@Holy shit, it's a talking muffin Ive watched every Brando film and every Lewis film. Brando does not have the same accent in every film. Watch "Teahouse of the August Moon" or I'll make it easy on you, just type in UA-cam "Teahouse of the August Moon Brando scene" and hit play. you'll find an asian. After than type in UA-cam "Morituri." you'll find a german. after that ask every great director still living who is the greatest modern day actor. they'll tell you Brando. But I'm sure you still won't believe it. Brando thought Clift was better than him. Lewis knew he had to create voice, accent, whig, make-up, character, to make it seem he's beating Brando. That's why he did it. He lives in the shadow of Marlon, and took roles with a need for voice and character to try to be greater. What you don't understand is voice, accent, make-up, costumes, don't make you a better actor. It's choices that make you the greatest. Choices in the moment. Just like life. In life, when you are fighting with your girlfriend in the living room, you don't know what you are going to do next. You may grab a lamp and throw it across the room and BAM! it hits the wall and busts, pieces flying everywhere. You didn't know you were going to do that until it was over with. Marlon would do that sort of thing and not know he was going to do that. Even when he was looking at his lines at home, he never thought of "How" he was going to do it. He just learned his lines. But he hardly ever, his whole acting life looked at his lines and learned them earnestly beforehand. Mainly he didn't even learn his lines, he just grabbed them in the moment. Production had his lines written on posterboard so he could see them off screen and pasted the lines on walls and on peoples chests. Just like you grab your lines in the moment from life, so did Marlon. On the second take and third take he usually remembered them. Stanislavski did this with his actors in the end - he fed the actors their lines from off stage in the middle of a scene. The difference is Lewis would practice grabbing the lamp at home while he was rehearsing. He'd say to himself "Ok, right here on this line, I'll grab something and throw it, maybe a lamp or something." He'd get to set and ask for a lamp to be placed beside him. Marlon's choices were impeccable. Spontaneous. He didn't even know what he was going to do next, in the moment. Lewis has pre-arranged paces. Walking into the unknown is a great risk, but knowing the scene and acting from Spirit and pulling it off is... Genius. It's actual living on stage. The English actors on the other side of the pond work from the External. As does Lewis. Even though Lewis uses some Method, which tries to work the internal, he still throws the illusion out for all to see. It's magic. An illusion. You fell for it. Brando is internal only. Doesn't hid behind the masks, accent, makeup costume, etc as does Lewis. No illusion. The difference is facade vs phenomenon. You fell for the facade. That's ok. Believe what you want. Acting is living though. Brando lived on the screen. Lewis mimics what he practiced at home before he came to the set. You don't know he's mimicking. I do.
All subjective of course but from 'Laundrette' to Christy Brown and Daniel Plainview he is utterly convincing and contains catastrophic power as well as fidelity. An actor I'd watch in anything and sad that he was, just, before my time as a theatregoer.
I feel the same way when he brought 3rd Oscar home. I was used to hearing his Lincoln accent until I didn't realize he was a Brit during his acceptance speech. I was like: "What? He's a brit? Wow." He and I have birthdays a day apart in April. (I (Aurora) on the 28th and Daniel the 29th).
His father, Cecil Day-Lewis a friend of the great Auden and our poet laureate in the 1960s...seeing "his" recently dead spectral presence while playing Hamlet meant he was lost to film, since he was a fine stage actor( then again, arguably the greatest stage actor now, Mark Rylance is a superb TV actor and got Supporting Actor Oscar for Bridge of Spies last year.). DDL very genial offstage, as relaxed as he is intense on film).
