strange as he is , I think Ritchie is completely honest in everything he says. He doesn't seem capable of sugar coating anything or exaggerating. He just lays it out there and doesn't care how he comes off. I respect that. And he's a brilliant guitarist too. But y'all already knew that
It get me happy to listen to one composing musician openly admit he ripped line ideas from others.
I just hope he hasn't been blaming others in vain, like the led zeppelin enormous egos have done making them embarrassingly hypocritical.

IOW he has become rich and famous enough to allow himself to be a total asshole quite openly. Good for him but I would choose different friends if I were in his company. Not saying that covert asshole is any better.

What he plays with Blackmore's Night is not folk music. If you think it is, you don't know what folk music really is.
Pretty sure he was referring to the american "folk" musicians of the time, Bob Dylan with his political protest songs and stuff like that.

Grew up listening to Ritchie Blackmore, today I am 51 years old and he still remains my all time fav guitarist. I loved every minute of this interview, he is what he is.....honest, hard working and always followed his instinct.
Ritchie has done what most dream of doing, he's followed his own instincts and did things the way he wanted and has been very successful doing it. He really is a unique intensely gifted musician with an extremely dry sense of humor.
well....most rock stars were BROKE most of their careers, and Ritchie is no exception.
Van Halen said they were $2 million in debt while having TWO HIT ALBUMS. (!)

Gillan amazed me. How hard they worked in those days, thrashing his voice w/ everything he had every other night. Its toll was apparent in most, but gillan, it never seemed to affect him. Definitely among the most indestructible rock vocalists ever.

Exactly. Always felt he shorted himself with his abilities and the people he played with. But... Ritchie is a different animal, Still regard him as one of the best if not one of THE greatest.
Good to see that Ritchie values his early classical music lessons. He says they only lasted a year but gave him a good basics in music and obviously influenced his style for the rest of his life. After the lessons he says he practised 8 hours a day because he loved the guitar so much. That's the sort of committent you need to get good. And if you've got a sprinkle of star dust you become great.
How cannot you admire this man!

Ritchie is an exceptionally talented musician with a music courrier spanning several decades. His dedication to the instrument is phenomenal and his ability to switch between rock ,classical and folk is rare . Ritchie has been an inspiration to millions of guitarists here in India as well ,who along with his virtuoso playing style also try to emulate his grumpy ,eccentric and irratic behavior. Ritchie is surely one of those rare irreplaceable stars who will live forever.
Never beckoned the 'spotlight' which I have to admire because he truly shone as the star.

it's amazing Ritchie founded Deep Purple. He put the band together then years later just let it go on without him. That just doesnt happen without lawsuits over the name and such. . he Doesnt show up to the hall of fame , the band he started
Im just really learning about Mr Blackmore, but he seems like a 100% honest guy. Not hard to imagine why folks might say hes an arse, honesty is often rewarded that way lol.

Voice over by Alexis Corner, father of the British blues boom in the sixties. Korner encouraged many American blues artists, previously virtually unknown in Britain, to perform at the London Blues and Barrelhouse Club, which he established with Cyril Davies at the Round House pub in Soho. He named British rock band Free, and had most of the rolling stones playing in his band before the stones were formed. He also had a voice like smoked honey, a true legend.

im 67 an know no one even satriana or the great ones or hendrix that can come close to ritchie...an love his honesty an humour at things...he is so complex, no one can touch what he plays. from ,..lazy, to...no one came or live hiway star,my favourite an we cant play it like him,no one can at all,some come close an then fall by the wayside.. what a gifted asshole moody man...

Really weird I had to double check whether it was RB really talking, he sounds so neutral and so logical about everything. I admire his honesty especially as to borrowing a few riffs from other artist's works.

Excellent interview. Intelligent and honest. Interesting that he said, even he doesn't understand himself. Yet,he did seem to always know what he wanted to do musically, even if it changed from time to time through the years.

We rushed the. Stage in Jacksonville fl.I guess it was around 1971 and I was right in front of Ritchie’s amp I could not hear for a few days but I would do it all over. Gosh he was just so fast and melodic. Definitely top five best guitarist. Wish he would have stayed in the band.

For me, Ritchie is number one from the 70s, I love his style and sound enormously. He was sincere in this interview, and perhaps few are like that! Perhaps it is precisely this mysterious, difficult fluctuating character that a little bit sincerely resembles me that personally made him in my eyes the greatest of all and perhaps ever! It is my opinion, I had the pleasure of seeing only two concerts of him in Italy, they were both fantastic .... Ritchie Blackmore is simply a great artist ..... thanks for posting this interview.

