I can tell you, with complete sincerity, that this video is the first I've seen on my UA-cam feed in at least 3 months. I love watching this channel as often as I can, and the fact this video has only popped up now is proof that UA-cam needs to fix their crap.

Same here. Unless I'm directly looking at my subscription feed, I almost never see anyone I'm subscribed to. Even for channels I have notifications on for. I only see videos that are under 10 minutes in length, which are normally skits or clickbait. I don't like them, so I don't sub to them, but they're still all I see on my home page.

@@chaosstripe9446 It's bullshit; UA-cam was THE platform for making videos, earning a living that doesn't cost you your health and/or mental health and in the past 5-ish years it went downhill, bad.

Something I've recently noticed, is how aggressively YT has started flooding recommendations with a single topic. If you watch a few videos about gaming on a few consecutive days, for example, your recommendations page will very quickly exclude anything else but gaming. So, unless you make a concerted effort to diversify the topics you watch, YT will simply wipe any recommendations of it until you actually search for it. The average person won't do this, or even know about it.

I've discovered that it's the opposite. I'm constantly being urged to watch videos I wouldn't normally be interested - my interests are history, historical clothing/needlecraft and some animal videos with a few news channels - and when I click all I get are crappy US shows pushing one particular narrative or another but ONLY of interest to bl00dy septics. Shad I hate to tell you this, but it’s not really a UA-cam conspiracy to destroy you. 1) You got political, which is almost never a good thing for a content creator regardless of what the expressed views actually are. It doesn’t matter that you are political on another channel, people will still associate you with that. 2) Obviously not as many people will be watching your videos as during the height of Covid, people had more time then and where looking for ways to spend it. 3) You are a channel for mostly teenagers as far as I can tell, there is not a significant adult population that has both the time and inclination to consistently watch videos on the topics that you enjoy. This is a big deal because kids now are increasingly moving towards short form content, so platforms like UA-cam are happy feeding it to them, which is probably why you had such quick growth on TikTok. 4) In my opinion your content has just got a little tired. (this point is purely personal preference)
I have nothing against you man, but this is the second video that I’ve seen like this from your channel, and it really hurts to watch. I can’t tell you where to go from here, but if you want this thing to keep going you need to think outside of the box, not just increase production value and blame UA-cam when that doesn’t work. The world is moving on, you can either get with the program, or get left behind. I wish the best for you and your family even though you probably are not gonna read this.

    • @lowca3717

I feel much the same. I discovered the channel during Covid when I had more time at home to waste. I do enjoy swords, and the topics discussed here... but only to a point (no pun intended). There are only so many Sword videos an adult could watch before burnout or moving onto other things. The first handful I watched were fun, interesting and I learned a few things. But I don't need an in-depth breakdown on edged weapon combat for every century, covering every possible hypothetical scenario and every weapon. In a way, I feel like the topic is a little too niche to tent-pole continuous, reliable traffic. Unless you are into larping or collecting (a relatively small group compared to UA-cam users as a whole).
No shade here... I do realize this is just my 2¢, but are 1.68m people watching sword videos every day? week? month? It just seems unrealistic given the topic.

Do stuff add to UA-cam other than AD revenue such as merch and affiliate links etc.... Add those even to the old videos and the other platform. Start building your drop shipping business (it will take sometime , step by step, on the side. Get in touch with someone that is established in that field. Such as FBA. Do fulfilment type.). Make other stream other than AD revenue using social media as a marketing platform for yourself. In fact use AD revenue at some point as a tool for making free ads. Higher editors and lower the quality to do more videos. Have one good video a week. Post everyday. Do streaming on multiple platforms at sametime (UA-cam, Twitch and Kick) 2 times a week. Higher someone and use AI to do shorts and 5 mints or so videos from the 2 streams. Allow people to copy paste sections of your stream and encourage them to do so. Sell a course for something on your own website on cloud host using a website maker and make affiliate link for signup for it for the customers. Do some shorts on your other channels that is inflammatory and hookup Shadiversity link to it. Encourage viewers to search u and look into subscription area. Make a plugin that can be added to browsers and a phone app that users can use to add youtube channel links where AI/program will watch until new content recording they chose short or video or both is new posted then gives them a notification. The program keeps showing the notification for a month until the video is at history at their UA-cam account which has to be the same emile they used to make this app account and they can add other emails, that is on their phone.

