History of Ancient Egypt: Dynasties XXII & XXIII - Shoshenq I, the Canaanite Campaign and Civil War
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 чер 2024
- In this episode we'll take a look at the short revival of Egypt's fortunes under the country's 22nd Dynasty, specifically during the reign of Shoshenq I (c. 945-925 BC). A rather mysterious ruler of Libyan descent, Shoshenq politically unified Egypt once again to create a strong, centralized state that brought back countrywide respect to the office of Pharaoh of Egypt. An extremely capable ruler, he's perhaps most famous outside of the world of archaeology for his military conquests in the land Canaan and, at least according to the Bible, the sack and plunder of Jerusalem.
A few decades after Shoshenq, Egypt once again became politically fragmented with a violent civil war occurring in Thebes. This lack of strong leadership may have made Egypt ripe for invasion from both the south and the east. We'll take a look at this and much more in the latest episode of Ancient Egypt, Dynasty by Dynasty.

My favorite topic on my favorite channel 😍Greetings to all Egyptomaniacs! Thanks Cy!
Ain't no way my favourite female educator commented on my favourite male educators video 😂😂 bruh, NOICE
Cy and Fall of Civilizations are top notch.
Thanks for always tuning in, appreciate it and looking forward to next vid of some amazing site on my travel bucket list!
Little bit of mutual fart smelling never hurts
I'm deleting my internet when this series ends
Haha no don't that because there will be a lot of follow ups to this and other ancient Egyptian content you'll probably be interested in...thanks so much for watching!
This video came out at a very appropriate time, I literally got my diploma for Egyptology yesterday.
Congrats! :D
Awesome, congratulations! That is a great achievement! Thanks so much for watching, really appreciate it!
Congratulations! Which part of Egyptian history is your favorite?
Yes Egypt we’re getting close to the 25th what I think is a very interesting dynasty
That's gonna be a good one... and a bit longer too. Thanks for watching!
Love it when you cover Egypt. Keep up the great work Cy!
Thanks! I'm super excited about the CL finale... it's one of my favorite series on UA-cam and honestly I'm a bit sad it's coming to an end. Can't wait though!
You are truly one of THE BEST History UA-cam channels.
Keep up the good work, Cy
My pleasure, thanks so much for continuing to tune in, means a lot!
It's hard to be mad about the video game footage when it's actually so darn accurate.
Yeah whoever created the Bronze Age mod I'm using did it with love and a lot attention to detail. It's an older mod but I personally think it's more accurate than the latest TW Pharaoh game that came out last year. Glad you liked this... there'll be more battle scenes (some of them pretty epic) coming up in future vids, especially Egyptians vs Assyrians which will be fun to create. Thanks for watching!
Idk why but every time Cy says Shoshenq, I keep thinking Shoshenq's redemption.
Haha makes sense... he did sort of briefly redeem Egypt in terms of international prestige. Thanks for watching, really appreciate it!
Been waiting, can tell it’s worth it. Can’t wait for the 26th Dynasty and the Ptolemies
They're in the works, thanks so much for watching!
Almost there, Cy!
It's been good ride so far... still some ways to go before the end, thanks for watching!
Finally a new one
Today is a good day!
Thank you for continuing the series!
Thank YOU for continuing to watch! Still have a ways to go, stay tuned!
Christmas came earlier! Thanks, Cy!
You're welcome!
And the hits just keep coming!
Great video as always ❤
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
👍👍👍Thank you Cy, was just about to listen to some music but this is far more interesting!!
Thanks... funny you say that as this one had a variety of music as well, some ancient sounding eastern themes with heavy metal peppered in. As always thanks for watching!
Awesome I've been waiting for this
Hope you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
ooooh, something to help me sleep tonight!!
Enjoy and sweet dreams!
@@HistorywithCy you will get at least 5 full watch times from me, ads included. Run the hell out of them while I sleep, hope it helps!!
This video has really made my day.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it...the rest of the series is in the works!
Thanks for this cy . Another great video . Keep em coming please 💜
Will do, thanks for watching!
Fantastic stuff here. Keep it coming.
Will do, thanks for watching!
I want to thank you for how insanely hyped I feel visiting Egyptian and Mesopotamian museum wings these days
I know the feeling!
Top notch production as usual, Cy! Thanks!
Thanks, appreciate it and thanks for watching!
I can't wait for the supercut of all the dynasty videos put together when this is over.
Yeah that's going to be a lot of fun to make. Along with some edits (I'll be taking out the intros and ending like "in the next episode..." etc.), I hope to have new footage from Egypt by then to add in along with any new updates/findings since the original episodes came out. It'll take a while to put together but hopefully worth it for all of you Egypt enthusiasts. Thanks for watching this series, really appreciate it!
YES 🙌. Thank you very much!
My pleasure, thank YOU for watching!
Watching you run through the kings list makes me emotional for some reason. Someone's entire lifespan, reduced to a single name with birth and death. And most of their lives we'll never get to know at all. It's crazy.
Reminds me of Shelley's sonnet Ozymandias:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
Thanks for watching, appreciate it!
Thank you Cy!!
No problem, thank YOU for watching!
YES!! MORE Egyptian Dynasties. We got 10 Dynasties left.
More on the way! Working on 24 and 25 at the moment, stay tuned and thanks for watching!
Shoshenq was mentioned in the first indiana jones movie. We're finally to the old testament. After the new kingdom is already gone. The pyramids, all those temples, the ramses statues. It was all there while they were writing that stuff. This channel has cleared up so much blurry history in my mind. I have to watch the greek and persian playlists then I'll be ready to read books. This channel the best thing that ever happened to the internet.