I acted with Daniel in “In the Name of the Father” under the magical hand of one Jim Sheridan. The last day of shooting and the very last shot was captured : “It’s a wrap!” There’s a roar from the slight cast and stout crew and what two people find themselves at the East-End of the location but Daniel and me, on our own. We look around and then at each other to give and get a hug in celebration but we didn’t know each other well enough so we just looked at each other and laughed at our predicament so we ran up to everybody else and hugs all round! But every once in a while I think back on that few seconds where it was just him and me looking for someone to hug and I think “…and I could have held maybe the greatest actor who’s ever lived in my arms. And in those moments I feel like the schmuck who passed on signing The Beatles!!…

@@ruly8153 Brando is just awful. I can tell these things. Who is good at his or her craft who is bad. And there is also the time he was going to bring the Indians on the dick cavet show, finally they had Hollywood star power to get an actual message across, their last chance - and Brando spent the whole time criticizing dick's mannerisms and being a prick. They threw the Indians on in the last five minutes reserved for guests of least importance, they couldn't think of what to say that was condensed. Perhaps this was on purpose - perhaps Brando didn't work with them because it would have ruined him in Hollywood. But he brought them and wanted them to shuck and jive in the spotlight like Mr. Bojangles. Now the Indians are gone trying to remember who they were came up new age like alot of other tribes of people our great nation thinned out. If you need good proof find the episode on youtube and watch the hour, how he crafted it to be a dick on dick cavet. You would hate Brando to see him act thus in such a heated climate of the time. For the Indians it was like a war Noone heard about. I like Brando in his early work and in the film when he was older and plays with Robert Redford. After that he lost his mind seems like.

I'd say 20 years is generous, more like 30/35. Last half-decent effort 'Meet the Parents' says it all really. I'd simply not bother watching a film because he was in it, I WOULD go to one with Ralph Fiennes, Edward Norton, Tom Hardy, Alf Molina, Gary Oldman etc.. It's even that I can't stand him, he's a nullity these days.
I love how he kinda takes a dump on theater types, I'm going to acting school right now and I swear it's blasphemous to want to work in film 🙄 I look up to him big time, and the fact that he views classical theater as uppity makes me happy ha
I felt stumped when I found out Daniel was retiring. I've only admired him for 4 years (as of 6/21/17) since the 2013 Oscars. Chances are, Lincoln would be my first and only time I've seen him on the big screen. To me, he is and always will be picky-picky.
Oh, but of course, besides being the World's Greatest Actor in history, he has to be a super nice guy too!!! With Mr. Daniel Day-Lewis, everything is always, at least seemingly, the way it should always be. Than You for your work Daniel!!!
It's true what Joe Rogan once said about Daniel Day Lewis. Most great actors are, deep down, weirdos. A lot in Hollywood are abusive alcoholics and are capable of doing some quite twisted things. This doesn't seem to be the case with Lewis. He's just a man obsessed with his craft. Certainly always found him to be quite an intelligent and funny man in interviews.
One thing that hits me with this interview is that he didn't even asked how is he? Or something in the beginning rather started to how did you prepared for that scene.....how was the traffic? Are you fine how are you so so honoured to have you with us tonight.. He thus remembers vividly insallah!
I suspect when a person who builds a character that is a complete 3 dimensional entity it would be as disheartening to see them in a 2hr snapshot as it would be to any individual who's measure was taken by 2hrs of a entire life. Thankyou Sir, carry on.
cause there is a old saying " if you can't beat them join them", however there is also an older saying " the wise man will always choose death over torture"
Yes, Joaquin is an amazingly talented, actor. I get what youre saying with DDL in mind. Wouldnt it be bliss if the 2 of them worked together, directed by PTA? If only.....

The only thing i dont like here is the slight dis to Sir Larry ...what he is missing is Larry is so good he can work outside in vs the method of inside out which is less precise but possibly more intriguing unless youre Larry Olivier
There is no possible comparison between Olivier and DDL. Different mores different times. Larry inherited the matinee idol tradition from du Maurier - DDL couldn’t be further from ‘acting’ DDL ‘becomes’

It's even that I can't stand him, he's a nullity these days.
He is the best ,Sir DD Lewis
Ok
I’m in love with him!!!!!!!
What a awesome man!!!!!
Unbelievably great!
Thank you so much for This priceless interview. I love you Daniel Day Lewis you are a genius 🥀.
Beautiful interview
There will be some day a DDL award given at the Oscar's for outstanding achievement in acting.
im 4 minutes in and this is the most i've ever heard him speak at once
Great interview by both sides. Daniel is such an inspiration.
He’s so good that he can play anyone even you!!!!!!
He'd have his work cut out playing me. I'm not easy. (It's not easy being me!) 🙂
Daniel doesn’t get enough credit for his humour. He’s a really funny and talented fella.
Those eyes...so beautiful, like twinkling little stars
I love how he kinda takes a dump on theater types, I'm going to acting school right now and I swear it's blasphemous to want to work in film 🙄 I look up to him big time, and the fact that he views classical theater as uppity makes me happy ha
I felt stumped when I found out Daniel was retiring. I've only admired him for 4 years (as of 6/21/17) since the 2013 Oscars. Chances are, Lincoln would be my first and only time I've seen him on the big screen. To me, he is and always will be picky-picky.