The problem here is that it requires active "work" on your home tab until its recommendations are fine. Until it becomes kind of usable you'll have to click manually on a lot of videos to ensure that yt never recommends you that kind of stuff again, but I doubt that people who doesn't use their sub' box put that effort into it.

If you want to keep seeing the new videos of a channel(s), the mechanism for doing that has ALWAYS been to subscribe, and use the subscriptions feed to see all new uploads from all the channels you subscribe to. It has been that way for well over a decade now.
Subscribing to a channel and relying on the recommended feed is like buying CD's and then hoping the radio will play the music you bought.

I remember we were all encouraging Shad to just do the shorts so that they could get on the good side of the UA-cam algorithm. However, I now have to wonder if shorts have brought in the wrong kind of audience. Most of Shad's content is teaching videos, something to focus on and learn from for 20+ minutes. They are not short term, short attention span, instant dopamine release videos.

What changed is how they are treated: rather than just another video that is simply short in length, they are considered a different media category altogether. THAT is them trying to build in TikTok. And that is the real problem: by pushing the "popcorn" videos rather than a proper mix of long and short and mid-lengths, that breaks the balance.

Meaning this as fully constructive, personally I don't enjoy the content as much as I did - the production values are better for sure, I just don't like the new formats. I think the reason why the Veritasium video did well is that it was a bit of a throwback, good information about history - it would be weapons, armour, castles, battles, materials, anything really, I personally find it more engaging than testing stuff. It might just be me though so I thought I'd drop my two cents and let you gauge.

    • @eliabeck689

I also think it'd be cool to get some of the older-style content back again. I came in for the information on gambesons and maille and the Shabbard, and while I like the new content (and think Nate and Tyranth are awesome), I do miss some of the older stuff.
As a writer, learning that gambeson was a thing was *super* helpful for me, and ever since I watched that video, all my lightly-armored fighting characters have used that instead of the leather vests I used to put them in. The old castle design videos always inspired me to want to learn 3D modeling or how to build miniatures, because I wanted to build a super effective castle, too.
The new stuff is cool, and I don't think you should get rid of it by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't feel like I'm learning as much from this channel as I used to, and I came here primarily to learn so I can write more accurate story-details.

