    The A6 and A7 were bombers that surpassed any and all expatiations. I'm a former Kittyhawk Engineman, A-Gang and watched those two warbirds returned with many holes in them. This Movie I watched it when it first premiered and I was returned to those days on that Flat Top (1971-1973).

      My friend was aboard a USN carrier on Yankee Station during the very busy actions of the Vietnam War. He was on the service crew of an A6. Apparently the A6 was a flying bundle of wires and electronics. He told me about the organized frenzy aboard ship when the ship went into action. Must've been similar to what the current aircraft naval personnel go through now.

    The movie is from Stephen Koontz book “flight of the intruder“. That book and the books that followed it up by Koontz are all fantastic books and are extremely realistic. My old law partner was a Navy carrier pilot who flew attack bombers (maybe the Intruder) and he recommended the book to me years ago. He said that reading the book it was so realistic that he started waking up in a cold sweat. Koontz is a great writer. The movie is a tad melodramatic at times but it is the great movie that it is in my opinion due to the acting of Willem Dafoe.

    The problem with this movie is that bombing North Vietnam airfields was off limits for much of the war because there were Russian and Chinese working with the North Vietnamese and we were terrified that bombing those bases would bring Russia and China into the war. Obviously, they were already in the war.
    But putting the North Vietnamese military bases off-limits, it allowed them to continue to intercept our aircraft on a daily basis.
    I was a Marine infantry platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. People who have no idea what they are talking about criticized General Westmoreland for losing the war. But you want to know who really lost that war? Congress, the President, and the Secretary of Defense. They were the ones to places severe limitation on Westmoreland and then blamed him for losing.
    I served 21 years in the Marine Corps with 3 years in combat. I will tell you the truth that the one and only way to win a war is to commit overwhelming forces in an aggressive campaign to end the war as quickly as possible by breaking the will of the enemy to continue fighting.
    We should have learned from WW II that the only way to defeat the enemy is to defeat him on is homeland. In Vietnam, we played a war of attrition against North Vietnam without invading North Vietnam. There is a major truth in the history of modern warfare: air power alone cannot defeat the enemy. It's important, but it's not the critical factor. The only exception was dropping the atomic bombs on Japan to force them to surrender. In all other cases, it took boots on the ground to take enemy territory to win.
    If we had invaded North Vietnam WW II style, it would have been a bloody mess, but we would have been quick and we would have lost fewer people than the 58,000 men and women killed in the Vietnam war and it would have only lasted a few months instead of 10 years.
    Here's the problem we have. While it is important that civilian control is imposed on our military, politicians, the Secretaries of Defense and the services, and the President have no clue what it takes to win a war. They view it strictly from the prospective of staying in office.
    You see WW II was very different. President Roosevelt called for the unconditional surrender of Japan and Germany and the Congress and people backed them up--and guess what, we won.
    In the Korean War, Truman was unwilling to take General MacArthur's advice to use nuclear weapons to counter the thousand to one odds faced by US troops when the Chinese entered the war for North Korea. The result was we didn't win the war. War ended where it started at the 38th parallel. We lost the war because North Korea with Chinese and Russian prevented the North Koreans from losing. Technically, we are still in a state of war with North Korea that is now a nuclear threat to South Korea, Japan, and the US. Well done Truman. You took a war that we should have won and created a nuclear threat for today.
    The same with Afghanistan. Secretary of Defense and Vice President Chaney wanted special forces riding on horseback to be the primary means of defeating the Taliban. So how did 20 years of using minimum forces turn out? With a humiliating withdrawal where we turned over 80 billion dollars of military equipment to the Taliban that will keep them ever stronger than before for decades to come. Of course, it didn't help that the Afghan President politicians, government, and military were totally corrupt.
    In Ukraine, NATO obvious will not get directly involved because of the potential of nuclear war with Russia. But what if NATO had said that it was intervening on behalf of Ukraine and threatened nuclear war with Russia if Russia. Let's assume that the NATO threat was believable. Do you think Russia would destroy itself over Ukraine? It's true that Russia could launch thousands of nuclear missiles, but at what cost? Russia would also end up a glowing ember with no means of governance or supporting economy. Would they risk it?
    And remember how Democrats mocked President Reagan's Star Wars missile defense initiative and how strongly they opposed it. What if we had initiated a robust missile defense program since 1980's, we might now have a robust missile defense of the US and the rest of NATO. But no, we lost decades of research and today we have a missile defense system that at most try to intercept several incoming missiles, but not the hundreds or thousands Russia can send today.
    Bush wanted to put anti-ICBMs in Poland and other countries, but Obama canceled it. Trump wanted to put anti-ICBM systems into the Baltic countries, but Democrats opposed it and Biden killed it. So the question is why are Democrats so opposed to anti-ICBM defenses????
    If Trump or DeSantis are elected in 2024, then the anti-ICBM missile systems will be back in the Baltic countries, and when the Democrats take control they will take them out.
    You have to ask yourself, why do the Democrats want to make the US less safe from nuclear attack? They've been fighting it tooth and nail since the 1980's. Why?
    Back to the Flight of the intruder. It's true that over a thousand US jets were shot down over North Vietnam. But that was because we didn't invade North Vietnamese the same way the North invaded the South.
    If we had sent two or three Marine Divisions into North Vietnam, there wouldn't have been so many anti-aircraft missiles and guns. There wouldn't have been uninterrupted resupplies to the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army in the South. There would have been any capability of North Vietnam to sustain it's military.
    One of the rules of war is to never allow you enemy to have a sanctuary where he can rest, rearm, train, and launch new attacks. That is exactly what we allowed in the Vietnam War.