Another much appreciated Ritchie Blackmore interview because of his honest, dry humour laced n funny answers n pov of his experiences in band life. Will always be my 1st guitar hero eversince a teenager growing up early 70's in Fiji
After hearing Hank Marvin and Duane Eddy I wanted to play guitar.Then I heard Ritchie and Hendrix and I really wanted to play guitar and a Fender Stratocaster.
Blackmore sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

I have never heard Blackmore speak, other that reading an interview .
Those slide melodies he has in Rainbow are amazing.
They say Yngwie sounds like Blackmore, maybe in Rhythm guitar, but i have never heard Yngwie play slide.
Fantastic video. There is so much half baked information about him but this was as clear as it gets. Thank you so much. I don't understand why he didn't continue with graham Bonett and Tony Carey though I think I understand to an extent.
Bonnett is one of the greatest hard rock singers ever (which is odd bc that's not what he does but then Ritchie hired him)!
GREAT VOICE. GREAT PIPES. (Most rock singers and metal singers are AWFUL, and have shrieking voices or whiny voices like Vince Neal and the rest.)
I think it was solely IMAGE that pushed GB out, cuz some fans were shocked by his LOOK.

There's an interview with Glenn Hughes he says Blackmore was unbearable mostly because he was too serious and focused on the music and all the other boys in Purple, except Lord and Paice, were also trying to have as much fun as possible at the same time...there are interviews with Paice and Lord confirming that...an extremely focused musician clashing with other extremely talented guys who were sometimes losing it because of too much drinking, partying and drugs...he actually never had that sex, drugs and Rock'n'Roll mindset and would get mad at the other guys

Bob Daisley said he was blown away metaphorically and literally when he joined the last incarnation of Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio. Blackmore took them to the famous Rainbow rock groupie hang out on Sunset Strip where Daisley and the other new member Rainbow and a few hangers on of partook in an orgy !
Bob Daisley asked Blackmore who was slinking out the back door, 'aren't you staying',
to which the reply was in the effect of " No, I did this 10 years ago and I'm sick of it,
But you enjoy yourselves."
That must be the reason why he left the band after made in Europe..Coverdale and Hughes where unruly on stage and were shouting unnecessarily.

Rare honestly interview
One of the few interviews where RB is honest. On most conversations, he seems to make stuff up to a degree.
Excellent interview. Great guitar player. But I've always felt that I were in a situation with Richie, and he tried to mess with me, I would have a go with him and it would be quite a tussle. He intimidated a lot of people with his attitude.
Remember hearing this on the BBC ...

No doubt Ritchie Blackmore is a genius on the guitar and a very good text-writer as well...his long career speeks for itself..My humble opinion though...is that he was at his best when Bonnet was the lead vocal...Ritchie seemed more focused/pissed (and better), during Bonnets time in Rainbow..

I was in an aw when I heard him for the first time. It seemed that he was always ahead of any other guitarist at that time. One of his most brilliant solos is the one on Kentucky Woman. If you don´t know it, you should. Additionally his guitar sound still is exceptional, especially when he plays bluesy stuff. I once heard him with Rainbow. It was way too loud and not really good. But then he suddenly played a blues tune and that was worth listening to the whole damn show.

despite everything i heard about him, he's seems like a very decent, straight, talking bloke here.
I met him once. I blew off organic chem lab, went to the local watering hole and he happened to walk in (seriously. Turns out he was at the time dating a local gal). Went up to him, offered to buy him a beer. He said sure, have a seat. We spoke for over an hour talking about gear, Baroque music (he knows a lot, very knowledgeable). This was 76, the Rising tour. I mentioned that I was looking forward to seeing the band next week. He then went to a pay phone (yes, I'm old), made a call. Got me backstage pass. Went to the concert - great f*cking concert. Went backstage. Met Ritchie again. He remembered me and thanked me for coming. Met the other lads in Rainbow. Great bunch of guys. Goddam, Cozy was funny as hell. Hit it off with Tony Carey (I'm also a keyboardist). He gave me suggestions on Moog synth settings.
I found Ritchie to be a really nice guy, not at all like the image he cultivated for himself, down to earth, soft spoken, highly intelligent. And of course, he is the GOAT!!

Quite interesting statements. I like how Ritchie plays the guitar, I don't know him as a person, but according to his own self description, and Ronnie Dio's, he is... COMPLICATED.
