    Great video, ended up glueing the foam part to my wood floor and using Velcro to attach it to the plexiglass. If you have extra plexiglass you can put a piece a couple inches behind your ball to make sure you aren’t chunking. Kind of like the eyeline golf speed trap.

    After a successful proof of concept, I put together my actual hitting strip today. Honestly found the 1" foam you linked a little stiff. Not bad, but I felt like there could be some more "give" to it. Fortunately was building mine into a 3/4" sheet of melamine. So I had to go with a different foam anyway.
    This one came out awesome! Unlike any mat I've ever hit off of. And I've tried a bunch. Including the high dollar gel mats. I also set it up so that I can easily replace it. Drilled a few holes at each end of the polycarbonate. Then screwed it to the melamine with some truss screws and rubber washers. Will be super easy to replace when the turf wears out. It also simplifies the build and saves having to buy a gym mat (or similar) to go on the ends of the Lexan.
    This DIY mat is definitely the way to go. Awesome to hit off of, and can't beat the price. Spent $45 on a 15' strip of turf, $10 on the foam strips, and $15 on the polycarbonate sheet. Everything else I already had on hand (melamine base, screws/hardware, and construction adhesive). I also made a stance mat with some of the turf. But still have enough left over materials to make 3 replacement strips!

    Been working on sourcing all the parts to make my own. So this is great timing.
    Had figured everything out, aside from what type and thickness plastic to use for the turf base. Was debating between polycarbonate and ABS in the neighborhood of 1/8”.
    Think I’ll end up ordering both to test out any differences.

    • @PixelGolf
      @PixelGolf  2 роки тому

      Polycarbonate at 1/8” would be perfect!

    • @rickjablonski9669
      @rickjablonski9669 2 роки тому

      @@PixelGolf I ended up picking up some Polycarbonate at HD (.095-ish thickness ). Basically because I'm eager and didn't want to wait on shipping.
      Kind of glad I did. I think 1/8", while not much thicker, would be a little too stiff. I also think the foam is what has the biggest impact.
      Already put one together for testing. Have a second sheet of PC that'll be used for my final product. Going to actually screw it into a OSB base. As opposed to using adhesive or velcro. Figure this will make it easy to swap out the sheet.

    Has anyone used the turf that Golf RnD linked in the bio and can speak to the durability? I wish I had a supplier locally so that I could get the same turf he uses.
    Golf RnD, great tutorial! Really appreciate it.

    This is flat out FANTASTIC! I'm a little unclear on the material you used for the tee holder. I don't see it linked in the material list. Can you clarify?

      I didn’t want to link it yet, until I get more time using the tee to make sure it doesn’t fail or crack the lexan. Will have an update video and then link it.

    Awesome idea. How does it affect spin numbers? I consistently get low spin numbers on my mat compared to on course. Which result in too much carry and roll with my irons. Using a GCQ so I know spin is accurate.

      That is a hard thing to tell, but I’ll see what I can do! It does produce similar launch angles as real grass, which is a huge plus compared to others I’ve bought and tried.

    how do you feel about the turf here? it looks similar to the putting turf i have from home depot i used as my flooring i put over some workout foam. i just wonder if its a little thin and if some turf with another half inch or so of foam would be helpful at all? i plan to build a new mat to put on top of my existing turf (currently have a 5x5 rawhide but my elbow is killing me)

      I switched the turf to Money Putt. The putting turf is perfect for this. New video coming soon!

    is it possible to use Gym Mat to build a hitting mat ? Just working if it is too hard surface for golf mat

      I would not recommend it as it is a very dense material… You can make one, but I would add a diy hitting insert.

    Great guide, and I love the idea for using the wood tees - much better than the rubber tees.
    Have you looked for higher durability turf so you don't have to replace it every quarter?

      I am constantly researching new turfs, but it is also important for the color to match, but if one is better, I might switch the whole turf piece on the entire mat.

      @@PixelGolf getting ready to build one, was wondering what kind of foam you were using for the tee?