I learned a valuable lesson about this when I was very young. I took lessons and practically lived at a horse ranch from around 11 to about 16. Every day, all day, I was at that barn, being a 'barn rat' and loving every moment. I was teaching lessons, working to help, and enjoying my favourite horse (who I eventually got for Christmas one year.) When I started there, business was flourishing. At least, as much a small lesson barn could in that area.
The owner had several (she had almost two dozen at one point) horses of her own and for her family, the boarding stalls were at 100% capacity, and lessons/pony camps were booming. Over time, as the second to last 'generation' of barn kids lost interest, the final generation was significantly smaller. While lessons slowed, capacity dropped to around half of what it once was, and boarders started leaving so their kids would have more friends to ride with; hay prices went up, utilities went up, and she had her own financial commitments like feeding her family, which also went up in price.
The owner started thinning down her herd. The trainer started losing lessons. The staff decreased. Some people were late on board, or stopped paying their board entirely and abandoned old horses, as sh*tty people do from time to time. The owner was an amazing and caring woman and fed them out of her own pocket.
That care came to be her demise. She eventually got to the point where she was feeding a large portion of all horses on the property out of her own pocket. Be it entire meals, or just supplementing the hard keepers, she was pouring her wages from her day job into the barn; and later her savings. Because this woman wanted to hold onto the dream she had worked so hard for, and enjoyed so much, she literally went bankrupt.
She closed down the barn and gave those who were left 30 days to find arrangements for another barn, took the few that belonged to her young kids who she couldn't bear to part with, and moved. She invited most along to the other facility, but we all knew it would never be the same and, as a result, many chose alternatives that better suited their own pocketbooks.
Shad, my point is this: I understand your willingness and desire to keep 'letting late payments slide and feeding the abandoned horses' - aka - putting out content for the love of doing it and not wanting to let our smaller community down. But for the love of all things medieval, please don't put yourself in a hole you can't climb out of. Make the changes needed to sustain yourself and your family responsibilities. Do the hard thing by letting Shadiversity as it is now, end before it dies and you can't afford bring it around again as Shadiversity 2.0.
Keep your finances in check and don't let yourself lose your dream AND your own stability. The worst thing you could do is try to keep this version afloat until you literally can't and then not be able to make even a moderated version down the line. That, my friend, is a lose-lose situation. Please learn from the mistakes that cost the barn owner years of her happiness and replaced it with stress.
    Best of luck.
    - Jackson

      @SpottopsNL Місяць тому

@maniga6763 This is an issue with a lot of old channels (no matter the content or political slant). The algorithm favors engagement. Well, among other things, of course, I'm not going to claim it is all perfectly clear. But engagement is a big factor, which is why so many creators say "like and subscribe and be sure to let me know what you think in the comments."
This means that if you have a large number of subs, but you get very few new subs (relatively), it's logical that a lot of your current subs are from "dead" accounts or subs from people who lost interest in your content for whatever reason. The algorithm serves the new videos to a test audience and sees a (relatively) low click rate, so it will be less likely to recommend it to others. Why would it recommend his video when it could serve a video that is more likely to get clicks instead? This video works because of the spicy title, which made it more likely that the initial test audience clicks on it. It's less of a conspiracy and more the way youtube recommendations work, I think.
Also yeah, youtube's search engine has been bad for a while now. You get a few relevant videos and then it devolves into popular but far less relevant results.

When viewer interest declines it usually happens gradually, not an instant drop all of a sudden in a given month, especially when the content being made is just as good as always.

It brings in a bunch of the Tiktok addicts who don't really watch full videos, and since they don't view the ad-monetized content it flags your channel to the algorithm as being "Bot-bought" and it kills your recommendations. This has happened with a lot of channels who've been encouraged to bump up YT's shorts, only to have their channels get algorithmically ruined.

I work with a D&D UA-cam channel and we've seen the exact same pattern. This has been an absolutely terrible year thus far. Also, the problem with Shorts is the majority of people who watch Shorts are the younger generation who, quite frankly, don't have the attention span to watch long-form content. So the TikTok crowd is watching Shorts, but they never watch anything more. And UA-cam doesn't pay much for Shorts, pennies if you're lucky. We had a Short that hit 500K views and it paid something like $20.

A problem I’m currently having is there are a number of channels I love that are currently putting out fun and awesome content but it’s content I want to sit and actively watch and I’m just too busy to do so. As a result the channels that I can play in the background and just listen to get most of my attention. Shadiversity still pops us in my feed with every new video but I want to properly enjoy the content when I watch it. I love the direction the channel has taken but the problem is on my end. I do have a suggestion though. Since Shad has taken a less active role in the more visual videos due to his health, maybe he can do more older style videos with him in his chair just talking. That way I can engage with the channel more despite my busy schedule.