      Only movies have baddies. We often fought stupidly, tried to show off the size of our balls by using cannons on squirrels (which shows the opposite of balls), and also taught the world how to perform asymmetric warfare against us, which lessons they really took to heart (hopefully, per the Ukraine failure, that phenomenon where all you have to do is give asymmetric resisters high tech portable weapons, ultimately leads to world peace!)
      But what we were doing here made a basic sort of sense. A flawed system, headed by short-sighted and unprincipled tyrants, had to keep expanding to continue hiding the fact that it wasn't working. We had to make it expensive to expand. We certainly did that. Ultimately, all defensive warfare has to consist of empowering local people to 1) make their own decisions as to what kind of political system they want, and 2) resist armed attempts from without to force a different political system on them. Our mistake in 'nam was that our guys did the fighting. The locals just cowered in their towns, waiting for it to be over.

      No, didn't forget. The initial ejection at the start of the clip is wrong (guess Hollywood needs...) but in the Intruder, the ejection took place through the canopy as seen in 3:35. That is the correct sequence. No need to manually open the canopy.

    • @larryhutchens7593
      @larryhutchens7593 2 роки тому +2

      @@Yllod Proper way to eject was through the canopy. The ejection seat is made in such a way that the top of the seat will hit the plexiglass before the pilot's head does. Primary means of ejection is by the overhead handle which has a face curtain for protection. Second and third method is a lever on the right side of the seat and one at the front of the seat between the pilots legs. If the pilot tried to eject the canopy it could get stuck halfway due to damage & the pilot would have no way out. That heavy metal bar running across the front of the canopy would be an obstacle. The canopy slides on a set of rails & can be blown in an emergency but not advisable while in flight. Other aircraft of the time had clam shell style canopies (F-4, A-4, A-7) which would rip off the plane as soon as it got caught in the air stream. Also, when the engines stop turning you lose all hydraulics and any control of the plane, basically a falling brick. Main fuel tank (fuselage tank) is right behind the pilot & BN. Advisable to exit the bird ASAP.

