Thanks Neil, that was a great tip...it also prevents the birds from drinking out of your filling billy can an activity that runs the risk of one of the birds turding in sap while sitting on the end of the billy.

I do similar to tap birches, minor differences,.
1/ i take a longer and slightly thicker branch (just fits bottleneck with ~2mm clearance) and tie it so it points down towards the ground,
2/ i tie a string to bottleneck and tie this to the branch so branch is about 30-40mm into the bottle
3/ i use 1.5 liter bottles mostly and freeze them for use later in the year.

Ok, so you're collecting the sap into your plastic bottle. What do you do once the bottle is full ? Is there something you do to stop the flow of sap when you have removed the bottle from the branch you have cut ?

That's a very nice way of tapping the tree Neil! But: How do you stop the bleeding of the tree after you're done tapping it this way? Plugging the tree won't help using this method...

@Tai Chi Tube that's not a plumber. That would be a mechanical mechanic. I do all of my own mechanic work so that's irrelevant anyway. You don't bleed a radiator anyway.

Hi, there are two more things you can do with birch sap.
One is to use it for making wine. I remember a women's institute book on home made country wines contained a recipe.
The other thing is to boil it down into birch sap syrup which is what the Russians do or the Canadians for Maple syrup.
