- King Charles has confirmed Rishi Sunak’s plan to water down some of the Government’s net zero policies.
The monarch used his first King’s Speech in the House of Lords to state that the drive to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 will not result in “undue burdens” being placed on families.
Addressing the Lords, he said: “Legislation will be introduced to strengthen the United Kingdom’s energy security, and reduce reliance on volatile international energy markets and hostile foreign regimes.

It doesn't feel like he agrees with most of what he is saying. That is the unfortunate position of a Monarch that is more Symbolism than authority.
I was going to say the same thing. There was a palpable disgust as he was reading what was basically a Tory propaganda speech.
Well, he nicely spells out the dream, but where's the reality ?!

The King's Ministers couldn't do this even if someone showed them how too!! This is what's wrong with our Politics. All sounds great, but we lack the calibre of former 'Statesmen' like Politicians. We now have degree holders with limited life skills, the skills that are required for the world stage, who simply 'botch' everything they get involved in, leaving us all to pay the price. The difficulty with our model is that in each main party, there is a group of people, so when they get elected this is all we have to take key positions in Gov't. I do wonder if a future cabinet should comprise of the very best people from all parties? rather than just those from within a Gov't. A change in 'modelling' yes, but some things needs to change, otherwise it's the same old, same old and nothing changes.
The north of Ireland doesn’t even have a sitting government and was it even mentioned once?
If England can manage without a regional government I'm sure NI can for a while.

Great speech. I hope it comes a reality, even partially. Sounds to me like a very awaken and fact-facing roadmap. I hope even a slight percentage of his great agenda comes true.

Net zero is a No No , perhaps in a hundred years when technology has caught up with the needs of the people fair enough, but we should not be forced into something when the infrastructure isnt ready . Its madness and shortsighted.

The first King's Speech in 70 years or so. Still, I can't say I envy him. He is just a ceremonial monarch with no real power.
So why support a literally unchosen rat then?

Perhaps government should decide not to have a pay rise as most normal workers don’t get one yearly and cut the money that the royal family receive lead by example and not lining their pockets, why not just ban smoking and vaping completely for everyone, build more prisons and less houses so criminals are given proper sentences instead of a slap on the wrist.