    1. Depois disto partiu Jesus para o outro lado do mar da Galiléia, também chamado de Tiberíades.
    2. E seguia-o uma grande multidão, porque via os sinais que operava sobre os enfermos.
    3. Subiu, pois, Jesus ao monte e sentou-se ali com seus discípulos.
    4. Ora, a páscoa, a festa dos judeus, estava próxima.
    5. Então Jesus, levantando os olhos, e vendo que uma grande multidão vinha ter com ele, disse a Filipe: Onde compraremos pão, para estes comerem?
    6. Mas dizia isto para o experimentar; pois ele bem sabia o que ia fazer.
    7. Respondeu-lhe Filipe: Duzentos denários de pão não lhes bastam, para que cada um receba um pouco.
    8. Ao que lhe disse um dos seus discípulos, André, irmão de Simão Pedro:
    9. Está aqui um rapaz que tem cinco pães de cevada e dois peixinhos; mas que é isto para tantos?
    10. Disse Jesus: Fazei reclinar-se o povo. Ora, naquele lugar havia muita relva. Reclinaram-se aí, pois, os homens em número de quase cinco mil.
    11. Jesus, então, tomou os pães e, havendo dado graças, repartiu-os pelos que estavam reclinados; e de igual modo os peixes, quanto eles queriam.
    12. E quando estavam saciados, disse aos seus discípulos: Recolhei os pedaços que sobejaram, para que nada se perca.
    13. Recolheram-nos, pois e encheram doze cestos de pedaços dos cinco pães de cevada, que sobejaram aos que haviam comido.
    14. Vendo, pois, aqueles homens o sinal que Jesus operara, diziam: este é verdadeiramente o profeta que havia de vir ao mundo.
    15. Percebendo, pois, Jesus que estavam prestes a vir e levá-lo à força para o fazerem rei, tornou a retirar-se para o monte, ele sozinho.
    16. Ao cair da tarde, desceram os seus discípulos ao mar;
    17. e, entrando num barco, atravessavam o mar em direção a Cafarnaum; enquanto isso, escurecera e Jesus ainda não tinha vindo ter com eles;
    18. ademais, o mar se empolava, porque soprava forte vento.
    19. Tendo, pois, remado uns vinte e cinco ou trinta estádios, viram a Jesus andando sobre o mar e aproximando-se do barco; e ficaram atemorizados.
    20. Mas ele lhes disse: Sou eu; não temais.
    21. Então eles de boa mente o receberam no barco; e logo o barco chegou à terra para onde iam.
    22. No dia seguinte, a multidão que ficara no outro lado do mar, sabendo que não houvera ali senão um barquinho, e que Jesus não embarcara nele com seus discípulos, mas que estes tinham ido sós
    23. contudo, outros barquinhos haviam chegado a Tiberíades para perto do lugar onde comeram o pão, havendo o Senhor dado graças;
    24. quando, pois, viram que Jesus não estava ali nem os seus discípulos, entraram eles também nos barcos, e foram a Cafarnaum, em busca de Jesus.
    25. E, achando-o no outro lado do mar, perguntaram-lhe: Rabi, quando chegaste aqui?
    26. Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo que me buscais, não porque vistes sinais, mas porque comestes do pão e vos saciastes.
    27. Trabalhai, não pela comida que perece, mas pela comida que permanece para a vida eterna, a qual o Filho do homem vos dará; pois neste, Deus, o Pai, imprimiu o seu selo.
    28. Pergutaram-lhe, pois: Que havemos de fazer para praticarmos as obras de Deus?
    29. Jesus lhes respondeu: A obra de Deus é esta: Que creiais naquele que ele enviou.
    30. Perguntaram-lhe, então: Que sinal, pois, fazes tu, para que o vejamos e te creiamos? Que operas tu?
    31. Nossos pais comeram o maná no deserto, como está escrito: Do céu deu-lhes pão a comer.
    32. Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Não foi Moisés que vos deu o pão do céu; mas meu Pai vos dá o verdadeiro pão do céu.
    33. Porque o pão de Deus é aquele que desce do céu e dá vida ao mundo.
    34. Disseram-lhe, pois: Senhor, dá-nos sempre desse pão.
    35. Declarou-lhes Jesus. Eu sou o pão da vida; aquele que vem a mim, de modo algum terá fome, e quem crê em mim jamais terá sede.
