The Seekers were from Australia. When Judith Durham passed away two years ago, the country honored her with a state funeral. She was a national treasure.
No pyrotechnics ... no obscenities ... no gyrating dancers ... no synthesizers…no skimpy outfit...Just very talented musicians & singers in front of a microphone. One of the best exports from down-under; Judith w/ her phenomenal voice & the musical talent of Athol, Bruce & Keith - they've truly stood the test of time spanning 5 decades. Listen to The Seekers early & often.
I love this version. Tiny Judith Durham simply standing there with hands on hips and absolutely NAILING IT. If I'm not mistaken, she was around age 18 at the time of this recording. The guys had to ask permission from her parents to take her to England! They reluctantly agreed. That trip led to their immediate worldwide explosion on the folk-pop scene.
This is called folk-pop, and these guys were the very best of the genre. The forst real global band from Australia, you can pick pretty much anything they did and its as good as this. Proper musicians, and a superb vocalist in Judith.
Thank you so much for this, your reaction was great to see. I am a 70-year-old British woman and I grew up with the Seekers. I absolutely love their sound, especially Judith Durham's voice. So sad she is no longer with us. My seven grandchildren all know Seekers songs, because I have played them on my car CD player since they were small. I sang 'Morning Town Ride' every night to my kids when they were little, and they've done the same with their children. Timeless music. Thank you.
One of the greatest treasures of Australia and beloved worldwide. Judith Durham was a one of a kind talent. They had many hits and many folk songs. When Judith died 2 years ago they released what was going to be their next release. The song was called Carry Me. It was profound. Judith ended up comforting us with that song. The Seekers were magnificent.
When I was young and they showed up on the scene we really all went for their sound and now they are a big part of the soundtrack of our era. We found Judith & all to be one of the coolest sounds!
I remember as a kid in school in the 60's singing was a part of the school curriculum for every year Learning to sing in pitch and to sing harmonies was part and parcel of school life. Wonderful time to be alive ... and much simpler. :) Hope you listen to more from the Seekers. The lead singer Judith Durham was revered. 💞🕊☮
You should check out their big hit Georgy Girl. They were an Australian folk group. They formed in 62 and broke up in 68. They did a a few reunions in the 70s and 90s
All this time, I had NO idea they were Australian! TY for enlightening me about this awesome group!👍As an aside, can anyone tell me why most non-American singers sing with an American accent? I've always wondered about this.
I’ve had a horrible six months. Two time-threatening surgeries six weeks apart. And more. My sweet, wonderful hubby of 42 years made it far easier for me to cope. I’ve still got some PTSD, but he’s made my life so much better. This song is how I feel about him. Always forever. Thanks, Peter. What you’ve given me-you’ll never understand how much I love you. Thanks for our lives, and for two wonderful sons. THANK YOU…
A suggestion "The Seekers farewell performance, I am, you are, we are Australian," this performance gives this 66 year young Aussie sooo much national pride 😊
The Seekers were Australia's first and leading folk/pop group to leave our shores for international stardom in the 1960s. They continued right up until their final concert just prior to Judith's passing. The male members are all alive. They became particularly famous in the 1960s for a song called Georgie Girl which was used in a British movie.
Loved seeing The Seekers in your title! I love that old folk music. Peter, Paul & Mary was another great folk trio .... Puff the Magic Dragon and Blowin' in the Wind!
40 + makes you my children age group ❤ continue to enjoy my music 😊. In my house there was church music on a Sunday service on BBC radio to my brother listening to black sabbath and me with the Beatles . Not surprising that mam had migraine .🙁 she was a ace mam 😊 a 1956 baby boomer xx
I had such a crush on Judith Durham since the first time I saw her singing this song on TV in 1965 (I was six and had passionately loved music since I was three). Her hair, that pretty face, *_and that VOICE_* - Every song they did is a treasure and stands the test of time. My heart will never mend since I heard the news that I had lost my vocal hero and childhood love on 5 August 2022. Judith Durham will be terribly missed but her voice will last forever . She passed at 79 from bronchiectasis brought on by lifelong asthma. Goodbye my angelic songbird 😢.