KevinKlineisawesome there's another film coming out this year, directed by Paul Amstrong, in which DDL is in. You have a second chance hahaha!!
You mean Paul Thomas Anderson? And it's Phantom Thread.
A shame he never had an Inside the Actors Studio episode!
He has to be really coaxed to come out and do an interview. It will have a billion hits if he comes Inside Actor Studio episode
It’s hard to tell this same person is Billy the butcher or plainview. What an absolute talent.
That was awesome. Thank you.
6:00 for most actors it's acting out a character, but for Daniel it's taking on the life of another man.
The Greatest 💜 A master actor without a doubt
Great! Yes, Daniel Day Lewis!
Oh, but of course, besides being the World's Greatest Actor in history, he has to be a super nice guy too!!! With Mr. Daniel Day-Lewis, everything is always, at least seemingly, the way it should always be. Than You for your work Daniel!!!
My left foot is one of my favorites.
Hear what he says about how Lawrence Olivier "missed the point" regarding Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man
18:25 well godamn 😂😂😂
How can he make so many different voices?
One thing that hits me with this interview is that he didn't even asked how is he? Or something in the beginning rather started to how did you prepared for that scene.....how was the traffic? Are you fine how are you so so honoured to have you with us tonight..
He thus remembers vividly insallah!
Great actor
I suspect when a person who builds a character that is a complete 3 dimensional entity it would be as disheartening to see them in a 2hr snapshot as it would be to any individual who's measure was taken by 2hrs of a entire life. Thankyou Sir, carry on.
cause there is a old saying " if you can't beat them join them", however there is also an older saying " the wise man will always choose death over torture"
He’s so good ❤❤
Amazing man❤
Before his greatest performance ( There will be Blood )
I am the third revelation.
This guy is a great interviewer
As he steps out J Phoenix steps in.
They are rare people. So gifted, quiet.
Deep. Love them both.
Ha ha ha - that’s hilarious
That's hilarious, you forgot Bale seriously
What are you talking about?
Yes, Joaquin is an amazingly talented, actor. I get what youre saying with DDL in mind. Wouldnt it be bliss if the 2 of them worked together, directed by PTA? If only.....
He’s good craic all the same.
Daniel Day-Lewis is so professional and cute!
No entiendo lo que dice el actor Daniel lewis pero es el mejor actor de Hollywod lo admiro y respeto su trabajo es el séptimo arte en persona.
Imagine hanging out with DDL for the weekend.
I respect you daniel
18:35 Alright then so Marty will bring Daniel back to cinema. Please. He must.
Yes yes yes 🙏🏻
HE LOOKS REALLY BEAUTIFUL IN THIS INTERVIEW, AND HIS VOICE IS SO SENSUAL THAT MAKES MY BODY TREMBLE AND CRAVE FOR HIM. GOD, HOW I LOVE HIM...IF HE ONLY KNEW... 💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘
I'll tell you where he lives and you can go there and tell him. It's worth a try. 😀
Daniel Day Lewis, Robert Duvall, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Pacino, a maybe Paul Dano will be on that list someday, I think he's outstanding .
I love when his Irish accent comes out
You mean brogue.
He was born in London.
What?
Sounds Liverpudlian to me.
Joe Bryant
He does have a hint of an irish accent he has lived does live and has being in this country since he was a kid yes he is English born but more irish then you think or would like to think!! I’m Proud of his acting skills and him as a human being he is like this when you know him this is a great interview of him being more relaxed then usual as you know he hates the limelight 🇮🇪☘️🦶⚽️
One of the best
Would love to see the whole interview.
This is the whole interview.
So good.
22 minutes went by like 5
He seems the exact opposite of the ruthless and violent characters he played in Gangs of New York or There will be blood.
"It's the thrill of wearing another man's skin, getting to know his innermost thoughts and feelings. That's how you get off"
This is a hard thing to articulate when you are just a student. Even after much education.
Larry inherited the matinee idol tradition from du Maurier -
DDL couldn’t be further from ‘acting’
DDL ‘becomes’
He has tattoos?! I like him even more now haha
this was very funny !!! 18:24 I can relate
Masterclass interview
18:24, When "wet as October" suddenly makes sense
😂
God he's attractive.