    36. Mas como já vos disse, vós me tendes visto, e contudo não credes.
    37. Todo o que o Pai me dá virá a mim; e o que vem a mim de maneira nenhuma o lançarei fora.
    38. Porque eu desci do céu, não para fazer a minha vontade, mas a vontade daquele que me enviou.
    39. E a vontade do que me enviou é esta: Que eu não perca nenhum de todos aqueles que me deu, mas que eu o ressuscite no último dia.
    40. Porquanto esta é a vontade de meu Pai: Que todo aquele que vê o Filho e crê nele, tenha a vida eterna; e eu o ressuscitarei no último dia.
    41. Murmuravam, pois, dele os judeus, porque dissera: Eu sou o pão que desceu do céu;
    42. e perguntavam: Não é Jesus, o filho de José, cujo pai e mãe nós conhecemos? Como, pois, diz agora: Desci do céu?
    43. Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Não murmureis entre vós.
    44. Ninguém pode vir a mim, se o Pai que me enviou não o trouxer; e eu o ressuscitarei no último dia.
    45. Está escrito nos profetas: E serão todos ensinados por Deus. Portanto todo aquele que do Pai ouviu e aprendeu vem a mim.
    46. Não que alguém tenha visto o Pai, senão aquele que é vindo de Deus; só ele tem visto o Pai.
    47. Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Aquele que crê tem a vida eterna.
    48. Eu sou o pão da vida.
    49. Vossos pais comeram o maná no deserto e morreram.
    50. Este é o pão que desce do céu, para que o que dele comer não morra.
    51. Eu sou o pão vivo que desceu do céu; se alguém comer deste pão, viverá para sempre; e o pão que eu darei pela vida do mundo é a minha carne.
    52. Disputavam, pois, os judeus entre si, dizendo: Como pode este dar-nos a sua carne a comer?
    53. Disse-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Se não comerdes a carne do Filho do homem, e não beberdes o seu sangue, não tereis vida em vós mesmos.
    54. Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue tem a vida eterna; e eu o ressuscitarei no último dia.
    55. Porque a minha carne verdadeiramente é comida, e o meu sangue verdadeiramente é bebida.
    56. Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue permanece em mim e eu nele.
    57. Assim como o Pai, que vive, me enviou, e eu vivo pelo Pai, assim, quem de mim se alimenta, também viverá por mim.
    58. Este é o pão que desceu do céu; não é como o caso de vossos pais, que comeram o maná e morreram; quem comer este pão viverá para sempre.
    59. Estas coisas falou Jesus quando ensinava na sinagoga em Cafarnaum.
    60. Muitos, pois, dos seus discípulos, ouvindo isto, disseram: Duro é este discurso; quem o pode ouvir?
    61. Mas, sabendo Jesus em si mesmo que murmuravam disto os seus discípulos, disse-lhes: Isto vos escandaliza?
    62. Que seria, pois, se vísseis subir o Filho do homem para onde primeiro estava?
    63. O espírito é o que vivifica, a carne para nada aproveita; as palavras que eu vos tenho dito são espírito e são vida.
    64. Mas há alguns de vós que não crêem. Pois Jesus sabia, desde o princípio, quem eram os que não criam, e quem era o que o havia de entregar.
    65. E continuou: Por isso vos disse que ninguém pode vir a mim, se pelo Pai lhe não for concedido.
    66. Por causa disso muitos dos seus discípulos voltaram para trás e não andaram mais com ele.
    67. Perguntou então Jesus aos doze: Quereis vós também retirar-vos?
    68. Respondeu-lhe Simão Pedro: Senhor, para quem iremos nós? Tu tens as palavras da vida eterna.
    69. E nós já temos crido e bem sabemos que tu és o Santo de Deus.
    70. Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Não vos escolhi a vós os doze? Contudo um de vós é o diabo.
    71. Referia-se a Judas, filho de Simão Iscariotes; porque era ele o que o havia de entregar, sendo um dos doze.

    I could have really admired Danny Glover for his role in this movie except for he's a total left-winger. I wonder why he agreed to act as a U.S. Navy 0-5 Commander Intruder light bomber pilot.