The Seekers were an Austalian group who came over to London on a cruise ship originally. They decided to stay intending to be here 6 months maybe. For the next four years or so they dominated the charts here and in Australia with hits like The Carnival Is Over, Morning Town Ride, Georgie Girl, The Island of Dreams and this one. We lost Judith the same week Olivia Newton John passed. Australia lost two of its greatest voices and heaven gained two angels to their choir.
Another very popular Seeker's song called Red Rubber Ball & also that very song of Red Rubber Ball but it was sung by an American pop group called the Cyrkle & the Seekers also did another song called Puff the Magic Dragon but that very same song of Puff the Magic Dragon was sung by an American Folk Group called Peter, Paul & Mary of course.
They're recording in the Beatles studio-Abbey Road. The video is an overdub-1964 being the original hit-1968 is them miming over the song and this video has been upgraded using a stereo HD mix.
This group was a big deal for a long time. Judith Durham's voice just went from strength to strength as she got older, in my opinion. Interesting to note that she had a chronic lung disease from the age of four - it took her at the age of 79 in 2022. That voice came through badly compromised lungs the whole time. Her whole personal story is full of courage. I'd 100% recommend reacting to the Seekers live "I Am Australian: Special Farewell Performance" from their Golden Jubilee tour in 2013. Note on the side - Judith actually suffered a stroke during that tour, which affected her abillty to read and write music, but recovered.
gee you had me there for a moment 'she had a chronic lung disease'. the difference is that (according to doctor google) bronchitis is temporary - and the 'chronic lung disease' was that she had bronchitis over the life path.. lots of people live with that. in between bouts its okay BUT yes each bout leads to 'lung damage' its the same with asthma. in fact the singing and breath control would have been really beneficial for her lung expansion. tom Jones also had dodgy lungs - not that anyone would know when they hear him sing.
@@thevocalcrone My understanding was that she had Bronchiecstasis (which is different to Bronchitis - the former a permanent and chronic condition, the latter being a temporary, even if recurring, issue). But I could be all wrong. I never met her personally. And I'm not a doctor. You're right about the potential benefits of singing to build expansion to damaged lungs, though; that much I've experienced myself.
LOVE THIS SONG: SO MUCH!!! Reminds me of my late husband!! THANKS, BP!!! He must be thinking of me, today!! Miss him: SO MUCH!! Thanks for this one! RIP, Judith Durham!! :) Such a unique and beautiful voice!!
Thanx for the memories BP! Takes me way - w--a--y back! It took me most of 20 years to do it, but I finally found the one He made for me - 37 years and going strong!
Australia's best folk-rock band and beloved in their home country. Great harmonies, led by the amazing Judith Durham. "Georgy Girl" and "The Carnival is Over" are two more classics by them. Several of their songs were co-written by Dusty Springfield's brother Tom Springfield, and Paul Simon was also involved in several of their hits. When I was tiny, my dad used to sing me to sleep with their song "Morningtown Ride".
I did! Met her when she was just fifteen and we married 5 years later. Lost her to cancer two and a half years ago after being together for 58 years in total. This was the first record my wife ever bought and remained her favourite all her life. Her coffin was carried into the crematorium to this track. The words are so appropriate for us. I’m still in love with her. ❤❤❤
All from Melbourne Australia and I have a connection with them through my Father who played with them around the clubs and theatres around Melbourne in the early 60s I was also at there farewell concert in 1968 as a 1 year old but have no memory, their Harmonies were impeccable they were 2nd to the Beatles for number 1 hits in the UK during the 60s
I lover their, "The Carnival is Over". Another one of the great songs is "I am Australian". Sadly, Judith has passed away. It was like a day of mourning in Australia and elsewhere in the world.
I've always loved this song - even after all these years, it still holds up. Another great song of their was "A World of our Own". Thanks for playing this & your comments. It's one of the things I must appreciate about oldies, doo wop & live acapella: No autotune, backing tracks, over-production. (PS - I still have LPs, 45 & 78 RPMs - and play them!).