Wow, thanks so much for the feedback and kind words, really appreciate them. There is an older Greek and Persian playlist, but I'm creating another one with the more recent content. Hope you enjoy them and thanks again for watching!
@@HistorywithCy After I'm done watching all your videos I'm going to read all the books you list as sources. Or at least Herodotus.
your videos are great great !!! many thanks
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Many thanks for this addition to the series. Looking forward to the next installment.
You're welcome and thanks for watching. The next one will be D24 and 25 and will probably be one of the more interesting and intense episodes of the series, I think you'll enjoy it!
@@HistorywithCy 🙂
thanks ! please do 26-27 too
For sure, will get to them all!
Thanks Cy! Always a good day when you drop a video.
Oh man you shouldn't have, appreciate the support but honestly, you continuing to tune into every video already means so much... really can't thank you enough for you support of the channel all these years. Thank YOU!
@@HistorywithCy My man, thanks to you the past few months I've been on walking tours of India, Greece and Persia, and had buckets full of info poured into my brain. A few bucks is meager compensation in return.
Welp. Time for my whole rewatch
Thanks, glad you enjoy these to see them multiple times, motivates me to put out more! Thanks so much for watching!
another banger
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
Nobody tell me who wins… laisse faire I wanna be surprised so please let Cy make more. There’s a few more yet… Yaknow why no painting of Egyptian interior? We’re gonna need to find out what they did for roofs. Great video Cy.
My lips are sealed... until the next episode. Thanks for watching these!
@@HistorywithCy most kingdoms are lucky 31 kings let alone 31 dynasties. Don’t ruin it indeed. I love em. Please keep it going
Did I already say “I love it”. Ehh. I love it that much I don’t mind repeating…
Thanks man, always great to hear from you!
I’m on my fifth watch. Great art often needs to set in and given different perspectives. Cy slays and that is the one constant…
Thanks man!
If i'm doing the math right, was Osorkon's record of temple gifts inscription for *fifteen tons* of gold?
I'm terrible at math but here's the way I'd calculate it. 15,345 deben x 91 grams/deben=1,395,395 grams or roughly 1,395.4 kg. To convert it to pounds I'd do 1,395.4 kg x 2.20462 lbs/kg=3,076 lbs. So just over 1.5 tons. Still a lot! Thanks for watching!
Shoshenq the goat
❤❤❤
i cannot wait for egypt in 401-337, please do not forget Khabash!!
Will do, thanks for watching!
just reminded me of the last days of the Umayyads and the raise of the Abbasids
Abbasids were based, Umayyads were corrupt Arab ethnocentrists
Am I wrong in reckoning 15345 deben of gold (at 91g each) to be approx. 1.4 metric tons?!?
Hi! No, I think it's less than that. I'm not that great at math but here's how I'd calculate it:
15,345 deben x 91 grams/deben=1,395,395 grams or roughly 1,395.4 kg. To convert it to pounds I'd do 1,395.4 kg x 2.20462 lbs/kg=3,076 lbs. This comes to just over 1.5 tons. Still a lot of gold! Thanks so much for watching, really appreciate it!
"at least on papyrus" lmaoo
Haha yeah I thought I'd add that little pun in there...glad you caught it! Thanks for watching!
Yeeees
Well if the statue nodded its approval then I guess it makes sense.
Can you use the old Magic Keyboard with the new iPad Air?
Shawshank why does it sound like a nickname that convicts will give to a bloke who has a bad habit of shanking people in prison..😅😅
The Shoshenq Redemption.
Haha that should be the name of a biopic about his life. Thanks for watching!
Piye is coming!!
Yup, working on the vid for D24 and 25...it'll be a good one! Thanks for watching!
23 down! 10 to go...(depending on whether you count the last 2 Greek ones...
but hey, the Libyan ones do, so, why not?)
Yeah maybe slightly less since I'll be combining 24 and 25 and maybe the Achaemenids into one...haven't decided yet but yes, we'll getting to the endgame. Thanks for watching the series!
@@HistorywithCy it's my pleasure! thank you for taking on this (if I can put it this way)
monumental task.
My pleasure, I really enjoy making these for y'all.
Everyone loves the Shoshenq Redemption… Cy is just better by a bit than Morgan Freeman
Maybe Cy is more like Andy… im stretching
I would love to see such a movie made! Shoshenq redeems Egypt for a while... only to die shortly after (duh, gave away the plot!).
@@HistorywithCy the pharaoh crawled through five hundred yards of filth to stand in the rain and have him brought up. Aw man. Imagine the Egyptian lady poster he had dug behind hahaha. Shoshenq went thru it and even got a library for us all. Beer on the roof. Shoshenq Dufresne…
127th
Who was Pharoah?
Who was NOT Pharaoh?
🤭
Somebody knows their Sumerian King List! Haha how cool would it be if they found a papyrus with an Egyptian scribe writing something similar about one of the Intermediate periods?! As always thanks so much for watching, always appreciate it!
@@HistorywithCy I waste little time when I see a new History with Cy video has dropped! 😊
Babe, wake up, History with- what? You saw it already? I knew I loved you for a good reason
😂😂😂
Same is happening now in America. And we will suffer the same fate.
Too bad we haven't learned a thing from these events, and the 2nd intermediate period either. We'll repeat that same history again, but at least we'll be politically correct.
useless Dynasties
Bring on the 25th!
It's coming up!