Hey Shad. One thing to note is that UA-cam has been shifting the Algorithm. As a long term user, something which I don't see you doing is using the Premier system to announce your 'flag-pole' videos. Or announcing smaller projects in the community tab. The channels I've been observing which have been finding success getting picked up have used 'both' of these systems to great effect.
Here's an experiment I'd suggest. Run a premier for the largest video that you have in production for next month. Set the premier up to take place about a week prior, and for your smaller videos release a community post 'directly linking' to said video'. I know it might come across poorly, but it seems to be what others are doing that are favoring other people. They are tools in your tool box, and I hope it helps.
Edit: Small correction. I checked the community tab again, and found that you were actually posting videos. I also went through your video tab, and noted a difference of about 20-40k viewers per video. Might help! Might not! Apologies for the mistake and god-speed.

    • @mni892
      @mni892 Місяць тому +22

Also another thing that I noticed. While this might come across as crass or rude. You aren't producing content which is in the midst of a hype cycle at the moment which you had been doing for the period I recall you showing up routinely in the algorithm. For instance, when was the last time there was a 'video game weapon review' or a 'movie weapon review' for something when it was actually relevant in the zeitgeist.
Just going through the past four months of pop-culture videos.
Avatar was a major success for Netflix, but it wasn't a cultural phenomena that can really carry the channel and there was no distinct follow up.
Lord of the Rings didn't have 'anything' happening when you released all of those videos on it back in December.
Pirates of the Caribbean is 'dead' as a franchise.
Star Wars and Marvel are both in a slump
Ya haven't done an anime video in the three month period I observed in the channel update.
And while Baldur's gate 3 is a great video game, it just... It's a year old.
To be completely honest with ya man, while I adore your content. The past three months, where this slump is 'noticeable' has not been your best work. It hasn't been your most relevant work, and it has not 'felt' nearly as inspired as it normally is. I truly adore your work. But I think it needs to be said. I can't earnestly say that I believe it is the algorithm, when reviewing the content itself, it just doesn't seem like it's content your average joe wants to see.
      A few suggestions,
      - War of the Rorhirim is going to be coming out in December. Slate a big lineup of lord of the rings content for that time frame in December.
      - Dune is 'huge' right now due to the release of the second film. Put out a video on the knife fighting of Dune.
      - Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be out in May, look into the history of weaponry for the series. There's a ton there to cover.
      - Warhammer is in the middle of its Edition release Cycle. Age of Sigmar, Games' Workshop's primary fantasy product line is about to release their fourth edition, while Warhammer 40k just released 10th edition. They've been funneling big bucks into UA-cam to promote the tabletop.
-On top of that, Magic The gathering is trying to reinvigorate its IRL area with a marketing bonanza. You have so many fantasy designs and so much artwork to work of there.
Effectively, what might be happening is the same thing that seems to happen with a good chunk of channels, where you provide a good amount of coverage on relevant material your sub-channels while not producing stuff for the main channel, but still produce big projects for less relevant material. I've seen many people make this mistake. From what I can tell, it's truly not the algorithm.
Edit: Someone pointed out the Dune Video, missed that one, however it still had four times the viewership of other videos from the same time frame. So it doesn't detract from the overall point.

Not with the amount of comments experessing their discontent.

@@shadiversity Thank you for reading my feedback and replying, Shad.
You absolutely have made several bangers! The sudden death spiral which started in January could very well be explained by the hand of Google, but the channel seems to have been on the decline even before then as shown in the charts which makes this 5 year all time low particularly devastating I have no doubt.
Maybe the answer is somewhere in between?
What brought me to my conclusion is the fact I've never quite seen so many comments expressing their discontent with the new form of content on these sorts of Update Videos in the past. The number of comments absolutely dumbfounded me and I can't tell if it's because these comments were somehow pushed out of the view by UA-cam's doing in the comment section of previous updates or if this sentiment is genuinely growing.
Perhaps a community poll, even if not a 100% bulletproof way to gauge the market value, could be of some help?
Edit: Google has most likely had a hand in this for quite some time, even beyond January and maybe even as far back as several years. There's no way that can be dimissed.