Judith Durham's voice is fantastic, you can see and hear her joy at singing, hope you check out The Carnival is over . I always thought they were the squarest band on the planet when I was growing up but now I like them,.
I think you'll find that this is recorded in the famous Abey Road Studios, London. The Seekers bore the distinction of knocking the Beatles off a number one spot.
I'd forgotten how beautiful this song is. Your comment regarding "no headphones" got me to thinking about Bethoven! To be deaf and still write the music he put out is doubly amazing!
Thank you for noticing another Australian band. They were one of the greatest in the 1960s and were really popular in Britain- as someone else said- outselling the Beatles and the Rolling Stones at the time.
The recorded a song in 1997 that I really like - “Speak To The Sky” written by Rick Springfield of all people. Nice to see them 35 years later and they still got it!
The Carnival is Over.... the group tipped off the beatles from number one on the charts The Carnival is Over was an immediate success upon its release in November 1965. It sold over 1.4m copies in the UK alone, and reached No 1 in both the UK and Australia. In 1967, the group were named Australians of the Year - the first musicians to be accorded that honour. The band still holds the record for the largest single concert crowd in the southern hemisphere (200,000), recorded at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne upon their return to Australia in March 1967.
I love the Seekers! Was too young when they were popular but discovered them as an adult hearing the theme to "Georgy Girl" (British movie starring Lynn Redgrave). Very mellow and lovely folk sound. Great start to the day, BP. TY for this reaction!👍
Judy, the lead singer is proof of Angels on earth. Incredibly Judith was unaware of how Beautiful She was. Very Humble, She made Her own dresses. The guy's were always Gentleman with Her and protected Her from zealous fans. Just a few years ago, knowing they could not go on forever, they made a new album. On it was the Song Far Shore. Please check it out. It is such a beautiful goodbye song. Back in Australia at an outside concert venue in the middle 1960's they played live to over 1 million fans. Georgie Girl is a former number 1 smash hit that describes Judith to a T! I am certain you will enjoy it.
I had never heard the name of this group, but I heard this song as a child. Gets me to thinking about my Mom - happy thoughts and memories after such a long, difficult end with her passing this spring. Didn't know it, but I needed this today as the Thanksgiving holiday (family get together times) rapidly approach. Thank you ❤🩹
This sounds like it is note-for-note the same as the studio recording that was released back in '64. So, it looks like maybe somebody filmed the recording session. This was done WAY before music videos and Video cameras. Thanks for playing this. I haven't heard it in a very long time. My adult ears picked up some of the lyrics my child ears didn't understand in 1964.
Wow-you’re taking me back to my childhood here! It was Christmas of 1967 when I got my first transistor radio, made by Westinghouse, AM only and just one earphone. I was in the 3rd grade. Songs like this were on the radio as well as The Doors. I thank you for keeping the music of my life alive and I know they will last forever because of the audience you reach in these videos.❤
RIP Judith. such a wonderful voice. Athol Guy, the bass player was also a member of the Victorian (Australia) Legislative Assembly during the 1970's and represented my suburb, I met him a number of times, great person. Last time I met him was in 2023 when a community theatre company I belong to was celebrating it's 50th anniversary, he is the company's main patron.
They had PA's that played the music back to them. Like listening to a live rock band at a club, they would put these speakers at the frount of the stage facing toward them. This has been done for many many years in live performances.
This performance was recorded at the Abbey Road Studios in London. In the beginning of the video it shows the sign above the entrance door to the studio.
Totally agree. Judith Durham's voice soars, particularly in I am Australian. I am not, I'm English but somehow just makes me feel proud for all Australians.
Judith Durham's voice was always so beautiful. RIP Judith. I love this Aussie group. "Georgie Girl" was always my favorite song of theirs. 💙
Georgy Girl, I agree that one is a must I say!
did you know the lyrics to georgy girl were writren by jim dale from the carry on films
Their version of Silver Threads and Golden Needles is the only one I really like. It’s those harmonies.
Yes! Please react to Georgy Girl!

