :D

      This is a difficult one for most students. You are very welcome! So glad that you have found the videos helpful as you work your way through the book. I checked this recording and I was playing at approximately 1/4 note = 69 which places it in the "Adagio" range on my metronome, but of course, I did speed up and slow down here and there to be more "expressivo" and less robotic. --Norma

    Interesting that you rank this piece as early-intermediate. For me, this is by far the hardest piece in the book thus far. The earlier two pieces you ranked as intermediate (Hava Nagila and Olympic Procession) I found to be more manageable. Here, both hands are constantly doing playing different notes with different patterns and with few repeated sessions, which makes it so much harder.

    • @92pianokeys40
      @92pianokeys40  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, it does vary from person to person which pieces they find more difficult or easier. The levels are an approximation. I agree with you that it is more challenging when the piece is less patterned and the notes feel more random and wandering. Typical of Chopin, so this arrangement is reflecting some of those characteristics. He composed some very challenging pieces. Many that are beyond my skill level, but absolutely beautiful nonetheless, and always worth the effort for the growth experienced. Just wanted you to know that I'm right there with you and I'll be working on Chopin for the rest of my life. --Norma

    I can reach it but I think I’m straining? I looked at stackexchange and they stated I might be doing something wrong, like technique?
    My hand shouldn’t be feeling “straining” is
    I’m wondering is it’s a stretching issue where I could eventually get it conformably?

      Everyone has a different size hand and varying degrees of flexibility between their fingers. Yes, the hand can gradually increase the degree of flexibility between the fingers, but whatever size hand/fingers you have when you are fully grown is all you get. My hand has not grown since I was a teenager, but I used to only be able to reach an 8va and now I can reach a 9th. My hand is relatively small. Also, I can tell that the flexibility between my fingers has increased with time. So in answer to your question, yes with time, flexibility can increase, but it is not something that should be rushed.
      We don't want your hand to feel like it is straining and has tension in it. A relaxed hand is definitely preferred. My recommendation is to change the fingering in that section of the song especially those 3 measures from 14-16. It might be better to change the 1/4 and 1/3 fingerings to 1/5 and just let your hand move around more freely and allow the pedal to make up the difference. I often will adjust the "suggested" fingering in a song to better suit a student's hand.
      Try some different fingerings and see what is most comfortable for you and write those changes in your music. One other tip is to play a bit "deeper" into the keys so that the thumb is closer to the black keys for those flats.
      Let me know how it goes. --Norma

      I completely agree with you that this is a difficult piece and I would've placed it later in the book. Most everyone struggles with this one, so know that you are not alone. If you read some of the other comments below, you will see the words "challenging, beautiful, my favorite, difficult".
      It is okay to play it at a slower tempo than I did.
      I recommend breaking it up into small sections, practicing hands separately slowly as needed. Try to look for patterns. Feel free to mark-up your music with fingering, letter names, arrows, circles, highlighter, etc. whatever is visually helpful for you.
      And intersperse your practice time on this song with other songs or other activities. It actually is more beneficial for the brain to have "spaced repetition" also called "inter-leaving". It gives the mind time to absorb what you are working on and also causes the learning to be at a deeper level since each time you start again, the brain has to go into a refresh mode and then it isn't just mindless repetition.
      Hope some of those ideas help. Let me know how it goes. --Norma

    • @92pianokeys40
      @92pianokeys40  3 роки тому

      You are correct! I am speeding up and slowing down because this is Chopin from the Romantic Period of music history and it is usually played with more "rubato", which means "freely" regarding the tempo. It is a bit of pulling-and-pushing of the tempo. Usually you will linger on the longer valued notes or higher notes of the phrase and speed up a bit with the shorter valued notes. --Norma

    how is this easier than op 28 no 7 ??

    • @92pianokeys40
      @92pianokeys40  Рік тому

      Everyone typically finds this one challenging. And I agree with you that the Opus 28, No. 7, in the Level 3 book, isn't that taxing with the slow tempo. I think the leveling is more based upon the fact that this Etude in the Level 2 book is an arrangement and the Opus 28, No. 7 in the Level 3 book is in its original form. But they do both have two-part writing, an arpeggiated chord, and accidentals. The 3 sharp key signature, the octaves and the 16th notes in the Opus 28, No. 7 are are generally considered a higher level. So those are my theories, but if anyone else wants to join the conversation with the comparison of the difficulty level of these 2 pieces, please feel free to chime in. --Norma

    • @92pianokeys40

      The key of F with one Bb is much easier for students to manage than the key of E with 4 sharps. Often when a song is simplified from the original composition, the key might be changed to make it easier for students who are at an earlier stage in their musical development. --Norma

    How do you get the rhythm?

    • @92pianokeys40
      @92pianokeys40  3 роки тому +1

      With this song there is a consistent 8th note rhythm, something is always being played on 8 rhythmic pulses in each measure. I like to count it as "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &". And then I think of the tempo more like a rubberband that can stretch a little, but then return to it's original shape. You can base your "Rubato" on the melody and push the tempo a bit when there are more melody notes, and then linger a bit on the longer value notes. Since this piece is from the Romantic Period, you don't need to feel as strict with your rhythm as you would with music from the Baroque or Classical Eras. This piece in particular is more "Expressivo". So there is a little wiggle room. --Norma

      That is a matter of opinion, but if you choose to rank music from level 1 - 10, with 1 being the easiest and 10 being the most difficult, to me this would rank in the 3-4 range. The level 1- 10 system is more of an American thing, in Australia, Canada and the U.K., they usually do more of a grade 1-8 system. --Norma

    • @92pianokeys40

      Often when they simplify a song/piece, arrangers will change the key signature to make it easier for students. By the time you reach the early-advanced level of being able to play this piece in it's original form, changing to a different key will be much easier than it is now. This arrangement simply provides students with the opportunity to play a familiar Chopin melody and enjoy its beauty while being in the process of developing the technical skills that are necessary to play the original. --Norma

      What would you have beginners play? Meaningless exercises? Method books are full of adaptations. They don't impair people's ability to play the original when they are ready - IF they ever are. Adaptations make being a beginner more enjoyable. As a pianist, aren't you supposed to be able to transpose? Aren't you supposed to be able to sight-read, not just rely on supposed "muscle memory"?

    Though the subscribers believed this early-intermediate version of the etude may’ve been easier than the original work, it defeats the purpose and you’re ruining the quality of the overall composition. You forgot to implement sections that are validly important and complement the song, that’s why it has publicity.
    The nostalgia in the simplified arrangement just isn’t as bold and applaudable as the original work, considering I’ve played “Tristesse” a countless amount of times in my far past. The composition holds a lot of legacy. You’re absolutely credited with your improvisation too, but improvements would be necessary. It wouldn’t be beneficial for me to continue rambling about what I feel would be best. I’m not the greatest pianist or musician alive, but I have learned it’s best not to knock one’s creation; leave it in its original position.
    Other pianists *do* play the middle-section slower without emphasis or dramatization, I am enthused with your expression, even though I can’t see the majority of your features. I applaud and appreciate you for giving it your absolute best.
    Your right hand gestures are maintained throughout the rest of the accompaniment, which does contribute to your version being good. Though the piece concentrates on melodious phrasing and the ambience of performing more than technical skills, you still have proven that your skills are beyond flawless; continue what you do!