    • @KoshoShinogi
      @KoshoShinogi Місяць тому +12

I too have been reading through the comments, and I applaud you on your keen observation and eloquently presented statement. There are indeed a lot of viewers who are taking this opportunity to explain what has put them off about the channel. The response you got has been copy pasted each time. That or a link to 6:36 where he briefly addresses it in the video.
I happen to be in agreement with many of them. The type of content I subscribed to the channel for is not being made anymore. Things like fight scene autopsies where he breaks down the fight between Achilles and Hector in Troy, or goofy mall ninja weapon compilations. It's all as you say bashing things with weapons and as someone who doesn't have a super keen interest in weapons I can only watch so much.
Some of the content, like movie reviews, has moved over to Knight's Watch, but even that has undergone changes. There was a time where reviews were carried out scene by scene with typed or handwritten notes. They were structured cathartic rants, as it says in the intro. The very first Shadiversity video I saw, and this may ring true for many, was the Rise of Skywalker review. Just him sitting in his high back wooden chair laying into the movie for hours, and it was exactly what I needed to see at the time. Now they're all done off the cuff until no one feels like talking anymore it seems.
Now there are 3 caveats to my sentiments. One, I don't pretend to know a thing about how to run a successful UA-cam business. Two, Shad has health issues that influence the volume and type of content he's able to make, which he's made public on more than one occasion. And three, I know Shad is very intelligent and has tried everything to reverse course with his business. He's tried live streaming. He's tried shorts. He's tried breathing new life into his novel by adapting it into a graphic novel. He's even tried becoming a regular host on Friday Night Tights in hopes that the exposure would bring more eyeballs to his channels.
I'm not sure what the solution is, but I do know that you have to control what you can control. I've supported in every way I can, despite the content becoming less diverse and interesting to me at times, because I like Shad and the people he has around him and I want to see them thrive. I'm a member on both of the main channels. I bought his novel and graphic novel both, leather bound. I open and leave a thumbs up on every single video. But I do feel he should take in some of this feedback, especially from his OG viewers, and see if there isn't some way to provide a wider variety of content that is still on brand for Shadiversity. It's all well and good saying that the quality of content is better than it's ever been, but it's primarily just from a production standpoint. No different from Lucasfilm claiming that the Star Wars content presented in Rise of Skywalker is the best it's ever been because of the cutting edge CGI. In terms of engagement however, well the comments speak for themselves. But I do earnestly hope he can turn things around.

If anything, it's the other way around. The changes to the channel do not correlate with the sudden drop, while the algorithm does. It seems far more likely you're overestimating the impact of something that concerns you personally than that this is what is causing the issue.

@@Llortnerof Both things can be true at the same time. There could've been changes in content or too many divisive videos that drove some people away. The algorithm picks up on that and concludes that there is a drop in interest, then proceeds to amplify the problem by not recommending it as much.

I originally found you back in 2014-15 through your Fantasy Rearmed videos. Now that I work as a custodian I tend to watch long form content that I can listen to with a earphone in my ear. My favorite videos from your channel are the ones I can listen to you talk about something and not have to look at the screen. If you made an hour video just talking about swords, castles or Fantasy I would definitely watch those.

Yeah, while a few videos where they hit dummies with weapons can be fun - for you and me the longform content works at work. That's why I do enjoy the Knights Watch content he does. It works better for me.

@@Pangora2 I agree, he should focus on that channel more and talk more about his interests in fantasy and history on his shadiversity channel instead of preforming skits with weapons. But that's just what works with me. I don't really watch yt anymore, I listen to it.

First time I've seen a video from this channel recommended in about 3 months myself.

Mate, i can see how much this is affecting you and it’s bang out of order. I’ve been a subscriber for a couple of years and until yesterday when your “Correcting misconceptions about castles” video popped up in my feed i hadn’t realised that i wasn’t getting any recommendations for you in my feed for a few weeks, maybe a couple of months.