Our Judith was the most Beautiful Australian song bird GOD ever put on this green earth - we shall nere see her like again

This was a MEGA HIT in 1964. It was #1 on Top 40 for months!

My favorite song when I was a kid. Amazing how Judith's voice cuts through and stands out so beautifully. RIP Judith.
For six months in 1966 they were outselling the Beatles and Rolling Stones for record sales. I was 7 years old when they broke up. I cried.
That young lady has a beautiful voice and her outfit is mid 60's mod really cool!!
Beautiful Judith Durham. Gorgeous lady with the voice of an angel. God rest her soul x
Love this - Judith Durham's voice is effortless
One of the greatest treasures of Australia and beloved worldwide. Judith Durham was a one of a kind talent. They had many hits and many folk songs. Such a booming voice from a petite young lady. And Judith had such class, just a very good person and so sweet.
60 years later I still play their music every so often brings back so many memories of childhood
When I was young and they showed up on the scene we really all went for their sound and now they are a big part of the soundtrack of our era. We found Judith & all to be one of the coolest sounds!
BP, before we had technology, we had crazy talent! Judith was one of those rare individuals who had "perfect pitch".
One of the timeless classics. Never get tired of it.
OMG! You reacted to my FAVOURITE GROUP! I grew up with this group! They are PHENOMENAL! Thank you! The Seekers are DEFINITELY Folk!
I remember as a kid in school in the 60's singing was a part of the school curriculum for every year Learning to sing in pitch and to sing harmonies was part and parcel of school life. Yes, Judith had the voice of an angel.. Believe it or not she never lot that voice and still sounded the same right up until she passed away.. RIP!
Formed in 1962 broke up in 1968 reformed 25 years later in 1993 until Judiths passing in 2022, This song knocked the Beatles off number 1
Love the seekers we had some fantastic groups, singers and music back then. What great times.
In all honesty, I think of what technology has lost us in true quality and talent.
Grew up with The Seekers. They were amazing in their time. Every one loved them.
I'm so happy you started out with this song for the Seekers. It is my favorite!
Yep a classic Aussie group, beautiful
Listening to the seekers takes me back to my youth and all my dear friends I have lost along the way.

Best song they did if you ask any Aussie is “I am Australian”. That’s their big hit for us. The unofficial Australian anthem!!
Judith's beautiful voice sends shivers down my spine.

50s and 60s music was pure talent.
DEFINITELY!
We used to sing Morn8ng Town Ride and The Carnival is Over at primary school in NZ in the 1960s❤

Judith's voice is so clear--like a bell. It always makes me want to cry.
This is timeless. My wife plays it often as this was our generation. Thank you.
I love the way that Judith is just standing there, arms akimbo, singin' like she was just telling a story. . . . .

Judith, the vocalist, met the bass player when she went to work as a secretary at the company where he worked. The rest as they say is history

I want to cry, so many memories. I wasn't a big fan of the Seekers but they made an impact and she had such a great voice.
RIP Judith. such a wonderful voice.
My mother had this record. I remember playing this. Wow so many memories.
This performance was recorded at the Abbey Road Studios in London. In the beginning of the video it shows the sign above the entrance door to the studio.
Morning Town Ride is a lovely song for children, The Carnival is Over is just beautiful, but see their reunion singing I am Australian.
Totally agree. Judith Durham's voice soars, particularly in I am Australian. I am not, I'm English but somehow just makes me feel proud for all Australians.
